USC transfer tracker — Trojans get elite receiver Dorian Singer, continue to grab Pac-12 transfers

The Trojans have secured a top-end receiver for 2023. Ralen Goforth will play for Washington. That and more in this updated #USC transfer tracker for Dec. 19.

Welcome to one of the most important weeks in college football: It’s the start of the transfer portal for the 2022-2023 offseason cycle. Buckle up. It’s going to be a wild ride.

College football now has its own equivalent of pro sports free agency. Players look at their own situations and come to the conclusion that for various reasons — playing time for some, coaching fit for others, winning games for others — it’s best to pack up and go somewhere else.

The transfer portal officially opened on Monday. Over 1,000 players have already entered or at least expressed an intent to enter the portal. We have our national transfer tracker to keep tabs on a lot of notable names.

Here, we present our USC transfer tracker. Right now, it has players headed out, but soon enough, we’ll be able to add new players coming in to play for Lincoln Riley in 2023.

We’ll update and refresh the list below as needed:

Auburn guard confirms he’s entering the transfer portal

Keiondre Jones revealed his intentions to enter the portal last week.

Another Auburn player has entered the transfer portal on a Monday that has featured a mass exodus of players from programs around the nation.

This time, it’s Auburn guard [autotag]Keiondre Jones[/autotag], who has officially entered the portal after announcing his intentions to do so in the last week. Despite this, though, it isn’t quite guaranteed that he will leave — Jones said that he still may end up at Auburn if the coaching staff and their interest in him is to his liking.

Jones has been a mainstay on Auburn’s roster. He came to the program in 2019 as a true freshman and thus didn’t see playing time, but made his debut on the offensive line in 2020 after lineman Brandon Council got injured. Jones would go on to start every game in 2021, but he once again found himself on the bench during the 2022 season as guard Kameron Stutts often took reps in his stead.

Should Jones stick around, he would be coached by new offensive line coach Jake Thronton, who was on new head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag]’s staff at Ole Miss.

Auburn quarterback enters transfer portal

Zach Calzada never played a down for the Auburn Tigers.

It’s been a hectic day for college football’s transfer portal across all positions, and the Auburn Tigers didn’t make it out unscathed.

On3 reported Monday that quarterback [autotag]Zach Calzada[/autotag], who transferred to Auburn from Texas A&M before the season began, has entered the transfer portal for a second time. Calzada started 10 games at Texas A&M in 2021, his most notable game being a victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Calzada’s saga at Auburn was somewhat bizarre, as he never played a down for the Tigers after transferring in. A lingering shoulder injury kept him from playing in the team’s spring game and he eventually had a procedure on it in September that ended his season. Despite this, there were still games where Calzada was dressed during the season, though he never seemed to be in line for any playing time across the year.

Calzada is the second Auburn quarterback to go for the portal, as T.J. Finley distanced himself from the team earlier this year. While the motives behind Calzada’s transfer are unclear, it may be worthwhile to see what new head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] plans to do with the transfer portal as he continues to build his staff at Auburn in preparation for his first season with the team in 2023.

Transfer portal notebook: stories to follow as the portal opens for business

The Texas A&M exodus under Jimbo Fisher. Oregon exits noted by @Ducks_Wire. Kedon Slovis in the portal. Here are some of the bigger early stories to follow.

There is a lot to keep track of now that the college football regular season (except for the Army-Navy Game) is over. The doors to the transfer portal have swung wide open. Business is booming and rosters are about to be dramatically reshaped. USC benefited from the portal as much as any program in the country in 2022, and Lincoln Riley has made no secret of the fact that he intends to continue to restock his roster with portal reinforcements.

As seasons come to an end, and as coaches switch schools, players are on the move and will continue to enter the portal. With all of these moving parts on display, there’s a ton to keep tabs on. Here are just some of the stories worth noting as the transfer portal officially opens in college football:

National Transfer Tracker: notable names as the football portal gains over 1,000 players

The transfer portal is filling up. Keep track of notable prospects every week. A new name in the portal: Arizona State QB Emory Jones.

Hello! It’s transfer portal season for the 2022-2023 college football offseason.

The new transfer portal window officially opens Monday, and that hasn’t stopped players from announcing their plans to leave their schools ahead of the first day they can enter the portal. We saw a lot of transfer announcements over the weekend, which means it’s time to give you our national transfer tracker. This isn’t a list of players who have decided to transfer to USC, though you can be assured that Lincoln Riley has his eye on a lot of prospects. It’s simply a partial list of players who have already stated their intent to leave their current school and play elsewhere.

Last year, more than 3,000 FBS players entered the portal, which was open year-round. Quarterbacks Caleb Williams (USC), Quinn Ewers (Texas), Bo Nix(Oregon), and Spencer Rattler (South Carolina) were among the prominent transfers who made an immediate impact at their new schools.

Here’s an early look at the transfers on the open market:

Former Auburn RB is headed to FCS program in Texas

Former Auburn running back and defensive back Devan Barrett has announced that he is transferring to the University of Incarnate Word.

Former Auburn running back and defensive back Devan Barrett announced that he is transferring to the University of Incarnate Word (UIW) on Thursday. He spent this past season at Troy where he played defensive back.

Barrett was regarded as a four-star according to 247Sports’ recruiting rankings. He chose Auburn over other schools like Indiana and Tennessee. The native of Tampa, Florida, spent his freshman season at running back on the Plains before he made the transition to defensive back as a sophomore. Over the next two seasons at Auburn, he played sparingly in the secondary.

In 2020, he opted out of the season due to COVID-19. In August of 2021, he elected to transfer to Troy. In the one season that he spent playing for the Trojans, he recorded eight tackles, one sack, and 1.5 tackles for loss in ten games total.

Now, Barrett is transferring to the FCS level to play for the Cardinals. He will continue to play defensive back. Last season, the Cardinals finished with a 10-3 record. It will be interesting to see how he finishes off his career in San Antonio.

Auburn interested in kick return specialist

The former Iowa Hawkeye was named to the All-Big 10 first team in 2021.

The Tigers may be looking to get some more help on special teams.

On3 is reporting that Auburn is taking an interest in Iowa wideout transfer Charlie Jones, who they say is interested in the Plains as well (subscription required). Jones plays wide receiver, but he was primarily used by the Hawkeyes as a kick returner during his time in Iowa City and was named to the All-Big 10 first team for his efforts.

Auburn had a kick return committee of cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett and running back Jarquez Hunter in 2021. Pritchett had 10 returns for an average of 31.3 yards, while Hunter had 10 returns for an average of 19.5 yards. Auburn’s primary punt returner was wideout Demetris Robertson, who returned 12 punts for an average of 7.4 yards.

Jones, meanwhile, returned 37 kicks for the Hawkeyes on an average of 7.7 yards per punt return and 25.4 yards per kick return with a touchdown. He would certainly be an experienced returner for the Tigers, but he also has some experience at wideout as well — he caught 21 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns in 2021, so he could find some use in the receiving room if he were to pick Auburn.

The Tigers could use any weapons they can get, and Jones would be able to offer his talents in multiple facets of the game. Jones has not released a list of final schools in the running at this time.
