4 quotes from Pete Carroll’s press conference at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine

Here are four quotes from Carroll’s conversation with reporters at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll just spoke with the media in an official capacity for the first time since the end of the season. He shared some interesting comments regarding the team’s quarterback situation, including the possibility of picking a QB in the draft.

Here are four quotes from Carroll’s conversation with reporters at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Packers GM endorsing Jordan Love adds more awkwardness for Aaron Rodgers

A weird situation in Green Bay just got more uncomfortable.

It’s almost March, and we could receive unsurprising news of Aaron Rodgers’ NFL future at any moment. Or, it could happen in a few days. Maybe another week or two. At this point, aside from Rodgers, who knows when the four-time MVP will decide what’s next.

But, like some figures in the football world, it sure seems like the Green Bay Packers are understandably growing impatient with the star quarterback.

As the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine kicked off in Indianapolis on Tuesday, GM Brian Gutekunst gave a usual state-of-the-team address. With Rodgers’ future still supposedly up in the air, Gutekunst was even-keeled in response to a question.

He complimented the QB while maintaining, “there’s been some contact back and forth.”

So, even with a “darkness retreat,” nothing much of note has changed that much in the last few weeks, huh? Shocker.

What was interesting from Gutekunst’s press conference was how he talked up Jordan Love. The former 2020 first-round pick will enter his fourth NFL season with 83 career pass attempts. When asked about his capacity to start (with the Packers or otherwise), Gutekunst offered up a concise and strong endorsement of the young QB:

Hmm. If I didn’t know any better, that response almost reads to me like the Packers are trying to put more pressure on Rodgers as he bides his time.

There is the possibility Gutekunst is trying to play up Love’s talent for a potential trade. But with the free agency period around the corner, I think it’s more likely the Packers want to commit their primary signal-caller for the 2023 campaign very soon. If that’s Rodgers, so be it. And if it’s Love, so be it.

But all the cards remain in Rodgers’ hands for now, so the Packers don’t appear to have too many options. And a strange holding period in Green Bay seems to have somehow gotten even more awkward.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah gives an interesting answer on quarterbacks

During his press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine, Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah gave a pointed answer on the QB position

The Minnesota Vikings have officially made it to the NFL Scouting Combine for this week’s festivities. During the week, you will get general managers and head coaches speaking at the podium talking to the media.

Sometimes with these press conferences, you get some good quotes but other times it’s just a bunch of coach speak without really giving anything juicy.

Whenever Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah speaks, you always get something good whether it be insight on how he will handle personnel decisions or team building as a whole.

During Tuesday’s press conference, he gave a very interesting answer regarding the quarterback decision breaking it down from an analytical perspective.

“Let’s go full numbers, we talk about necessary and sufficient conditions in math; a necessary condition is having a starter level quarterback, a quarterback above a certain threshold. Now that doesn’t mean for-sure you’re going to win, thats not the only thing you need, but that is one of the things you need. Having a good level quarterback is a necessary condition.

Kirk (Cousins) meets that threshold, we know that. Okay well now, how do you build the rest of the team around him to make sure you can win in that way? Different quarterbacks require different things around them, but we know that for sure, (Kirk Cousins) meets that threshold. How long does he meet that threshold? Those are things we need to answer. Is there a chance to add somebody maybe with diferent skillsets? These are all questions we gotta answer so there’s not one right way but I do know one thin, he is good enough, he meets that first threshold. Thats a question a lot of people can’t answer with a yes, so we have to make sure we treat that in the proper importance that it is.”

There are layers to this. Adofo-Mensah said that Cousins meets that threshold of starting quarterback to win in this league, but also made a pointed statement in speaking of his age. How long does he meet that threshold?

With Cousins set to turn 35 and that age historically being the drop off for quarterback play, is that a signal to looking toward the future? NFL Network’s Tom Pellisero reported that there wasn’t interest in another one-year extension.

Could they be willing to move on after 2023 or will a long-term extension at decent money be in the cards? Time will tell, but I would lean towards the Vikings not committing long-term to Cousins.

The NFL Combine is too boring to ever be must-see TV

We don’t have to watch this snoozefest. We can be better.

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning. Here’s Robert Zeglinski.

It’s that time of year, folks. The 2023 NFL Scouting Combine is here.

Some of the top prospects in the annual NFL Draft will spend their time in Indianapolis this week. First, they’ll be grilled about their football acumen (and potentially get asked weird questions by Football Guys with no boundaries).

Later in the week, while wearing shorts and performance t-shirts, they’ll head to the field to run really fast, run around some cones, and convince franchises they’re worthy of an investment. All of this will, as usual, and for some reason, be televised.

And, despite the combine’s apparent importance to the NFL Draft (I’m not entirely convinced), I am here for a valuable public service announcement:

You don’t have to watch any of it. Not a minute of your hard-earned free time (or cruising around the internet at work) has to be spent on this snoozefest masquerading as Football Content.

Contrary to what the NFL wants us to think, you don’t have to spend a solitary second watching future pro football players not play football. I’m aware the league seemingly always wants to expand its utter vise grip on the calendar and shoehorn in some NFL-related event every month.

But eventually, we need to set some boundaries, people.

The NFL might be slowly piecing together an ever-saturated offseason that is Vital and Valuable every step of the way, but you don’t have to buy what it sells. Because that’s simply not true.

I know we all love football here. We appreciate the excitement and thrill of an unpredictable game featuring some of the best athletes in the world. And at least with free agency and the draft, you can sell yourself on your team’s “hope” and the promise of a new year with new players.

In a team-building way, that is football now. I get it. I do.

But the combine isn’t even football!

You’re telling me some top QB prospects might throw at this year’s edition? Wow. Breathtaking. I need a minute to get some popcorn.

They measure prospects’ hand sizes. Hand sizes. Don’t lie: is something this silly you’re really thinking about when watching Patrick Mahomes launch a perfect bomb downfield to his receiver?

No. Yawn.

They gush about burners with the fastest 40-yard dash times. Is this relevant to watching a skill player make an incredible run or catch downfield?

Absolutely not. I need more coffee.

They spotlight the guys who can hit the highest markers on a measuring stick. I don’t know about you, but I’m not thinking of Justin Jefferson’s vertical at the combine when I see him sky for his latest act of wizardry. I’m thinking, “wow, what a ridiculous catch.”

Because I’m a man of principles, I refuse to even look up what Jefferson’s vertical was now that I bring it up. After all, we have to stand for something.

So when this weekend creeps up, and you see teasers for the running backs, linemen, or whoever is doing their drills, resist the urge. Don’t give in to the suits telling you the combine is something you have to sit down on the couch to watch.

They’re wrong. So, so wrong.

We love football. We don’t have to love the forgettable parts that have nothing to do with the on-field action.

The Minnesota Vikings will be well represented at the NFL Scouting Combine this year. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell will both be there along with speaking to the media.

While they are down there, it’s all about information gathering. From the interviews to the on-field drills and tampering, they will be spending a lot of time trying to understand where the markets are at for multiple players.

The Vikings will be looking at both offensive and defensive players at all levels of the draft but this piece is all about offense. Here are 15 offensive players to watch for this week at the scouting combine.
