Notre Dame linebacker announces retirement

A Notre Dame linebacker is hanging up his cleats and pads…

Notre Dame linebacker Will Schweitzer announced his retirement from football on Wednesday. Schweitzer was diagnosed with a heart condition in the fall. Schweitzer announced the news on social media as Notre Dame was getting set to open spring practice.

Schweitzer came to Notre Dame from Los Gatos, California, where he was rated as a three-star recruit by each 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals. Schweitzer played in three games for the Irish during his career, recording a tackle in a 55-0 win over Georgia Tech in November of his freshman year.

All the best to Will in the rest of his time at Notre Dame and beyond.

Alabama RB Richard Young draws comparison to Josh Jacobs

Alabama freshman RB Richard Young is already being compared to former Crimson Tide standout Josh Jacobs.

Alabama football will see plenty of young, new faces see the field in 2023. One of them is true freshman running back Richard Young, who joins the team as a four-star prospect from Florida. Young is already drawing comparisons to former Crimson Tide star, Josh Jacobs.

ESPN’s Craig Haubert and Tom Luginbill decided to compile a list of the top 2023 recruits that could see the field in the upcoming season and find their respective player comparisons.

Jacobs was a standout for the Crimson Tide and broke out in the 2018 season. His strength and speed led to him being the first running back selected in the 2019 NFL draft.

Haubert and Luginbill see similarities in the two running backs. Despite Young having not yet played a down of college football, he’s expected to be a key contributor for the Crimson Tide’s offense over the next few seasons.

“Jacobs looked like a scat back early in his career but developed into more of a physical runner than people expected. He rushed for more than 2,000 yards, posting 21 touchdowns. He was never the feature back, but maybe the most important component of the offense during his tenure because of all the traits he possesses.

“Young is a feature back who is also effective in third-down situations. A slashing runner who can push the pile and has contact balance, he is a rare blend of power (5-11, 195) and suddenness. He may not possess elite top-end speed (he still ran a 10.8 100-meter in high school and consistently pulled away on long runs), however neither did Jacobs, who ran a 4.6 40 at the NFL combine.”

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover Young and other Alabama players as the 2023 season approaches.

Which bowl game is Florida projected to make ahead of the 2022 season?

After falling to UCF in the Gasparilla Bowl last year, Florida is hoping to bounce back in 2022-23.

Florida football returns in 40 days and that means it’s time for the preseason bowl game predictions to start pouring in. College Football News projects the Gators to face off with the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl on January 2.

UF was projected to land in the Citrus Bowl plenty of times last year before the wheels ultimately fell off and Gator Nation was forced to lower its expectations. A 29-17 loss to the UCF Knights in the Gasparilla Bowl was the eventual outcome in 2021, but now the team is under new leadership and looking to bounce back.

While Dan Mullen did end up making a New Year’s Six bowl game in each of his first three seasons with Florida, he inherited a much better situation than he left Billy Napier. Although Napier was hired to get the Gators back into contention for a national championship, a Citrus Bowl appearance in the 2022-23 season would be an appropriate sign of progress from last year.

Speaking of national championships, CFN has a pair of SEC teams making the College Football Playoff. Alabama and Georgia are projected to clash in the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Eve, and Ohio State and Clemson are in the Fiesta Bowl. A prospective national championship game between Alabama and Ohio State is what CFN opts to go with if forced to pick winners in the semifinal.

5-star QB recruiting target sets official visit date to Florida

This would be a huge pull for Florida football’s recruiting team.

The recruiting trail is blazing hot as the summer months begin to roll in, and for Florida football, June looks like it will be hopping for [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and his staff. After spending the spring season hobnobbing with the top prospects in the nation both on and off campus, the Gators are getting set to host a laundry list of coveted recruits over the next month looking to lure them to the Swamp.

Among those set to swing through Gainesville this month is coveted 5-star quarterback [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag] out of Pittsburg, California, who recently had an “eye-opening” unofficial visit to UF where he spent two days getting to know the program better. On Thursday – a week after his stop — his father Harlen told 247Sports that he and his son plan on visiting the Gators from June 7-9.

The younger Rashada offered the following to 247Sports recruiting analyst Greg Biggins after the previous visit.

“I was really impressed with everything they had to offer and really enjoyed getting to know [Florida head coach Billy] Napier and [quarterbacks analyst Ryan] O’Hara. They’re good guys and very smart when it comes to the quarterback position. For me, [quarterback] development is a big part of my decision and I think that’s a strength with those guys and why I have so much interest right now.”

The 6-foot-4-inch, 185-pounder’s commitment date is set for June 18, choosing from a final seven of Florida, California, LSU, Miami, Ole Miss, Oregon and Texas A&M. He currently has official visits set to see the Texas A&M Aggies from June 3-5 as well as LSU from June 5-7 in addition to UF.

Rashada is the No. 30 prospect overall and the No. 5 quarterback nationally in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite which gives him a five-star rating, while the On3 Consensus has him at No. 58 and No. 7, respectively, and a four-star rating. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine currently has Florida overtaking Oregon to lead his suitors with a 26.6% chance of landing him with the Ducks dropping to 22.6% and Texas A&M in third at 19.4%.

Reaction to Notre Dame scheduling FCS Tennessee State

Does anyone out there like this?

Notre Dame football is doing something they’ve never done previously as they’ll host Tennessee State the first weekend of September next year.  It will be the home-opener for the Irish after they take on Navy in Dublin the week before.

Notre Dame is one of three teams to have never played an FCS program.  The other two are Los Angeles based as UCLA and USC are the only others that haven’t.  Notre Dame is headed towards leaving that incredibly small group and as you can probably guess, Fighting Irish fans were not happy when the news came out on Tuesday afternoon.

Take a look at just a few of the angry reactions below.

Notre Dame to end streak of not playing FCS football program

How do you feel about this decision?

Notre Dame will open the home portion of the 2023 football season against Tennessee State.  It will be Notre Dame’s first game in program history against an FCS program.

I’ll have more thoughts on this later but initially I’m not thrilled.  I will say that if it is ending that I’m happy to see it occur against a Historically Black College and University like Tennessee State is, but that aside, I was a fan of the Irish having never previously played an FCS team.

The Ohio State connection will be strong come Sept. 2, 2023 as Marcus Freeman will be coaching the Irish and the [autotag]Heisman Trophy[/autotag] winning Buckeye [autotag]Eddie George[/autotag] is currently the Tennessee State head coach.
