How to watch, stream, listen to Cowboys-Jaguars in preseason opener

The Cowboys’ preseason opener isn’t on national TV, so you’ll need a plan in order to watch the action from Saturday’s weird kickoff time. | From @KDDrummondNFL

It’s finally arrived. Draft mania came and went. It was fun to catch pics and videos of them running around installing the scheme, but that was short lived. When they arrived out west it was cool. Putting the pads on to match the funny helmet covers made things a little more exciting. However, none of it is actual football competition.

Until Saturday. The Cowboys will return to Dallas this weekend to host the Jacksonville Jaguars in both club’s first exhibition game of the 2023 season. Season ticket holders get 10 games in their package deal and this year that includes two exhibitions and eight regular season contests, starting with this one. There’s 60 minutes of football action to be consumed and here’s everything you’ll need to know.

10 Bears on the roster bubble heading into first preseason game

We’ll be watching these roster bubble players when the Bears battle the Titans on Saturday.

The Chicago Bears open the preseason against the Tennessee Titans on Saturday at Soldier Field, where there are plenty of storylines to watch.

While head coach Matt Eberflus indicated we’ll see some starters in limited fashion, players on the roster bubble should see plenty of reps in this first preseason game.

There are several players facing make-or-break preseasons, including some former starters currently on the outside looking in. With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the Bears players who are on the roster bubble heading into the preseason opener.

10 Bears players to watch in the preseason opener vs. Titans

The Bears are set to take on the Titans this Saturday in the preseason opener. Here are 10 players to keep an eye on.

The preseason opener is finally here, marking another important milestone as we inch closer to the start of the regular season. The Chicago Bears are set to welcome the Tennessee Titans to town for the first look at the 2023 squad.

Though the starters on both sides of the ball likely won’t see more than a couple drives, the preseason will give everyone a chance to view veterans and rookies alike who are vying for a spot on the team. After all, it was this time last year that fans first got a glimpse at safety Jaquan Brisker and Jack Sanborn when they shined against the Kansas City Chiefs on the lakefront.

Who will stand out and make a name for themselves this Saturday? Here are 10 players to keep an eye on when the game kicks off.

3 Cowboys to watch closely in preseason opener vs Jaguars

To make the team they’ll need to be valuable on special teams, but these three players want much more out of the 2023 season. | From @cdpiglet

Preseason action hasn’t been the place for the Cowboys to prepare their starters for the regular season since Mike McCarthy arrived, Rather it’s used to evaluate the bottom of the roster to find the 53 guys they want on it. Dallas is unlikely to play stars like Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Trevon Diggs, or Micah Parsons much across the three-game slate, but especially on Saturday against Jacksonville.

Instead, Cowboys coaches are trying to figure out are who are going to be the running backs behind Tony Pollard, the fifth and sixth receivers, the fifth linebacker, and the defensive backs spots from eight on up.

A key to those battles could come down to compromises between special teams coach John Fassel and the coordinators. Here are some key players looking to go from special teams contributors to impact players on offense and defense.

Cowboys to spread carries around among all 4 young RBs vs Jaguars, per McCarthy

From @ToddBrock24f7: Rico Dowdle, Malik Davis, Deuce Vaughn, and Hunter Luepke will all get looks Saturday with Ronald Jones unlikely to go, says Mike McCarthy.

Saturday night’s preseason opener will give Cowboys coaches their first gametime looks at a whole host of players. Everyone who takes the field against Jacksonville will be evaluated, from quarterbacks Cooper Rush and Will Grier as they vie for the QB2 spot to Brandon Aubrey, who tries to convince the front office that they can stop worrying about the kicker position.

But one of the most wide-open battle royales will be at running back. Tony Pollard’s slot as the lead ballcarrier is secure, but this weekend’s exhibition game will start to settle the matter of who will back him up once the regular season commences.

There are five men looking to climb the depth chart at RB. But one of them, Ronald Jones may be sitting out this first showcase opportunity. The veteran sustained a groin injury last weekend and has not practiced since.

Head coach Mike McCarthy said things didn’t look good for the all-important Thursday practice, either.

“I don’t see Ronald going today,” the coach said during the day’s press conference. “If he doesn’t go today, he won’t go Saturday.”

That leaves Rico Dowdle, Malik Davis, rookie Deuce Vaughn, and fullback UDFA Hunter Luepke to split the team’s rushing attack when the Jaguars pay their visit to AT&T Stadium.

McCarthy believes there will be plenty of carries to go around.

“I really don’t think it’s going to be a challenge at all, especially now that RoJo’s not going to be going Saturday, unless something changes big-time here in the next 24 to 36 hours,” McCarthy told reporters. “I think there’ll be plenty for all those guys.”

Which one of them breaks out of the pack remains to be seen. But McCarthy believes that the organization has done a great job of bringing in very versatile candidates who can truly do it all out of the backfield.

“Guys you have to scheme for and [who can] play in certain schemes obviously limits you. If you look at these young backs, all four have very instinctive run ability between the tackles,” the coach explained. “At the end of the day, you’ve got run at people, downhill. You’re only going to get outside so many times. This game, running the football and pass protection, it happens between the C-gaps.”

Whether it’s the elusive 5-foot-6-incher- Vaughn- or a big 238-pound bruiser like Leupke or someone in between, McCarthy is clear on what he wants to see.

“You want them to be dynamic with the ball in their hands.”

Four young rushers will get their chances to do just that for the Cowboys on Saturday night.

Bears QB Justin Fields, starters will play in preseason opener vs. Titans

The Bears kick off the preseason against the Titans, where we’ll get a glimpse of Justin Fields and some starters.

The Chicago Bears kick off the preseason against the Tennessee Titans Saturday at Soldier Field, and it sounds like we’ll see some of the starters.

Head coach Matt Eberflus confirmed that quarterback Justin Fields will play Saturday, along with select starters who will “play here and there.”

Eberflus explained the team is working through how many series each player will play, and they’ll assign specific workloads for each individual player. That could be 7-10 plays for some guys or 12-15 for others.

Ultimately whether the unit operates efficiently should impact just how big the workload is for players. If things are jelling, there’s no need to keep them out there longer than a series.

As for what Eberflus is looking for from the offense, he’s looking for crisp operation, protection calls and adjustments, among other things.

With Fields confirmed to suit up for Saturday’s opener, the expectation is we’ll see his new WR1 DJ Moore out there for the first time. We’ve heard about their connection throughout the offseason and now training camp, and Saturday would provide us a first glimpse of the duo in live action.
