2023 NFL mock draft: Top QBs dominate early 1st-round projections

Unlike this year’s draft, the 2023 quarterback class appears to be loaded with top talent

This year’s quarterback class only produced one first-round pick, and he barely cracked the top 20 picks. If the early projections for next year’s draft are any indication, that won’t be the case.

The latest 2023 NFL mock draft from SI.com has quarterbacks coming off the board at each of the top three selections.

Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud lands with the Atlanta Falcons at No. 1 overall in this mock, despite the fact that they just spent a third-round pick in this year’s draft on Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder. Alabama’s Bryce Young is projected to the Houston Texans at No. 2 overall, followed by Kentucky’s Will Levis at No. 3 overall to the Detroit Lions.

Two more quarterbacks crack this first-round projection, as Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke heads to the Seattle Seahawks at No. 22 overall, while Florida’s Anthony Richardson goes to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at No. 31 overall.

The only non-quarterbacks projected in the top five of this mock are Alabama edge defender Will Anderson (No. 4 overall, Seattle Seahawks) and Notre Dame edge defender Isaiah Foskey (No. 5 overall, New York Jets).

2023 NFL mock draft: A surprise QB at No. 1?

In this early first-round projection for the 2023 NFL draft, a surprise quarterback prospect takes the top spot

Early first-round projections for the 2023 NFL draft are already flooding in, and there appears to already be a consensus when it comes to the top two quarterback prospects in next year’s class.

But while Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud and Alabama’s Bryce Young are the names most often seen competing for the No. 1 overall pick in those early forecasts, the latest 2023 NFL mock draft from CBS Sports goes in a different direction at the top.

In this projection, it’s Kentucky’s Will Levis that lands in the No. 1 spot, going to the Houston Texans.

Here’s what CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso had to say about the pick:

Levis feels like a quarterback who can eventually be the No. 1 overall pick. He’s big, chiseled, has a rocket for an arm and can scramble. The Texans will probably be in the quarterback market in a big way next offseason.

Stroud comes off the board at No. 3 overall to the Detroit Lions, while Young goes at No. 5 overall to the New York Giants. A fourth quarterback also cracks the top 10 in this projection, with Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke heading to the Carolina Panthers at No. 7 overall.

North Carolina State’s Devin Leary ends up with the Miami Dolphins at No. 17 overall, while Louisville’s Malik Cunningham (No. 26 overall, Seattle Seahawks) and Florida’s Anthony Richardson (No. 29 overall, Green Bay Packers) make it a whopping seven quarterbacks off the board in the top 32 picks.

2023 NFL mock draft: How many QB will go in the 1st round?

See how many quarterbacks crack the top 10 in this early first-round projection for the 2023 NFL draft

It’s never too early for projecting the first round of next year’s draft, and initial forecasts for 2023 are already rolling in from every direction.

The latest 2023 NFL mock draft comes from CBS Sports, and they expect next year’s quarterback class to be much stronger than the one that saw just one passer selected in the first round this year.

It starts at the top, where this projection has the Houston Texans spending the No. 1 overall pick on Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Here’s what CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards had to say about the pick:

Prior to the 2021 season, there was some buzz out of Columbus that the Buckeyes had their next Justin Fields. Stroud was criticized for his struggles early in the season but settled in to throw for 4,435 yards, 44 touchdowns and just six interceptions. Davis Mills would really have to blow away the organization this season for them to pass on a quarterback at No. 1 overall.

Kentucky’s Will Levis is the next passer off the board at No. 3 overall (Detroit Lions), surprisingly ahead of Alabama’s Bryce Young, who lands at No. 7 overall (Carolina Panthers). Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke makes it four quarterbacks in the top 10, coming in at No. 9 overall (Seattle Seahawks).

That’s it for the quarterbacks in this mock, though, as the likes of Washington State’s Cam Ward, Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman and others don’t make the cut.

Draft Wire editor Luke Easterling looks ahead to the 2023 NFL draft with his initial first-round projections

Hopefully, we’ve all gotten at least a little sleep at this point, now that the current NFL draft cycle has officially come to a close.

Now that every team’s draft class for this year is complete, and the undrafted free agent frenzy has run its course, it’s time to take an early look into the future.

Obviously, much will change over the next 11 months, but these early mock drafts are a fun way to start getting to know those names ahead of the 2022 season.

So, here’s our never-too-early look at how first round of next year’s draft could turn out:

Way-too-early 2023 mock drafts address needs Cowboys ignored in 2022

A collection of 2023 mock drafts have the Cowboys looking for safety help along with other needs not addressed this past weekend. | From @KDDrummondNFL

As was said many times leading up to the draft, it was going to be nearly impossible for the Cowboys to address every need in the 2022 exercise. Free agency left too many holes to be filled by the club’s three top-100 selections. While the team did extremely well in Day 3 selections, the truth is it’s very hard to find multiple long-term contributors from those picks.

So when it comes to spinning things forward, those along with UDFA finds aren’t going to be enough to move the needle. Observers should assume Dallas will still need to address some of those positions while hoping for a diamond in the rough to emerge. After months of speculation, feeling a sense of draft prep withdrawal? Have no fear. These outlets have published 2023 first-round mocks to give readers a chance to get an early jump on who the best of the next set of prospects appear to be.

Of course, the 2023 season will change the outlook on these guys, but it’s still fun to create a watchlist and see how the Cowboys new roster is being evaluated.
