Winners and losers at the 2022 NFL trade deadline

The #Bills end up on the positive side of the ledger (via @NFL_DougFarrar):

That the NFL has become more of a trade-heavy league in recent years was confirmed on November 1, right up to the 4:00 p.m. EST trade deadline. As ESPN’s Adam Schefter pointed out, the 10 trades made on deadline day marked a record.

There were a couple of major deals, and a few sleeper trades that could rise up over time. There were also teams that did nothing by the deadline, to the frustration of their fanbases.

Who are the winners and losers of this trade deadline day? Let’s take a look.

Bills’ Brandon Beane addresses pre-deadline Christian McCaffrey, Alvin Kamara rumors

#Bills’ Brandon Beane addresses pre-deadline Christian McCaffrey, Alvin Kamara rumors:

The Bills were connected to several players ahead of the 2022 NFL trade deadline.

On a few occasions, such names were from the running back position. In the end, the Bills did sling a deal with the Colts for Nyheim Hines, but was he the only one the team was interested in?

According to general manager Brandon Beane, that answer is no.

On Wednesday, Beane discussed all-things trade deadline. He said yes, to an extent, two names the Bills talked about were then-Panthers back Christian McCaffrey and the Saints’ Alvin Kamara.

Regarding McCaffrey, Beane himself made contact and checked in.

That was not exactly the case with the Saints, but someone from the Bills did ask what’s up. However, the ball never really got rolling there.

For Beane’s full breakdown on those rumors, check out the Spectrum News clip below:

Roquan Smith said he was ‘shocked’ to be traded to the Ravens, should probably be happy he escaped Chicago

Smith should probably be happy he jumped ship to a Super Bowl contender.

On a pure talent level, Roquan Smith is one of the NFL’s best pure off-ball linebackers. He wouldn’t have two Second-Team All-Pro selections if he wasn’t someone that could tilt the field in the favor of his defense. But despite his obvious talent, the now-former Chicago Bears linebacker revealed he was a little surprised by his recent blockbuster trade to the Baltimore Ravens.

Per a report from ESPN‘s Jamison Hensley — even despite a kerfuffle over his contract in the offseason — Smith said he was caught a little off-guard by the move to Baltimore:

“I didn’t plan to [get traded], but you know, life happens at times and got traded,” Smith said, flashing a wide grin. “So initially I was shocked. But I’m excited to be here. Good group of guys that’s contending for a title, and that’s what I’m in the game to play for — playing for a title.”

Ah, that latter sentiment is the key part, and something Smith should keep in mind as he adjusts to new teammates, a new facility, and a new coaching staff.

The Ravens are trying to win a Super Bowl this season, and they want Smith to be one of the pieces to their puzzle. The Bears, by contrast, might have a bright future with a blossoming Justin Fields, but they’re in no way, shape, or form ready for the bright lights of the postseason (if they even get there).

Oddsmakers with Tipico Sportsbook seem to agree with what Smith’s addition can do for the Baltimore defense. At the moment, the Ravens have the third-best odds of winning the AFC at +900 (behind the Bills and Chiefs). They are tied with the Cowboys at +1500 odds of winning Super Bowl 57 behind the Bills, Eagles, Chiefs, and 49ers).

In a chaotic year where there doesn’t seem to be much of a middle class in the NFL, the Ravens and Smith very well might find themselves in a great contending position come the winter. Smith should consider himself lucky in that regard.

From Bradley Chubb to Chase Claypool: How big trade targets fit with their new teams

How will Bradley Chubb, T.J. Hockenson, William Jackson III, and Chase Claypool fit with their new teams? It’s trade deadline tape time.

Tuesday marked the busiest trade deadline day in NFL history, with 12 deals going down on the day before the clock stopped at 4:00 p.m. EST. Of those deals, four have obvious immediate impact for the teams making the trades. The Miami Dolphins adding former Denver Broncos edge-rusher Bradley Chubb to their ranks, the Minnesota Vikings picking up ex-Lions tight end T.J. Hockenson in an NFC North swap, the Pittsburgh Steelers getting former Washington Commanders cornerback William Jackson III for basically an acceptance of Jackson’s salary, and the Steelers also dealing receiver Clade Claypool to the receiver-light Chicago Bears.

How will these deals work for the teams making them through the rest of the 2022 NFL season? Let’s hit the tape and the advanced metrics for a deep dive.

Tyreek Hill unleashed the most sinister laugh after learning of the Dolphins’ trade for Bradley Chubb

“MUAHAHAHAHA”

The Dolphins are in the midst of a surprisingly resurgent 2022 campaign. Revitalized by the presence of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, Tua Tagovailoa has looked like a legitimate franchise quarterback. Unfortunately, Miami’s porous defense — especially against the pass — left a lot to be desired.

At the wild 2022 NFL trade deadline, the Dolphins addressed their defensive needs by trading for Pro Bowl-level, former Broncos edge rusher Bradley Chubb.

As news of the trade was made official, Hill happened to be live-streaming himself playing a video game. And when he heard that the Dolphins added a talent like Chubb, the superstar cackled like a delighted madman at what it meant for Miami’s chances at contending in the AFC.

(Note: NSFW language in the clip below.)

I don’t know where that amazing laugh came from or why Hill unleashed it at that moment, but I’m not going to rain on his parade. That’s one of the best players in football realizing his current team doesn’t want to rest on its laurels. And judging by the Dolphins’ current standing in the AFC (+1300 to win the conference with Tipico Sportsbook; fourth-best) — Hill has every right to be so cartoonishly enthusiastic.

Winners and losers at the 2022 NFL trade deadline

The Steelers and Dolphins were the trade deadline’s biggest winners, while the Bears, Lions, and Packers might want to rethink their processes.

That the NFL has become more of a trade-heavy league in recent years was confirmed on November 1, right up to the 4:00 p.m. EST trade deadline. As ESPN’s Adam Schefter pointed out, the 10 trades made on deadline day marked a record.

NFL fans roasted Aaron Rodgers’ salty reaction to the Packers’ inactive NFL trade deadline

“This is fine. Everything’s fine,” Rodgers probably.

While a whirlwind of moves defined a chaotic 2022 NFL trade deadline for a host of contenders chasing the postseason and rebuilding teams looking to the future, one desperate squad was curiously absent from all the madness.

I’m talking, of course, about Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers. At 3-5, in a weird season of low quality, the Packers certainly aren’t out of the NFC postseason chase. They could’ve used some sort of playmaker like, say, a Chase Claypool (who went to rival Chicago instead) that could help their 38-year-old quarterback elevate the rest of a struggling roster.

Alas, that didn’t happen, and the Packers stayed quiet, with no significant additions that could help them down the stretch.

In a usual appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers seemed a little salty he didn’t have any notable news to talk about the Packers’ trade deadline:

Oh, man. Given Rodgers’ past history and displeasure with everything the Packers have done (or haven’t done) to support him, you just know he was quietly fuming that he didn’t get more help on the outside.

For what it’s worth, the Packers currently have +2000 odds (seventh-best) to win the NFC with oddsmakers at Tipico Sportsbook. You have to think that Green Bay missed a golden opportunity to help its aging quarterback make a playoff push and improve those chances.

8 biggest winners and losers (yikes, Aaron Rodgers) of the 2022 NFL trade deadline

The Bears and Jaguars’ investments in their young QBs headline a deadline of chaos.

Phew. Catch your breath yet?

What an absolutely WILD trade deadline. There used to be a time when the NFL deadline was nothing to write home about, with few players of consequence finding new homes. This year? Seemingly every major contender (for January 2023) and every rebuilding team (for the 2023 season) made some kind of move.

With so many moving parts, this whirlwind acquisition period is sure to have a demonstrative impact on this year’s playoff chase and many teams’ respective futures down the line.

From a few happy young quarterbacks to some veterans, more or less, being hung out to dry, let’s break down the biggest winners and losers of the 2022 NFL trade deadline.

Ranking every 2022 NFL trade deadline deal by its impact on the playoff race

There were 15 trades in two weeks leading up to the 2022 NFL trade deadline. Which ones will loom largest over this year’s playoff race?

Over the last two years, the NFL’s in season trade deadline has been the backdrop to an uncharacteristic flurry of action. 2022 took that a step further.

In the two weeks leading up to the November 1 cutoff, we saw All-Pros and former first round picks swap uniforms. Christian McCaffrey became the newest racehorse in Jimmy Garoppolo’s stable. The New York Giants wiped away the final first round pick of the Dave Gettleman era by making Kadarius Toney a Kansas City Chief.

And then, as Week 8 groaned to a close, things got wild. Nine trades went down on deadline day. Pro Bowlers on both sides of the ball were dealt. The 2023 NFL Draft took on a new shape while waves of picks changed hands.

This year’s NFL trade deadline was one of the most active in league history. Some of these deals will shape this January’s playoffs. Others have effects that won’t be felt until next fall, if at all. Let’s take a look at every in-season trade based on how much each will impact this year’s postseason race.

Chase Claypool trade grades: Who won the deal between the Steelers and Bears?

The Bears got a big explosive wideout by trading for Chase Claypool. Will he make a difference in Chicago?

Chase Claypool has been liberated. No longer will he have to play for an offense led by a shaky young quarterback protected by a cheesecloth line. Instead, he gets to play for —

OK wait hold on.

The third-year wideout is on the move after being traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Chicago Bears. He’ll swap out one run-first offense for another, leaving behind Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Matt Canada for Chicago’s Luke Getsy.

Is this an upgrade? Time will tell. If nothing else Claypool gets to shine a little brighter for an offense with few proven wideout talents beyond Darnell Mooney. Does that make this a good deal for the Bears? Well, there are layers to that …
