OU Softball slams Cyclones 5-0, moves on to Big 12 Championship

The Oklahoma Sooners advanced to yet another Big 12 Championship on the back of Lynnsie Elam’s grand slam and Hope Truatwein’s 14 strikeouts.

The Oklahoma Sooners advanced to the Big 12 Championship after a 5-0 win over the Iowa State Cyclones on Friday. Hope Trautwein led the way with 14 strikeouts and a grand slam courtesy of Lynnsie Elam provided all the run support the Sooners needed.

The Sooners are looking for their fifth consecutive Big 12 tournament crown and will play the winner of the Oklahoma State-Texas matchup in tomorrow’s final.

“On fire” doesn’t even come close to the performance Hope Trautwein put on display on Friday afternoon in Oklahoma City. She retired Iowa State in order four times in seven innings. Today’s semi-final was her 16th win of the season.

Offensively, OU jumped on ISU early with  two singles and a walk to load the bases in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Lynnsie Elam walked to the plate. Elam then provided the fireworks with her first inning grand slam.

After an RBI single from Rylie Boone in the bottom of the second, the Sooners were up 5-0 early in this contest. It would be all they needed to secure yet another birth to the Big 12 Championship.

The Longhorns-Cowgirls game starts at 4 p.m. The Longhorns handed the Sooners their lone loss of the season back in April.

The Big 12 Championship will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. Catch the action on ESPN2.

Oklahoma Sooners softball dominates Big 12 awards

The Oklahoma Sooners pull in six first-team awards and dominate the individual All-Big 12 honors.

After an incredible 45-1 season that culminated in their 10th straight regular season title, the Oklahoma Sooners dominated the Big 12’s all-conference awards.

Oklahoma had six first-team and one second-team selections to lead the conference and swept the individual awards as well.

Though the Sooners played to a litany of run-rule victories, they did face their fair share of adversity on their way to an incredible season. Like Saturday in the Bedlam and Big 12 regular season finale, the Sooners faced a one-run deficit in the fifth inning before Jocelyn Alo came through in the clutch with her second grand slam of the season.

As the Sooners get set for Big 12 tournament play, let’s take a look at each of the awards handed out to Oklahoma Sooners.

The Oklahoma Sooners softball team clinched the Big 12 regular season title Saturday night with a 6-0 win over Oklahoma State. It was another strong performance by [autotag]Hope Trautwein[/autotag] and [autotag]Jordy Bahl[/autotag] to pick up yet another shutout win for the Sooners.

On scene to throw out the first pitch was Oklahoma Football coach [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag], who brought the energy in the pre-game to get the crowd and [autotag]Patty Gasso[/autotag]’s squad fired up.

Over the last several years OU Softball has become must-see television and the Sooners have delivered in prime time. Their energy and passion for the game is infectious and have been a big part of the growth of the game over the last decade.

Oklahoma still has one more game in the regular season before they take on the Big 12 for the tournament crown and prepare for the College World Series. But before we move on, let’s relive the magic from Saturday night’s 6-0 win over Oklahoma State.

Jordy Bahl goes 7 innings, Tiare Jennings homers in Oklahoma’s 7-1 win over Oklahoma State

Jordy Bahl dazzled for seven strong innings and the Sooners’ offense took off in the fourth to beat Oklahoma State 7-1 on Thursday night.

The Oklahoma Sooners took the first game in their three-game series with rival Oklahoma State 7-1 on Thursday night behind seven strong innings of work from star true freshman pitcher [autotag]Jordy Bahl[/autotag]. [autotag]Tiare Jennings[/autotag] provided a three-run blast and eight of nine Sooners starters reached base in the impressive win over the Cowgirls.

Bahl, in her first Bedlam matchup, put the Sooners one win away from clinching their 10th consecutive Big 12 regular-season title with a complete-game performance. On the evening, she allowed just four hits and one earned run over seven innings. The run came in the fifth inning after Bahl was staked to a 5-0 lead.

[autotag]Jocelyn Alo[/autotag] got the scoring going with an RBI single in the third inning. Later in the frame, Tiare Jennings put Oklahoma ahead in a big way with her three-run home run to give the Sooners a commanding 4-0 lead.

And while Alo and Jennings plated the Sooners’ first runs of the games with their at-bats, it was [autotag]Jana Johns[/autotag]’ work in a 12-pitch at-bat that turned the tide for the Sooners against Oklahoma State ace and National Player of the Year top 10 finalist [autotag]Kelly Maxwell[/autotag].

Oklahoma now sits one game in front of Oklahoma State for the Big 12 regular-season title. With a win on Friday night in the second leg of the series, the Sooners will clinch the Big 12 regular-season title and take the top seed in the Big 12 tournament.

Sooners bats kept in check, drop finale to Texas Longhorns 4-2 in Red River series win

Oklahoma Softball drops its first game of the season in a 4-2 loss to Hailey Dolcini and the Texas Longhorns.

Through four innings on Saturday, [autotag]Jordy Bahl[/autotag] and Hailey Dolcini were putting on a repeat performance of the Thursday night opener of the Red River series in Austin. In that matchup, Bahl and the Oklahoma Sooners came out on top in the 3-0 win over the Texas Longhorns. On Saturday, however, it was Dolcini and the Longhorns who would come away with the win.

The Longhorns hold the distinction of handing the Sooners their first loss of the season and ending a 40-game winning streak dating back to the championship of the 2021 College Softball World Series. Oklahoma started the season 38-0, a new record, and are now 38-1 after a tough loss to Texas.

Dolcini carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, keeping Oklahoma’s stout offense off-balance all afternoon. In the seventh, after getting the first out of the game, [autotag]Jayda Coleman[/autotag] broke up the no-hitter with a single. It was the third time she’d reach base on the day after getting hit by a pitch twice in the close matchup.

After Coleman got on to attempt a late rally, [autotag]Kinzie Hansen[/autotag] drove her in with her seventh home run of the season to make the game 4-2. And that’s where it would stay as Dolcini closed it out to give Oklahoma their only blemish on the season.

Though she picked up the first loss of her Sooners career, Jordy Bahl pitched well and battled through some tough spots. She had nine strikeouts and three walks, and allowed three earned runs in the matchup. It was the first time in 21 games that Oklahoma’s pitching staff had allowed more than one run in a game.

Oklahoma’s top of the order of Tiare Jennings, Jocelyn Alo, and Grace Lyons were a combined 0-9 in the game and 3 for 28 in the series. While the Oklahoma Sooners boast a deep lineup, they have to get more from their top three hitters as they move forward.

Head Coach Patty Gasso spoke after the loss. “To be realistic, we weren’t going to go undefeated through the season. It was just a matter of time,” Gasso told SoonerSports.com. “We got outplayed, and that’s exactly why we have our first loss. They earned it. They played well, their pitcher was fantastic and they did everything right. That’s what it came down too. We take this back to Norman and we refine and we get better. That’s what you do with losses.”

It was improbable that the Oklahoma Sooners were going to go undefeated. There are too many good teams in college softball and all it takes is an opposing pitcher to get hot to take you out of the game. And that’s what happened here. Hailey Dolcini pitched a near-perfect game and the Longhorns took advantage of some miscues by the Oklahoma Sooners defense.

But that shouldn’t take away from the tremendous run they’ve been on this season or dampen expectations either. This is a learning opportunity for Patty Gasso’s crew and they’ll be up for the challenges they’ll face as the season progresses.

Oklahoma Sooners sweep Texas Tech with 21-0 win, set NCAA record

The Oklahoma Sooners complete their three game sweep on record-setting fashion with a 21-0 win over Texas Tech.

Patty Gasso and the Oklahoma Sooners softball program continue to set the new standard for excellence with each passing day. With their 21-0 win today, the Sooners moved to 36-0, setting a new NCAA record for best start to the season.

The Sooners jumped on top of Texas Tech early and often hitting seven home runs, including two by Jocelyn Alo and grand slam by Tiare Jennings.

Jordy Bahl and Nicole May combined for a no hitter over five innings and the Sooners secured their 30th run-rule win of the season.

After Tiare Jennings struck out to open the game, Jocelyn Alo doubled and Kinzie Hansen hit the first of Oklahoma’s seven home runs to kickoff the scoring. The Sooners would go on to score 13 runs in the first two innings to leave no doubt about the outcome of their matchup with Texas Tech.

Alo’s two home runs now give her 21 on the season. Grace Lyons continued her incredible run with her 17th home run of the year and Jennings now has 16 after her fifth inning grand slam. Alyssa Brito and Jana Johns also went deep for Oklahoma who is on pace to break the single season home run mark they set a year ago.

In the Sooners three-game sweep of Texas Tech, Oklahoma outscored the Red Raiders 43-0.

Oklahoma Softball blasts Texas Tech again 11-0, moves to 35-0

In the second game of the series, the Sooners beat Texas Tech again 11-0 led by 4 home runs and a strong performance from Hope Trautwein.

The freight train that is the Oklahoma Sooners simply could not be stopped as OU once again beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders 11-0 in another run-rule victory. It was their 29th run rule win of the season to move to 35-0. Oklahoma is 5-0 in Big 12 play in 2022 and hasn’t lost a conference series since 2011.

Redshirt Senior Hope Trautwein was nearly flawless on the mound as she pitched yet another gem. Trautwein struck-out 7 batters and allowed only one hit on the afternoon to get her tenth win on the season. The only blemish to her stellar day was four walks, but Trautwein is now 10-0 and leads the nation with a 0.12 ERA.

The Sooners’ pitching staff has thrown four consecutive shutouts and hasn’t allowed more than one run in a game since March 10 against Baylor. That was also a run-rule victory.

The Sooners have the best ERA in the nation at 0.65. The second best? That would be UCLA at 1.16.

The Sooners once again blasted Texas Tech out of the ballpark with another four home runs to bring their total in the series to 10. Grace Lyons, Kinzie Hansen, Tiare Jennings and Grace Green all went yard on Saturday.

The Sooners also had some action on the basepaths with Hannah Coor and Turiya Coleman both stealing a base.

Oklahoma and Texas Texh will face off in the series finale on Sunday, with a first pitch slated for noon.

Oklahoma Softball: The streak continues as OU run-rules Tulsa

There wasn’t an empty seat in the house at Marita Haynes Field as the Oklahoma Sooners played the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Wednesday night.

There wasn’t an empty seat in the house at Marita Haynes Field as the Oklahoma Sooners played the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Wednesday night. The packed ballpark gave the campus a certain buzz when walking by.

It was just another day at the office for the best softball team in the nation as they claimed a 9-0 run-rule victory to improve to a 33-0 record on the season. Wednesday night was their 27th win by run-rule this year.

Sophomore [autotag]Nicole May[/autotag] picked up her tenth win on the season. She struck out six batters while walking three through five innings of work.

The Sooners were less powerful than usual at the plate with just one extra base hit on the evening; a double by [autotag]Lynnsie Elam[/autotag]. However, don’t mistake this for a lackluster hitting performance. Oklahoma didn’t struggle at the plate.

OU’s offense peppered Tulsa for 10 hits in the four innings. Eight different Sooners had an RBI against Tulsa. Jana Johns led the way, bringing in two, both on a fielders choice.

The Sooners were busy on the base paths, with five stolen bases on the night.

With Wednesday’s win, OU tied the program’s best start to a season which was set just last year. They can break the record on Friday night in Lubbock against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

The 19-16 Red Raiders are coming off a loss to Kansas, but hold a 13-3 record this season when playing at home. They are 2-4 in Big 12 play.

How does Oklahoma Softball stack up statistically against the Big 12 and the NCAA?

Taking a look at how the Oklahoma Sooners stack up against the Big 12 and the country statistically in the 2022 season.

In 2021, the Oklahoma Sooners set the record for most home runs in a season with 161, breaking Hawaii’s record on their way to a fifth national championship. It was an impressive feat that saw the Sooners set a new standard for offensive output. In 2022, they look like their redefining the game once again.

The Sooners are 32-0, with 26 wins coming in run-rule fashion. They lead the nation with 83 home runs. With 18 regular season games remaining, two to three games in the Big 12 championship, and anywhere from 10-15 games in the College World Series, the Oklahoma Sooners could push to break their record from a year ago.

Unreal.

In addition to their offensive dominance, the Sooners are leading the way from the circle as well. OU is first in the country in earned run average at 0.67. UCLA is the next best at 1.16.

In 2021, the Sooners secured 24 shutout victories in 60 games. Through 32 games in 2022, Oklahoma has recorded 17 shutouts. If the pitching holds up like it has, they’ll far surpass their shutout total from a year ago.

Patty Gasso’s squad has been so good in 2022 that the talk of an undefeated season doesn’t seem that unreasonable. While highly unlikely, the way Oklahoma hits and pitches and how they’ve battled against adversity means they’re never out of a game. And like we saw on Saturday against UAB, it only takes a moment for the Sooners to find their bats.

Below, we look at how the Sooners rank in the country and the Big 12 statistically.
