In the East, the Toronto Raptors and Washington Wizards also seem destined for sell-offs barring an unexpected resurgence. The Charlotte Hornets have key veterans who could attract playoff suitors. And the Detroit Pistons, still committed to their youth, could flip role players for future assets.

The Boston Celtics may be a juggernaut in the early part of the NBA’s 2023-24 season, but that does not mean that the ball club is a lock to win the 2024 title, especially given that the Celtics, as good as they have been, still have exploitable weaknesses.

Whether their lack of reliable depth in the frontcourt and on the wing, or their mediocre ball movement and less-than-ideal shooting percentages (with a few notable exceptions), the better teams in the league can still find weaknesses to pick at in the postseason. So what can the Celtics do about it in the meantime?

And with Dec. 15 soon to arrive and the flood of players who signed new deals over the summer able to be traded, the murmur of analysts suggesting the Celtics ought to make a change to help address some of these issues is growing louder.

‘I expect the Celtics to be active in the trade market’: Shams Charania after Boston’s IST loss

“I just think from a staff perspective, getting timely baskets, the Celtics clearly were a little bit lacking last night,” said Charania.

If you watched the Indiana Pacers’ bench players giving the Boston Celtics nearly as much trouble as did their starters in Monday night’s in-season tournament quarterfinals loss and wished that the Celtics could have a few players that the team can lean on for similar production, you are far from alone in that regard.

In fact, The Athletic’s and Stadium’s Shams Charania weighed in on Boston’s bench postgame, hinting that the Celtics may have plans to boost their reserve capabilities with a few consolidatory moves at the 2024 NBA trade deadline while making an appearance on Fan Duel’s “Run it Back” podcast.

“My concern with the Celtics — there’s a lot that we’ve seen over the last couple of years — they get outscored 17 to 7 down the final minute-thirty of this game last night,” recounted The Athletic reporter.

Will the Boston Celtics stand pat at the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline?

Plugged-in people are speculating this could be the (non) move.

Fans of the Boston Celtics hoping for a major move at the deadline — or, in fact, even a minor one — may be disappointed according to recent intel from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. After a summer of blockbuster moves to land star big man Kristaps Porzingis and veteran point guard Jrue Holiday, rival execs are not expecting much of anything from the Celtics on the trade front.

“With a roster spot open, most executives believe the Boston Celtics will stand pat and wait until the buyout market to add another veteran for a championship run,” writes Scotto.

“It’s worth noting Boston expressed interest in several veterans, including re-signing Blake Griffin and free agent forward TJ Warren last offseason.”

There was speculation that Griffin might join the ball club late in the 2023-24 season ahead of the start of Boston’s current campaign, and the Celtics could be waiting for the Oklahoma native to return to the fold, which would indeed provide an elegant solution to the Celtics’ current dearth of frontcourt depth.

But a minor move could still be on tap after Boston’s depth signings having failed to make much of a mark this far into the season.

Boston is not likely to make further major moves seeing as those they made this summer put them where they are now in the league’s hierarchy.

“They shouldn’t feel much pressure to do anything at the deadline, instead letting this new-look roster with Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis continue to marinate,” writes Swartz.
