The winners (Rangers!) and losers (Flyers) of the 2023 NHL trade deadline

Which NHL teams were the big winners (and losers!) at the trade deadline?

Pencils down, everyone. The 2023 NHL trade deadline is officially over.

This year’s NHL trade deadline has certainly been one for the history books. After years of middling trade deadlines, NHL teams really stepped it up a notch and went all-out with the deals in the weeks leading up to Friday. While the day itself may have been light on the action, over 60 trades were made since the New York Islanders kicked things off with the Bo Horvat deal in late January.

And now, the dust is beginning to settle on an active deadline period that saw many high-end players change hands as the Stanley Cup Playoffs draw near. With the deadline rush over, now is the time to take look at the big picture and draw some early conclusions based on what teams did — or didn’t — do.

Here are our winners and losers from the 2023 NHL trade deadline.

2023 NHL trade deadline: Tracking and grading all the major deals

Tracking every NHL trade made at the 2023 deadline.

The 2023 NHL trade deadline has officially passed!

The 3 p.m. ET deadline on Friday come and gone, marking one of the busiest trade deadline periods hockey fans have seen in some time. While deadline day itself was a bit of a snooze, there were still a lot of names dealt over the past few weeks.

A handful of the big names — Patrick Kane, Timo Meier, Ryan O’Reilly, and others — were traded in advance of Friday, with NHL general managers clearly wasting no time in making moves and doing business.

With the trade deadline now finished, here are all the trades that have been made! Plus, there are grades for all the major deals with our early impressions and thoughts.

The winners (Rangers!) and losers (Flyers) of the 2023 NHL trade deadline

Flyers fans couldn’t believe a James van Riemsdyk deal fell apart at the deadline

Chuck Fletcher failed to trade James van Riemsdyk and Flyers fans are not happy.

The Philadelphia Flyers were supposed to be sellers at the 2023 NHL trade deadline.

And it seemed, for about 10 minutes, that their biggest asset — James van Riemsdyk — was going to be traded to the Detroit Red Wings before Friday’s 3 p.m. ET deadline. About 20 minutes before the deadline, a handful of NHL insiders reported that the Red Wings were closing in on a deal to acquire the 33-year-old Flyers forward.

Unfortunately for Flyers fans, the deal ultimately fell through moments later, as general manager Chuck Fletcher could not close out the trade as the window passed. To go from trading your most valuable asset to nothing within minutes is a rough go for the Flyers, that’s for sure.

It’s hard to say why the Flyers failed to trade van Riemsdyk to the Red Wings, but it seems as if Detroit was ultimately looking to flip him for draft picks then things suddenly collapsed. In the end, it seems as if the Flyers just couldn’t make the fit work by deadline’s end.

Flyers fans, however, were stunned that Fletcher and Philadelphia’s management failed to close out a deal days after the team said they were set to sell at the deadline. In the end, the Flyers only managed to trade Patrick Brown and Zack MacEwen, two fringe players who didn’t get much in return.

Bruce Boudreau delivered a hilarious, expletive-filled pep talk to TSN’s NHL trade deadline crew

Bruce Boudreau is singlehandedly saving NHL trade deadline day.

If you ever need an inspiring pep talk, Bruce Boudreau is your man.

Friday, March 3 marked the 2023 NHL trade deadline as teams get ready for the upcoming playoff push. Unfortunately for hockey fans, deadline day started out as a dud, as after a week of furious activity, Friday morning had barely any buzz.

Enter Boudreau. After being fired from his position as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks earlier this year, Boudreau took his talents to the TSN trade deadline crew to assist their coverage. And amidst a dull morning, Boudreau took the time to give the TSN trade deadline team a hilarious, expletive-filled pep talk to get the crew back on track for the rest of the day.

Talk about a speech for the ages there from Boudreau!

Patrick Kane trade: Who won the Blackhawks and Rangers deal?

Patrick Kane is headed to Broadway!

Patrick Kane got his wish.

On Tuesday, the Chicago Blackhawks traded Kane to the New York Rangers after days of rumors. The list of possible contender destinations narrowed for Kane throughout February, but the Rangers were able to make the trade work after the 34-year-old forward all but demanded to be moved to New York.

Kane was one of the biggest names on the market ahead of the 2023 NHL trade deadline on Friday. With Kane off the market, it seems as if the floodgates are set to open on the rest of the pack as the days dwindle down ahead of the deadline.

As the dust settles on this deal, let’s break down the details of the Kane trade and give out grades to both the Rangers and Blackhawks!

Nashville’s sky-high trade haul from Tampa Bay for Tanner Jeannot stunned the NHL world

This was A LOT for an unproven player.

With the NHL trade deadline on the way, the Nashville Predators are raking in the draft picks after sending young forward Tanner Jeannot to the Tampa Bay Lightning. (Check out Mary Clarke’s comprehensive tracker on many of the deals coming through.)

With the Lightning trying to fortify its offense in a treacherous Eastern Conference, the team was willing to send the Preds a king’s ransom for adding Jeannot to the rotation.

After a standout rookie season in 2021-22, Jeannot had cooled a bit for Nashville leading up to his trade. He’s played in 56 games so far this season, notching five goals and nine assists. Jeannot has also posted a 5.7 percent shooting rate lately.

In exchange for Jeannot, Tampa Bay sent retiring general manager David Poile and Nashville a 2025 first-round pick, a 2024 second-round pick, a 2023 third-round pick, a 2023 fourth-round pick, a 2023 third-round pick and young defenseman Cal Foote.

Lightning vice president and general manager Julien BriseBois defended the trade for Jeannot by assessing the risk of draft picks compared to the promise of a young player with experience.

While BriseBois has certainly earned the benefit of the doubt after leading his franchise to back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021, the hefty haul for Jeannot still earned some dropped jaws for NHL fans and beyond.

Although, if Tampa Bay pushes ahead in the Eastern Conference and Jeannot plays a big role, nobody will be doubting the price then.

What all 32 NHL teams should do at the 2023 trade deadline

Which NHL teams should be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline?

NHL trade deadline season is officially here!

Ahead of the 3 p.m. ET deadline on March 3, there’s been some big transactions already as the days slowly tick off the calendar. Right now, much of the movement has come from the Eastern Conference amidst a competitive playing field. The New Jersey Devils made a big splash after trading for Timo Meier while the New York Rangers swung big by acquiring Vladimir Tarasenko.

With the number of high quality players left on the board, there are still a lot of moves to be made as trade deadline madness has only just begun.

As the NHL trade deadline draws near, let’s take a look at the playbooks for each team. Which teams should be buyers? Who are the sellers? And which clubs should stand pat at the 2023 NHL trade deadline? Let’s dive in!

Timo Meier trade: Who won the Devils and Sharks deal?

The Devils made a big addition to their Stanley Cup push with the addition of Timo Meier.

We’re less than a week from the 2023 NHL trade deadline and the pieces are moving off the board quickly.

On Sunday, the New Jersey Devils traded with the San Jose Sharks for Timo Meier, one of the most sought-after names ahead of the deadline. After a weekend of activity, Meier is the latest domino to fall as the 3 p.m. ET deadline on Friday, March 3 continues to loom over the season.

The Sharks are one of the biggest sellers coming into the 2023 NHL trade deadline and the Devils have been the biggest rumored destination for Meier for some time now. While the asking price for Meier was quite high, the Devils paid the price to snag one of the top names on the market.

As the dust settles on this major NHL deal, let’s break down the details of the Meier trade and give out grades to both the Devils and Sharks!

5 NHL teams that could trade for Patrick Kane

Where could Patrick Kane land ahead of the NHL trade deadline?

Patrick Kane’s time with the Chicago Blackhawks is coming to an end.

Ahead of the 2023 NHL trade deadline, Kane remains one of the biggest names on the market. Hockey fans have known for some time that Kane was on his way out in Chicago and now it seems his days on the team are numbered.

Kane is currently in the last year of an eight-year, $84 million deal, with a hefty $10.5 million cap hit attached and a no-trade clause he’d have to wave to boot. A pretty big price to pay, to be sure, with Kane having 14 goals and 41 points on a truly awful Blackhawks team this season. Still, there’s no reason not to believe Kane will bounce back on a more talented team, especially after putting up a hat trick in his most recent game.

These are the five NHL teams that could trade for Kane ahead of the 2023 deadline.
