In this wildest of years, an expanded College Football Playoff would make this season even more exciting.

Would Tennessee’s win over Alabama have meant as much if the playoff was expanded? Of course it would, because that would’ve all but sealed a spot in the playoff for the Vols – it’s hardly guaranteed in the current format.

But more than that, it’s going to be harder than you think to get into the top 12 – or top 11 if the top Group of Five champion is outside of the group.

Just look at the top three teams that wouldn’t get in.

The plan – potentially starting in 2023 – is to guarantee that the top six conference champions are in, and then the next six are in according to the CFP rankings.

Top Four Projected Seeds After Week 6
 (top four conference champions)

1. Georgia (SEC): Sugar Bowl
2. Ohio State (Big Ten): Rose Bowl
3. Clemson (ACC): Orange Bowl
4. TCU (Big 12): Cotton Bowl

At-Large Seeds

12. Cincinnati (AAC Champion) at
5. Tennessee (SEC)

11. Oklahoma State (Big 12) at
6. Michigan (Big Ten)

10. Oregon (Pac-12) at
7. Alabama (SEC)

9. UCLA (Pac-12) at
8. Ole Miss (SEC)

Top Three Teams That Would Be Left Out
USC (Pac-12), Wake Forest (ACC), Syracuse (ACC)

Here’s how it’s going to work (this is from the College Football Playoff):

1. The 12 teams will be the six conference champions ranked highest by the selection committee (no minimum ranking requirement), plus the six highest-ranked teams not included among the six highest-ranked conference champions.

2. The ranking of the teams will continue to be done by a selection committee whose size, composition, and method of selection will remain substantially unchanged.

3. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye.

4. The other eight teams will play in the first round with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded institution (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8.

5. The model allows for first-round games to be played on either the second or third weekend in December in a way that best accommodates the format and the participating teams, with at least 12 days between the conference championship games and the first-round games. The Management Committee would make the final determination of the calendar.

6. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four quarterfinal games and two Playoff Semifinal games would be played in bowls on a rotating basis.

7. The national championship game will continue to be played at a neutral site.

8. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four highest-ranked conference champions will be assigned to quarterfinals bowls on selection day in ranking order, and in consideration of current contract bowl relationships if those bowls are selected for the rotation. For example, if the Pac-12 champion were ranked #1, the Big Ten champion were ranked #3, and the Rose Bowl were a quarterfinal site, the Pac-12 champion would be assigned to the Rose Bowl and the Big Ten champion would be assigned elsewhere.

9. With the four highest-ranked champions assigned to quarterfinal games in bowls, the opponent from first-round game winners will be assigned by the selection committee based on the bracket.

10. The higher seeds would receive preferential placement in the Playoff Semifinal games.

Are you really sure Alabama is the No. 1 team in the country after the struggles it’s had with good teams?

Are you really sure Georgia would roll through a playoff after the hard time it had at Missouri a few weeks ago?

An expanded College Football Playoff is coming in a few years – the complete breakdown is below – but it would be nice if we had one this season.

The plan is to guarantee that the top six conference champions are in, and then the next six are in according to the CFP rankings.

2022 CFN College Football Schedule & Results

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 6

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 6 of the college football season?

It’s time to start really analyzing just how the College Football Playoff will really look now that we’ve seen all the likely key players in tough games. It’s not going to be easy as the obvious four teams, but we’ll save that for the College Football Playoff section at the end.

There are two key problems about to happen. First, the bowl tie-ins are going to get funky – the Mountain West is going to struggle to get more than a few teams in. That goes to the second problem – there probably won’t be enough eligible teams.

Let’s wait one more week to see how the upsets shake out and then get into all the five-win team scenarios.

For now. here’s how all the bowls project out.

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 5

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 5 of the college football season?

Now Rice is in the mix, and Michigan State is hanging on by a thread?

UTEP has a shot at a bowl and Louisville and Army are in trouble?

The number of projected teams that might finish with a winning record is starting to dwindle after all the upsets, but the New Year’s Six is looking interesting, and how the four will be set up in the College Football Playoff will change around several times over the new few months.

More and more, the idea of an expanded College Football Playoff to 12 teams seems like it’ll make the game better.

Just how much bigger is that Clemson win over NC State? How much better would that UCLA win over Washington have been? And this year, how crazy and frantic would the chase be for the Group of Five’s New Year’s Six slot.

Scroll down below for the official explanation of what the expanded CFP might be once it gets put in place. But for now, here’s how it would likely project as things stand right now and if they expanded this year.

2022 CFN College Football Schedule & Results

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 4

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 4 of the college football season?

The bowl projections get weirder than ever for three reasons.

First, who’s going to be there from the Group of Five who’ll be worthy of a New Year’s Six bowl spot? Second, there are going to be way too many eligible teams, and third, who the heck is that fourth team going to be in the College Football Playoff?

It’s a snapshot of what this all might be, along with an added bowl to handle the overflow.

The expanded College Football Playoff is coming. It’s not quite sure when, but we could really use it this year.

When it gets going, the top four teams get a bye, the higher seeds get the home campus advantage in the first round, and the ensuing rounds go to the bowls – scroll down to the bottom of this for the ins and outs of how it will all work.

Here’s how it would likely project as things stand right now and if they expanded this year – which they’re not.

Top Four Projected Seeds After Week 3
 (top four conference champions)

1. Georgia (SEC): Sugar Bowl
2. Ohio State (Big Ten): Rose Bowl
3. Clemson (ACC): Orange Bowl
4. USC (Pac-12): Cotton Bowl

At-Large Seeds

12. Cincinnati (AAC Champion) at
5. Alabama (SEC)

11. Penn State (Big Ten) at
6. Michigan (Big Ten)

10. NC State (ACC) at
7. Kentucky (SEC)

9. Tennessee (SEC) at
8. Oklahoma State (Big 12 Champion)

Top Three Teams That Would Be Left Out
Ole Miss (SEC), Utah (Pac-12), Oregon (Pac-12)

Here’s how it’s going to work (this comes from the College Football Playoff):

2022 CFN College Football Schedule & Results

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 3. UNLV? Arizona? Kansas?!

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 3 of the college football season?

It’s only the end of Week 3 in the college football season, and there are real, live, dreams that might just come true for several programs not used to being in the bowl hunt.

Could UNLV really get into a bowl? Yeah, the schedule in a mediocre Mountain West shapes up.

How about Arizona? After getting by North Dakota State, getting to six wins now appears to be possible.

Kansas?! If you’re going to do that to Houston and get to 3-0, let’s go, Jayhawks.

We’re also going with another big call – ESPN will revive its extra made-up bowl game it created last year.

Last year there were too many available bowl teams, so it created the Frisco Bowl Classic to give North Texas and Miami University a place to play. So let’s bring it back, only with two Power Five programs that could create one of the more fun early matchups.

As always, this will change wildly each week, but for now …

It looks like we really are going to get an expanded College Football Playoff appearance in the near future. It’s going to be a 12-team format with the top six ranked conference champions being in along with six at-large teams.

The top four teams get a bye, the higher seeds get the home campus advantage in the first round, and the ensuing rounds go to the bowls – scroll down for the ins and outs of how this will all work.

Here’s why we’re doing this – it’s going to be wild when this happens. For example, for the last spot to get in – remembering that the top six champions get the call – there would be a big debate in the CFP committee room over NC State, Tennessee, Utah, and Penn State for the last spot.

Here’s how it would likely project as things stand right now and if they expanded this year – which they’re not.

Is it possible we’re going to get an expanded 12-team College Football Playoff by 2024? That’s the hot rumor, but it’s probably not going to happen as soon as everyone might like.

How awesome would the expansion be this year after how things appear to be shaping up after a wild Week 2?

When this happens – scroll down for the full explanation from the CFP about how this is going to work – the top six ranked conference champions are in, the top four get a bye, and the higher seeds get the home campus advantage in the first round before they go to the big bowls in the second.

What’s the point of this? It’s going to be really, really hard to be one of those six non-champions to get in.

Here’s how it would likely project as things stands right now – and if they expanded this year.
