College football teams that could win their conference in 2022

These teams could emerge as Power Five conference champions.

We are just over two weeks away from the college football season. With anticipation building, there are a handful of Power Five teams that can pin their hopes on winning a conference title.

A number of teams can make their conference championship game, but few can win it.

Teams like Tennessee, Texas A&M and South Carolina have conference title appearance talent but will likely be knocked out by Alabama and Georgia. The same is true for Michigan State and Penn State who share a division with Ohio State and Michigan.

Elsewhere, the Big 12 and Pac-12 are wide open. Both have four teams that could conceivably win their respective conferences.

Matchups certainly play a factor. Baylor, who played Oklahoma and Texas at home last season, will travel to face those teams on the road in 2022.

Based on different factors, let’s take a look at which teams have the best chance to win their conference in 2022.

Josh Pate calls Quinn Ewers one of college football’s most important names

Quinn Ewers is one of the two most influential names in college football this season.

The Texas Longhorns have waded through mediocrity for the better part of 12 years. National college football commentator Josh Pate is curious if Quinn Ewers can change that.

On Sunday, Pate shared two individuals who could leave their mark on the 2022 football season. Redshirt freshman Quinn Ewers was one of them.

Pate nominated Ewers and new Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles for his two potential most influential names in college football this fall.

Texas fans are familiar with Knowles. The innovative defensive mind was a talent maximizer at Oklahoma State before leaving for Columbus, Ohio.

As for Ewers, Pate’s statement gives credence to the young quarterback’s high school rating. Though you could not tell by his mullet, scraggly beard and average build, Ewers was the No. 1 quarterback in two recruiting classes before joining Texas.

Undoubtedly there will be growing pains, but the Southlake Carroll standout has a tremendous opportunity should he win the starting job. We will see if the generational arm talent can elevate Texas’ play to its hype level for the first time since Colt McCoy wore the burnt orange.

Texas Football: Five developments we would love to see in 2022

There is a way to bring the best out of the Texas offensive line this season.

The Texas Longhorns enter the highly anticipated second year of the Steve Sarkisian era. Coming off a 5-7 season, Texas needs to improve in more than a few areas to win more games.

This year’s squad will have the benefit of improvement in the trenches. If nothing else, the Longhorns will have more, “big humans,” at the line of scrimmage that this staff covets.

Additionally, they will have an abundance of elite players at skill positions. If you missed it this week, Texas had two running backs make the Doak Walker Award preseason watch list and two receivers make the Fred Biletnikoff watch list.

Ja’Tavion Sanders qualified for the preseason Mackey Award list, and Jahleel Billingsley probably should have made it, too.

On defense there is confidence that the secondary can play more aggressive coverage this year.

Here are a few things that I would like to see occur this season.
