South Carolina’s Shane Beamer offers high praise of Alabama QB Tyler Buchner

Shane Beamer refers to Tyler Buchner as a ‘gamer’ when asked about him at the 2023 SEC media days.

The 2023 SEC media days have come and gone and that means fall camp will begin in just a couple of weeks for most college football programs.

When Nick Saban and the Alabama football team begin camp, one question will rise above the rest, who will be the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback? The competition will between Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson, and Tyler Buchner will most likely keep Tide fans and college football analysts guessing right up until kickoff against Middle Tennesee State on Sept. 2.

On Thursday, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer was asked about Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner since Buchner was the guy who helped the Fighting Irish defeat the Beamer’s Gamecocks in the Taxslayer Gator Bowl 45-38.

Of Buchner Coach Beamer had the following to say:

“Really talented, athletic, gamer. I remember seeing him right after the game – I finished my press conference and he was out in the hallway, getting ready to go in for their press conference. I just told him, ‘Heck of a performance, great respect for you.’ He made some really good throws in that game, as well, and just a guy that you could tell his teammates had great respect for him and rallied around him and certainly a guy they had a lot of confidence in at Notre Dame.”

Buchner put up what I would call an interesting performance against the Gamecocks where he scored five total touchdowns and accounted for 334 total yards but also had three turnovers in the contest.

It’s hard to tell if that was just “coach speak” from Coach Beamer but I do think it’s important to note that Beamer is better known for telling it like it is than being cliche.

We’ll know soon enough just how much of a “gamer” Buchner is as we are now just about six weeks away from kickoff.

Dooley’s Dozen: 12 top topics from this summer’s SEC media days

Pat Dooley rounds up a dozen key issues from this year’s SEC Media Days after the dust settled in Nashville this week.

SEC media days are over for another year and after a zillion questions about Texas and Oklahoma we will get mentally ready for the last 14-team conference race with divisions.

People like to say that media days are the beginning of football season and it is for coaches, who have all of their vacations in the rearview.

But it’s still a couple of weeks until practices start, so we saw a lot of optimism among the SEC coaches.

That is hardly unusual.

But I reminded a friend the other day that there are going to be 56 games between SEC teams and that means there will be 56 losses to go with the 56 wins.

Somebody has to lose them.

Dooley’s Dozen today looks at the 12 things that stood out at SEC MD23.

Arkansas’ Landon Jackson names Texas A&M as his favorite matchup of 2023

While speaking at SEC media days, Arkansas DL Landon Jackson mentioned Texas A&M and the Southwest Classic as his favorite matchup of 2023.

One of the best parts of SEC media days is the player representatives, with Texas A&M sending Ainias Smith, McKinnley Jackson, and Fadil Diggs to this year’s festivities. Among the student-athletes in appearance was defensive lineman Landon Jackson, who transferred to Arkansas in 2022 from LSU.

When asked what game on the 2023 schedule he’s looking forward to, Jackson named Arkansas’ September 30 matchup versus Texas A&M at AT&T Stadium in Arlington in what has been aptly dubbed the “Southwest Classic.” The sheer atmosphere of the matchup, in which the stadium’s 80,000 capacity features a bevy of fans from both schools, played a role in Jackson’s answer:

“I’d say that A&M game at AT&T, I love that…it’s right in the middle so you’re getting all the A&M fans, all the Arkansas (fans)…it’s a home game for both teams, practically. It kind of gives you that…high school setting in that both teams have their fans there. And I like that, it’s just a high school setting with a hundred thousand more fans.”

Jackson’s comments about the Southwest Classic carry weight beyond the atmosphere and the outcome on the field, as for a moment, there was speculation that this year’s matchup could, in fact, be the last to take place at AT&T Stadium. In the weeks leading up to Texas A&M’s schedule release, it was understood that if these two foes didn’t meet in 2024, then the 2023 Southwest Classic would contractually be the last matchup to take place in Arlington.

However, with the Razorbacks on the Aggies’ 2024 schedule as a neutral site opponent, the SEC agreed that it would be A&M’s home game and that it would be played at AT&T Stadium to fulfill that last year of the contract.

Texas A&M’s series with Arkansas began as a non-conference affair in 2009 at AT&T Stadium via an arrangement between both schools and the Dallas Cowboys. Arlington has hosted the classic every year since (with lone exceptions being 2012 and 2013). The payout for both teams equated to that of a bowl game, hence the motivation for the neutral site.

The Razorbacks won the first three games since the series resumed in 2009. Since then, the Aggies have had Arkansas’ number, having taken 10 of the last 11 matchups, including last year’s 23-21 win in Week 3.

As Texas A&M looks to start the 2023 campaign off strong, their matchup versus Arkansas will mark their second opponent in SEC play, following their September 23 matchup at home against Auburn. The Aggies’ first three opponents on the schedule are New Mexico, Miami, and ULM.

Billy Napier a ‘loser’ at 2023 SEC media days on Wednesday

Billy Napier among the losers from Wednesday’s SEC Media Days.

The Southeastern Conference’s media days continued on Wednesday in Nashville, Tennessee, with the Alabama Crimson Tide, Arkansas Razorbacks, Florida Gators and Kentucky Wildcats taking the podium on the third day of the festivities.

The Grand Hyatt Hotel is hosting the 2023 event, which runs from Monday through Thursday. There have been plenty of eyebrow-raising moments already as media members prepare for the start of the 2023 SEC season, which begins Aug. 26 when Hawaii plays at Vanderbilt.

Stefan Krajisnik of the Mississippi Clarion Ledger wrote up his takes on Wednesday night following Day 3 of the event in his winners and losers column. Among the entries was one for Florida’s [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag], who he tapped as a “loser” from the penultimate day.

For as thrilling as (Akansas head coach Sam) Pittman was on stage, Napier was the opposite. From his prolonged opening statement to the coach-speak-filled answers, there was little enthusiasm or humor from Napier.

It’s representative of the energy surrounding the Gators heading into his second year at the helm. Florida went 6-7 last season and has its win total at 5.5, according to DraftKings.

The 2023 SEC media days wrap up on Thursday starting at 10:05 a.m. EDT with the Ole Miss Rebels, South Carolina Gamecocks and Tennessee Volunteers putting the finishing touches on the week. The event is being televised on the SEC Network.

Previewing day 4 of the 2023 SEC media days

Preview of the fourth and final day of the 2023 SEC media days!

Thursday will be the fourth and final day of the 2023 SEC media days from the Grand Hyatt in Nashville, Tennessee.

All but three teams have already completed their rounds with the media this week including the big names of Nick Saban and Alabama, Kirby Smart and Georiga, and  Brian Kelly and LSU. Rounding up this year’s event on Thursday will be Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

As we have done each day this week, we will now preview each team that is set to take to the podium and provide some quick nuggets about the upcoming season and what to expect.

First up..Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss…

Brian Kelly provides another update on John Emery Jr.’s status

Brian Kelly is optimistic that John Emery Jr.’s return is “imminent.”

[autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag]’s career at LSU has not exactly gone according to plan.

Coming out of high school, Emery was one of the most sought-after recruits in the 2019 recruiting class and he was the highest-rated running back signee for LSU since Leonard Fournette in 2014.

The expectations for him could not have been any higher. As a freshman, he had 39 carries for 188 yards and four touchdowns. He finally got his first start as a Tiger during his sophomore season, but he only carried the ball 75 times and rushed for 378 yards and three touchdowns.

Emery sat out the 2021 season and came back last year for what could have been his final season at LSU. He played in 11 games (two starts) and had 76 carries for 375 yards and six touchdowns.

There have been a lot of questions this offseason on whether Emery will return for another year. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] addressed the latest on Emery at SEC media days.

“He is in the process of being cleared,” Kelly said. “I think we’ve got another thing we have to get through, but I feel really good that it’s imminent and he’s going to be with us when camp starts.”

It seems as though Emery will come back for a fifth year. Hopefully, this will be his best year yet.

PHOTOS: Florida football at 2023 SEC media days

Here is a look at some of the top photographs from the Florida Gators’ appearance at the 2023 SEC media days on Wednesday afternoon.

The 2023 Southeastern Conference media days event is three days deep after kicking off on Monday with a trio of teams along with commissioner Greg Sankey taking the podium.

Two days later, Billy Napier and a trio of representatives from the Florida football program had their moment in the spotlight at the Nashville Grand Hyatt. The three Gators to join the second-year skipper were wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, defensive back Jason Marshall Jr. and offensive lineman Kingsley Eguakun.

Below is a look at some of the top photographs from the Florida Gators’ appearance at the 2023 SEC media days on Wednesday afternoon.

Key quotes from Alabama’s Nick Saban at 2023 SEC media days

Alabama football head coach Nick Saban discussed a lot during his time at the 2023 SEC media days. Here are the highlights and what you need to know.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban spoke with the media to kick off Day 3 of SEC media days.

The gist of what Saban had to say revolved around the returning talent, the current quarterback situation and the two new coordinators in Tuscaloosa.

Saban also noted he likes SEC media days because it means that the season is right around the corner. Much like Alabama fans, the team itself is also eager to return to action after a “down” season. Well, that is how Crimson Tide fans, coaches and players view it.

Roll Tide Wire highlights some of the key quotes from Saban’s time on the podium on Wednesday morning.

SEC officials a ‘loser’ at 2023 SEC media days on Tuesday

The SEC officials were among the losers from Tuesday’s SEC Media Days.

The Southeastern Conference’s media days continued on Tuesday in Nashville, Tennessee, with the Vanderbilt Commodores, Georgia Bulldogs, Auburn Tigers and Mississippi State Bulldogs taking the podium on the second day of the festivities.

The Grand Hyatt Hotel is hosting the 2023 event, which runs from Monday to Thursday. There have been plenty of eyebrow-raising moments already as media members prepare for the start of the 2023 SEC season, which begins Aug. 26 when Hawaii plays at Vanderbilt.

David Eckert of the Nashville Tennessean penned a post late Tuesday night reviewing the winners and losers from the second day of the event, which included criticism of SEC officials and their lack of transparency.

We’re always wary of piling on the officials. They’ve got an impossible job for an audience that’s impossible to please.

That said, it was a weak move on the part of conference decision-makers to send SEC coordinator of football officials John McDaid to the dais as the only speaker not to take questions all day.

Everybody else here has to be accountable, remember.

The 2023 SEC media days continues on Wednesday starting at 10:05 a.m. EDT with the Alabama Crimson Tide, Arkansas Razorbacks and Kentucky Wildcats joining the Florida Gators at the podium. The event is being televised on the SEC Network and more can be found on the day’s events here.
