Woj: Boston Celtics Danilo Gallinari’s preferred destination after clearing waivers

Is the veteran wing about to become a Celtic?

The Boston Celtics may have an excellent option to use their mini midlevel exception (MLE) on once he clears waivers, according to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski. After the San Antonio Spurs finish their anticipated release of veteran wing Danilo Gallinari, “his preference is to join the Boston Celtics,” relates Woj.

While it is not certain Gallinari is the presumed favorite for Boston to use their MLE on with several other options reportedly in the mix for that price point of a contract, with mutual interest and a desire to don the green and white, it seems very likely the Italian forward will end up a Celtic very soon.

Gallinari is nearly 34 years old but has aged especially well even considering his non-negligible history of recurrent minor injuries, putting up 11.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 38.1% from beyond the arc with the Atlanta Hawks in the 2021-22 season.

UPDATE: The Boston Herald’s Mark Murphy reports that the Celtics indeed expect to sign the Italian wing — stay locked in for more details on this unfolding story on the Celtics Wire.

Report: Celtics looking to sign former Washington Wizards big man Thomas Bryant

The big man is expected to decide later this morning.

The Boston Celtics are reportedly looking to sign free agent big man Thomas Bryant according to new reporting from Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes. The former Washington Wizards reserve center is looking to find himself a new home as a backup big man, and per Haynes is also considering the Los Angles Lakers, who he played for in his rookie season.

The 6-foot-10, 250-llb. Indiana product missed most of last season after partially tearing his ACL with the Wizards in January of 2021, and only played a handful of games in the latter half of the 2021-22 season as a result. With his knee likely fully rehabilitated by this point, Boston might see something similar to his numbers before the accident, which saw him put up 14.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and nearly a block per game.

If Bryant did sign with the Celtics, he’d likely have a slightly smaller role, but would still likely see considerable floor time while Boston keeps Al Horford and Rob Williams III‘s minutes down until the postseason.

The Yahoo Sports reporter expects Bryant to make his decision later today.

Boston reportedly among frontrunners to sign Danilo Gallinari if bought out

The Italian wing might also sign with the Bulls or Heat if bought out by the Spurs.

After being traded to the San Antonio Spurs as part of the deal bringing All-Star point guard to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday afternoon, veteran wing Danilo Gallinari may be headed to the buyout market. According to NBA Italia’s Zeno Pisani that along with the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat, Boston is expected to be among the frontrunners for his services in free agency once his buyout is completed.

The 6-foot-10 wing has never been known for his defense, but his long-range shooting (career 38.2% from beyond the arc on 5.1 attempts per game), rebounding, and ability to move the ball a bit all tick off boxes that would make for a solid fit with the Celtics off of the bench.

A longtime friend of Pisani since Gallinari played for the Los Angeles Clippers, the Sant’Angelo Lodigiano native’s services will be in demand for the 2022-23 season.

Kings’ Donte DiVincenzo reportedly a free agency target for the Boston Celtics

The 25-year-old wing has struggled to stay healthy recently but could be a solid option for wing depth if he can stay on the floor.

The Boston Celtics reportedly have their sights on another young wing to use their $6.4 million mini- midlevel exception (MLE) on for the coming 2022-23 NBA season who last played for the Sacramento Kings, according to the Boston Herald’s Mark Murphy.

Per the Herald reporter, “Donte DiVincenzo, now a free agent after Sacramento decided not to extend a qualifying offer to the talented wing player, is stacking up as another Celtics target.” Wing scorers are evidently the focus for Boston in free agency, should reports that the team has also been interested in TJ Warren and Danilo Gallinari.

Traded to the Kings from the Milwaukee Bucks as part of a four-team trade at the 2022 trade deadline, the 6-foot-4 Villanova product has struggled with injury throughout his career, never playing in more than 66 games in a season and just 42 in 2021-22.

His shooting efficiency was notably poor overall last season as well, though he managed to shoot 36.8% from deep with Sacramento in his final 25 games of the season.

A solid defender with a 6-foot-6 wingspan, DiVincenzo would also help improve depth on that end of the court, though the key element moving forward to the Delaware native being worth the team’s MLE is of course how healthy he will be while on it.

As word of a higher salary cap circulate, Boston reportedly plans on ‘spending well into the tax’

Boston and the rest of the NBA may have a little more wiggle room as a result of projected cap figures going up — and they reportedly plan to use it.

The NBA may soon see the expected salary cap for the 2022-23 season rise considerably, with ESPN’s Tim Bontemps reporting it will rise from the previous projection of $112 million to $123.6 million. While the actual number is not quite yet set, the rising salary cap will affect teams around the league.

The Boston Celtics will likely see the value of their mini- mid-level exception (MLE) rise to $6.47 million from prior estimates of around $6.39 million. Over the course of a full three-year MLE contract, that would add close to a quarter of a million dollars, making such a contract just a little more attractive to prospective free agents.

Perhaps more interestingly, the news would lift the luxury tax line by about $1.5 million — and this with more news from MassLive’s Brian Robb that the Celtics are willing to make use of it.

Per Robb’s sources, the team “plans on spending well into the tax” — welcome news to fans who have seen other ball clubs clutch the purse strongs when it comes time to contend.

Celtics reportedly to decline Sam Hauser’s team option, work out longer deal

It seems the Virginia product’s future is with Boston.

Less than an hour ahead of the start of the 2022 NBA free agency period’s start, some more rumbles of the Boston Celtics‘ plans are coming into focus. And while he may not be a central part of the Celtics’ offseason plans, forward Sam Hauser is clearly a part of them with Celtics Blog’s Keith Smith reporting that Boston is declining their $1.6 million team option for the 2022-23 season with Hauser in the hopes of signing him to a longer deal.

The Celtics signed the Virginia product as an undrafted free agent after Hauser went unselected in the 2021 NBA draft, and while the 24-year-old sharpshooter did not find much floor time with Boston in their 2021-22 campaign, he’s also shown a lot of promise.

While it’s unclear if he can defend well enough to earn a bigger role next season, he shot 43.2% from beyond the arc on 44 attempts.

That’s a small sample size, but with a virtually identical 43.3% out of 90 attempts at the G League level with the Maine Celtics and a career 43.9% rate at the NCAA level makes a strong case that Boston ought to keep the Wisconsin native around to develop.

Which seems to be exactly what they hope to do.

Reportedly active Boston Celtics linked to Hawks’ John Collins ahead of 2022 free agency

The Kings and Bulls are also reported to be interested in Collins.

The Boston Celtics are reportedly ” more active than you’d think for a team that just reached the Finals in terms of trade talks” according to The Action Network’s Matt Moore, but don’t get your hopes up for fireworks. Moore relates that Boston is “not looking to disrupt the core that just brought them within two wins of a championship,” and instead “periphery bench players … have been offered in deals for picks.”

What direction that might see the team turn as free agency kicks off is unknown, but the intention to make upgrades around the margins could manifest along a number of lines from the use of any of Boston’s several traded player exceptions (which could be greased by the assets Moore references) to outright signings with the team’s mini-mid-level exception (up to $6.4 million) or minimum deals.

Another clue about what might be on the Celtics’ agenda is Moore’s reporting that Boston is, along with the Sacramento Kings and Chicago Bulls, among the three clubs pursuing Atlanta’s John Collins.

Collins would make a lot of sense for the Celtics as a target for the right price but depends on what Atlanta has planned and what Boston is willing to offer.

Should Atlanta find Collins a key part of their future either as a trade asset to improve the team elsewhere or as a part of their rotation, he may be priced out of what the Celtics could offer in return.

Report: Boston Celtics ‘linked to Danilo Gallinari and TJ Warren’ ahead of 2022 free agency start

B/R’s Jake Fischer is hearing Boston is asking after bigger wings.

As the 2022 NBA offseason’s free agency period inches closer to the Thursday 6 pm ET start which will allow franchises to get to work in their process of teambuilding we are starting to hear rumbles of what the Boston Celtics are hoping to accomplish in it.

Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer reports that the Celtics seem to be focusing on bigger wings ahead of the start of free agency. “Boston appears focused on high-scoring, small-ball forwards for the Celtics’ mid-level,” writes the B/R reporter. “They have been linked to Danillo Gallinari and T.J. Warren, among others.”

Fischer also relates that Boston was one of several teams who had been inquiring after Atlanta Hawks big man John Collins at the draft, but none of those teams (including the Celtics) were currently close to a deal with the Hawks for Collins.

Gallinari would need to be waived, as he is under contract with Atlanta with just $5 million guaranteed. But with the Hawks looking like a team that may want to cut costs with a rapidly growing payroll, such a move is not out of the question.

Warren has some substantial health concerns moving forward but could pay off big if his often-injured foot remains healthy.

Expect plenty more rumors to percolate up in the coming hours and days — and with Boston fully in contention mode, we would rate the likelihood of moves of some sort to be likely, of perhaps not of the blockbuster variety.

Is wing scoring depth the Boston Celtics’ offseason priority?

If not, what ought to be?

Amid the debate over what the Boston Celtics need to focus on as they put together a new iteration of the squad that went to the 2022 NBA Finals with an intention of winning it all this time around, one aspect of the team that could easily help the Celtics in that regard is increased scoring ability on the wing.

While stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum may be young and on the rise, they cannot carry such a heavy load as they did throughout the 2021-22 NBA season and expect to be able to compete at their best against the most worthy opponents coming out of the West — and that scenario only happens in the first place if they have the horses to get back to the Finals.

Should Boston go all in on trading for or signing wing scoring? Or are there other, more pressing needs for the team?

What are the biggest needs of the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA offseason?

Should they look to consolidate their deep rotation players into more depth? If so, who should they trade for, and what kind of player ought they be looking after?

What are the biggest needs of the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA offseason? Should they look to consolidate their deep rotation players into more depth? If so, who should they trade for, and what kind of player ought they be looking after? Bigs? Wings? Floor generals? Is ballhandling a priority? How about shooting?

Then comes the way they build the team — they not only have the ability to sign players outright via either minimum salary deals or a mini-midlevel exception, they can also trade for players outright or by using one of several traded player exceptions (TPEs) accumulated over the course of the last year.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast got together on a recent episode to debate these issues facing the team ahead of a season they hope to contend for an NBA title.

Check out the clip embedded above to see what they have to say about what Boston needs to hang Banner 18.
