Per Woj, Brisset will have a player option on the second and final year of his deal with the Celtics.

The Boston Celtics have made their first signing of the NBA’s 2023 free agency period. It may not be a blockbuster, but the move addresses the Celtics’ lack of depth on the wing.

According to reporting from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, “forward Oshae Brissett has agreed to a two-year deal with the Boston Celtics.”

Brissett is a 25-year-old, 6-foot-7 forward who plays at both the 3 and 4. His signing perhaps signals the team is moving on from restricted free agent reserve forward Grant Williams. The former Syracuse standout is a career 34.4% shot from deep and averaged 6.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game with the Indiana Pacers last season.

Per Woj, Brisset will have a player option on the second year of his deal.

Per MassLive’s Brian Robb, the deal is likely for the veteran’s minimum.

Scotto: Josh Richardson also drew interest from Boston Celtics before Heat reunion

The limited spending power of the Celtics doesn’t seem to have been involved in preventing a reunion.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

The Boston Celtics were among teams interested in signing veteran guard Josh Richardson according to reporting from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

Per the Hoopshype reporter, “Richardson also drew interest from the Minnesota Timberwolves and Boston.”

The Celtics’ limited spending power doesn’t seem to have been an obstacle. While the team had only the $5 million mini-MLE available, Richardson signed a two-season, $6 million deal with the Miami Heat. That the Celtics had traded him to his last franchise — the San Antonio Spurs — as part of the package that landed Derrick White in Boston may not have been among the selling points in the Celtics’ favor.

Boston has reportedly been active in pursuing backcourt players since the start of the league’s 2023 free agency period, which could hint at designs on shaking up the team’s backcourt — or strengthening its depth after the loss of Marcus Smart in the Kristaps Porzingis deal.

Jones: Boston Celtics showing strong interest in ex-Kings guard Terence Davis

The rumor hints at bigger moves on the table for the Celtics’ backcourt players in the hours or days to come.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

More clues on what the Boston Celtics might do in free agency are starting to percolate through the NBA media sphere. New reporting from ESPN’s Mark Jones has the Celtics “showing strong interest in free agent Terence Davis” with the “Milwaukee Bucks also considering Davis as an option.”

Davis is another low-cost backcourt option on the growing list of rumored Boston targets. He joins Toronto Raptors reserve point guard Dalano Banton on that list. The rumor suggests bigger moves involving the Celtics’ backcourt are on the table in the hours or days to come.

As for the fit in Boston, the 6-foot-4 Kings shooting guard put up a solid 6.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and an assist per game with Sacramento last season. The 26-year-old shot a respectable 42.3% from the floor, 36.6% from deep and 79.1% from the stripe.

Report: Boston Celtics have met with free agent guard Dalano Banton

Banton’s height stands out as the primary attraction as the rest of such a signing would be an upside play.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

While it might not involve free-agency fireworks, more reporting about the Boston Celtics’ focus during the start of the NBA’s 2023 free-agency period has come to light courtesy of NBA Big Board’s Rafael Barlow.

Per Barlow, the Celtics have met with former Toronto Raptors point guard Dalano Banton, who is an unrestricted free agent. Banton is a 23-year-old, 6-foot-9 floor general who played two seasons in a deep reserve role for the Raptors. The Celtics’ interest in him signals a potential need in the backcourt that may presage moves the Celtics are working to finalize.

Banton’s height stands out as the primary attraction. Otherwise, such a signing would be an upside play given the Canadian point guard averaged 4.6 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game with Toronto last season in 9 minutes of floor time while shooting 42.3% overall, 29.4% from 3 and 70.8% from the line.

Report: Boston Celtics, Kristaps Porzingis expected to finalize two-year, $60M extension

The reported number is a bit of a bargain given Porzingis was eligible for a deal as high as $77 million across those two seasons.

One of the lingering concerns of the three-team trade that sent Washington Wizards big man Kristaps Porzingis to the Boston Celtics for veteran point guard Marcus Smart was the lack of years left on the Latvian center’s contract. Porzingis opted into the final year of his current contract to make the trade possible.

Per new reporting from Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes, it seems that concern will soon be put to bed. Porzingis and Boston “are expected to finalize a two-year, approximately $60 million extension” for the former Wizards frontcourt player.

That value would be something of a bargain given Porzingis was eligible for a deal as high as $77 million across those two seasons. The Celtics will be able to turn their attention to the Jaylen Brown supermax extension and Grant Williams’ restricted free agency in the coming hours and days.

Boston reportedly interested in signing Patrick Beverely

The fit, in Marcus Smart’s absence, is a clear one.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

The Boston Celtics need ball movers and some defense after dealing away the so-called “heart and soul” of the franchise, nine-season veteran Marcus Smart. He was dealt to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of the trade that brought in Washington Wizards center Kristaps Porzingis. According to  reporting from Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer, the Celtics might have their eye on a player who can address both issues.

That would be another floor general known for his gritty defense: Patrick Beverley.

The fit, in Smart’s absence, is clear given the help Beverley can provide on the defensive end while also keeping the rock moving around the perimeter and into the paint.

Last season, the onetime Arkansas player experienced his worst 3-point shooting percentage of his career (30.9%), but his steady assists (3.5 per game) and steals (1 per contest) hint he has more to give to the right club and situation.

Report: Celtics’ Grant Williams ‘will likely have to wait out this initial rush of mid-level signings’ in free agency

Free agency for the 2023 offseason kicks off in earnest at 6 pm ET this Friday evening.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

Don’t expect a quick resolution to Grant Williams‘ restricted free agency with the Boston Celtics according to reporting from Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer. Per the Yahoo Sports reporter, “Williams will likely have to wait out this initial rush of mid-level signings to find an interested bidder.”

With wings and swingmen Max Strus, Kyle Kuzma, Donte DiVincenzo and Bruce Brown hot items in the 2023 NBA free agency rumor mill, it seems likely the Charlotte native will have to see how the teams with cap space or the full midlevel exception decide to use (or not use) their spending power on higher-profile free agents.

The Celtics’ intentions toward Williams may hinge on other potential moves for the club.

The two camps are actively working to see if a return is feasible, and those reports may also be factors that are slowing any resolution of Williams’ situation with the Celtics.

Free agency kicks off in earnest at 6 p.m. ET on Friday evening. That may be the inflection point for many of those free agents noted above.

The Boston Celtics are looking to add to their roster in free agency

Are cap-clearing trades coming? Who should Boston pursue in free agency given their cap crunch?

The Boston Celtics are already feeling the pinch of the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement as they try to fill their roster with the sort of depth players they will need to compete for a title in the 2024 playoffs.

With little in the way of room to add talent without going over the dreaded “second apron” and being subject to all of the consequences, Boston needs to be careful with the moves it makes this offseason.

It also has to decide what to do with restricted free agent Grant Williams. Signing the former Tennessee player to a market deal would put the Celtics over the second limit as the team is constructed.

Are cap-clearing trades coming? Who should Boston pursue in free agency given its cap crunch?

The host of the “Locked On Sports Today” podcast recently weighed in on all this and more; take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what he had to say.

Three free agency targets the Boston Celtics could consider

The Celtics, facing significant financial limitations, must make careful decisions in signing new players.

The Boston Celtics are exploring potential free agent targets to bolster their roster this offseason, and NBA analysts are working overtime to try to get clues about who might be on the move — and who might want to be. Such is the case for co-host of the CLNS Media “A-List” podcast Gary Washburn, who came up with three potential options for the Celtics to consider: Derrick Rose, Cam Reddish, and Taurean Prince.

Rose still possesses the ability to make an impact on the court but remains injury prone with a controversial past. Reddish is a player with considerable potential, but he has yet to fully realize it. Prince is a versatile player who has the ability to knock down 3-point shots.

The Celtics, facing significant financial limitations, must make careful decisions in signing new players.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear what Washburn has to say about each of the three.

Boston reportedly tenders qualifying offer to Grant Williams, making him a restricted free agent

The Tennessee alum has reportedly been working with Boston to try and find a role and number that makes sense for all sides moving forward.

The Boston Celtics have officially made reserve forward Grant Williams a restricted free agent by electing to tender an $8.5 million qualifying offer to the Charlotte native on Thursday afternoon according to new reporting from Spotrac’s Keith Smith.

Williams has been connected to a number of ball clubs despite being restricted given the Celtics’ current collective bargaining agreement (CBA)-induced cap crunch. This is due to the perception that the team might not be willing to bring Williams back if tendered a large enough offer. For his part, the Tennessee alum has reportedly been working with Boston to try and find a role and number that makes sense for all sides moving forward.

It remains to be seen whether such a bridge can be crossed for both parties as the intended pain of the league’s new CBA is exerted on the Celtics’ organization, but this is among the chief issues for Boston to sort out in the 2023 free agency period kicking off on Friday.
