What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 2 of the college football season?

Where are the good bowl ties for the Sun Belt?

Here’s the problem for the league after a great Saturday like it just had – it doesn’t have a whole lot of high-profile bowl games to go to, and the league might be good enough that everyone will pick each other off so no one can rise up and get the New Year’s Six spot.

As always, this is a best guess on how this is all going to work, knowing there will be a hundred twists and turns along the way.

And even after everything that happened on Saturday, at the very, very top, nothing really changes – for now. Here are the latest bowl projections.

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 1

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 1 of the college football season?

It’s way too early for the bowl projections to be this tough.

There were always too many teams for bowl slots throughout the offseason, and now others that didn’t seem like they’d be in the mix – Southern Miss, Ohio, and possible Old Dominion, South Alabama, Rutgers, and Arizona – have to at least be considered.

If you don’t see your school in here, relax. This will be fluid with drastic changes every week.

There’s also the potential problem of the Big Ten and Big 12 not having enough slots for all the eligible teams. That will work itself out, too.

And then there’s the craziness of the College Football Playoff, which has suddenly become a little less obvious than it previously seemed.

With all of that in mind, here are the latest bowl projections.

We’re not getting an expanded 12-team College Football playoff until 2026 – or maybe a year or two earlier if everything breaks right.

Contracts and logistics aside, what would the playoff be like if it started this season? Here’s the projection after Week 1 of what it might be.

This would go by the rankings from the College Football Playoff committee – not the AP or Coaches polls.

2. Ohio State (Big Ten): Rose Bowl
3. Clemson (ACC): Orange Bowl

11. Oklahoma State (Big 12) at
6. Michigan (Big Ten)

Here’s how it’s going to work (from the College Football Playoff):

1. The 12 teams will be the six conference champions ranked highest by the selection committee (no minimum ranking requirement), plus the six highest-ranked teams not included among the six highest-ranked conference champions.

2. The ranking of the teams will continue to be done by a selection committee whose size, composition, and method of selection will remain substantially unchanged.

3. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye.

4. The other eight teams will play in the first round with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded institution (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8.

5. The model allows for first-round games to be played on either the second or third weekend in December in a way that best accommodates the format and the participating teams, with at least 12 days between the conference championship games and the first-round games. The Management Committee would make the final determination of the calendar.

6. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four quarterfinal games and two Playoff Semifinal games would be played in bowls on a rotating basis.

7. The national championship game will continue to be played at a neutral site.

8. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four highest-ranked conference champions will be assigned to quarterfinals bowls on selection day in ranking order, and in consideration of current contract bowl relationships if those bowls are selected for the rotation. For example, if the Pac-12 champion were ranked #1, the Big Ten champion were ranked #3, and the Rose Bowl were a quarterfinal site, the Pac-12 champion would be assigned to the Rose Bowl and the Big Ten champion would be assigned elsewhere.

9. With the four highest-ranked champions assigned to quarterfinal games in bowls, the opponent from first-round game winners will be assigned by the selection committee based on the bracket.

10. The higher seeds would receive preferential placement in the Playoff Semifinal games.

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after a light opening over the college football season?

Usually there aren’t many big changes to the bowl projections after Week 0 – especially when almost everything goes according to plan – but a few things happened since we came out with our 2022 Preview version.

Northwestern beating Nebraska was the biggest one of the bunch – even if that has nothing to do with the College Football Playoff predictions.

Like the preseason bowl projections, though, the goal is to come up with a starting point to work off of. Remember, ESPN is going to try creating the biggest and best matchups possible, and that includes shoehorning in a few eligible Big Ten teams. That might mean a bowl tie-in is blown off, and it could mean that ESPN creates a bowl game for more inventory.

For now, if you don’t see your team here – especially if it’s a Power Five program – assume that if it gets to six wins it’ll find a home somewhere no matter what. We didn’t want to get too crazy yet … at least until a switched up College Football Playoff projection.

For everything else, we’ll assume most bowl ties will stay put.

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Preseason Preview 2022

Bowl Projections: The preseason call at the possible post-season matchups and College Football Playoff games going into the 2022 campaign.

It’s the most fun time of the year.

It’s bowl projection and College Football Playoff prediction season, when nothing is too crazy, all the speculation makes perfect sense, and all of it done with the joyful hope that the CFP calls aren’t even close – the chase is SO much more fun when teams outside the norm are involved.

It’s also that time for the annual reminder of the ground rules.

1. ESPN wants the best matchups possible. Therefore, we have to take into account that BYU has to get a decent bowl slot, and the bigger Power Five programs available might be the call over Group of Five teams, just because. Or …

2. ESPN can just create another bowl – or five – if needed. Last year, we didn’t just get the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl, we were also given the Frisco Bowl Classic at the absolute last second because there were too many bowl eligible teams. (Miami University beat North Texas 27-14, by the way.)

So if you don’t see your team here, as long as it gets to six wins, there’s going to be a post-season home somewhere. That goes along with our annual heads-up …

Oh why not?

The bowl schedule just came out without any real shockers – other than the Sugar Bowl will be played early on a Saturday morning when everyone cares about the NFL – but it’s still fun.

After spring ball and before we finish with all the team-by-team previews, here’s the first look at how the 2022-2023 bowl season might shake out.

First, though …

1. Bowl tie-ins don’t necessarily mean they’re a lock, and they could change fast. The Sun Belt will probably need more options with the expanded league – Conference USA doesn’t need as many – and in the end, it’s all about …

2. ESPN. It’s goal with the owned and operated bowls – and with the schedule as a whole – is to come up with the best matchups possible. There might be a few set conference tie-ins that aren’t adhered to.

3. Don’t get into any sort of a twist if your team isn’t here. There are about 15 worthy schools that need to find a home – it’s a problem that some conferences just aren’t going to have enough contracted slots.

If you don’t see your favorite here – Big 12 fans, this is for you and your conference without enough options – give it a bit before we do this again in August when we go into more deeper detail on each projection and why. Then feel free to yell at us.

And yes, we go a little off the grid for one College Football Playoff pick.
