Bowl Projections College Football Playoff Predictions Week 11

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 11 of the college football season?

Bowl projections and College Football Playoff predictions after Week 11 over the 2022 season.

Just how many SEC teams can get into the New Year’s Six and College Football Playoff. The answer isn’t all of them, but there are enough to mess up everything else.

The explanation for how the College Football Playoff is projected to shake out starts with several big things happening in the conference championships and then trickling down to everything else. That means the bowl projections have a few twists and turns this week.

With UConn being bowl eligible and Arizona now projected to get by Washington State and Arizona State to get in, there should be just enough teams for all of the available spots. Even if there’s a miss somewhere, there’s going to be an extra MAC team, or Arkansas, or someone to rise up and rock over the next two weeks.

Two key things to note. First, with all the SEC teams projected to be in the big games, there aren’t a whole lot of options for all the slots – assuming the Arkansas-Missouri loser will be 5-7.

This is supposed to be the SEC’s turn in the Las Vegas Bowl – it alternates with the Big Ten – but with an extra Big Ten team projected available and no SEC team thanks to so many in the New Year’s Six, we’re going with the idea of filling the bowl bid with the alternate.

The second curveball came from the independents. With BYU, Liberty, and UConn all needing to find a home, the call is that BYU will take the MAC’s spot in the Famous Idaho Bowl to face a Mountain West team – it’s a better geographic fit.

Next week this will hopefully be a little clearer, but for now …

We’re not getting an expanded College Football Playoff for at least another season – more likely three – but it would be a whole lot of fun to see what it would be like if it was about the top 12 teams.

The plan – at least as proposed and likely to be how it works – the top six ranked conference champions are in, the top four conference champs get a bye, and it goes on down from there with the higher-ranked teams getting the game at home.

After the second College Football Playoff rankings were released, an expanded playoff would look like this …

[lawrence-related id=554214]

Top Four Projected Seeds After First College Football Playoff rankings
 (top four conference champions)

1. Georgia (SEC): Sugar Bowl
2. Ohio State (Big Ten): Rose Bowl
3. TCU (Big 12): Orange Bowl
4. Oregon (Pac-12): Cotton Bowl

At-Large Seeds

12. Tulane (AAC champion) at
5. Michigan (Big 12)

11. Ole Miss (Big 12) at
6. Tennessee (SEC)

10. Clemson (ACC champion) at
7. LSU (SEC)

9. Alabama (SEC) at
8. USC (Pac-12)

Top Four Teams That Would Be Left Out
UCLA (Pac-12), Utah (Pac-12), Penn State (Big Ten), North Carolina (ACC)

Here’s how it’s going to work (this is from the College Football Playoff):

1. The 12 teams will be the six conference champions ranked highest by the selection committee (no minimum ranking requirement), plus the six highest-ranked teams not included among the six highest-ranked conference champions.

2. The ranking of the teams will continue to be done by a selection committee whose size, composition, and method of selection will remain substantially unchanged.

3. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye.

4. The other eight teams will play in the first round with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded institution (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8.

5. The model allows for first-round games to be played on either the second or third weekend in December in a way that best accommodates the format and the participating teams, with at least 12 days between the conference championship games and the first-round games. The Management Committee would make the final determination of the calendar.

6. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four quarterfinal games and two Playoff Semifinal games would be played in bowls on a rotating basis.

7. The national championship game will continue to be played at a neutral site.

8. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four highest-ranked conference champions will be assigned to quarterfinals bowls on selection day in ranking order, and in consideration of current contract bowl relationships if those bowls are selected for the rotation. For example, if the Pac-12 champion were ranked #1, the Big Ten champion were ranked #3, and the Rose Bowl were a quarterfinal site, the Pac-12 champion would be assigned to the Rose Bowl and the Big Ten champion would be assigned elsewhere.

9. With the four highest-ranked champions assigned to quarterfinal games in bowls, the opponent from first-round game winners will be assigned by the selection committee based on the bracket.

10. The higher seeds would receive preferential placement in the Playoff Semifinal games.

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 10

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 10 of the college football season?

Well that just made everything more interesting.

It was a fun weekend of games with some massive moves up top – more on how this will shake out in the College Football Playoff race in a moment – but there were a few other key wins that should change the landscape of the bowl season.

Michigan State beating Illinois was one of them. Now the Spartans go from possibly going to a bowl game to almost certainly getting to six wins – if the wheels don’t come flying off.

BYU finally pulling up out of its nosedive to get by Boise State put it back into the bowl scene, and Kansas and Duke locked in six wins as part of their respecting amazing seasons.

At the moment there should be just enough bowl eligible teams to fill all of the slots, but this could all change in a hiccup with a few upsets in conference play, especially in the MAC and Sun Belt.

We’re just a few weeks away from having this sorted out, but for now …

Bowl Eligible Teams, Who’s On The Bubble Going Into Week 11

What college football teams are already bowl eligible, which ones are out of the mix, and which teams are on the bubble with three weeks to go?

There are a few tweaks here and there – you need seven wins if two came against FCS teams (this matters for Army and Appalachian State) – but for the most part a team needs to get six wins to become bowl eligible.

That’s why the emotions were running so high on the sidelines after Kansas beat Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Below is the status of every college football team the it comes their respective bowl situations. What’s every team’s remaining schedule?

This would be a wonderful year to have an expanded College Football Playoff.

It’s not happening for at least another season – if not a few – but it’s needed now to avoid putting this all on the opinions of a panel of judges.

Teams should be able to play their way in, there shouldn’t be a debate over two worthy teams, and …

That’s for later. For now we still have the four-team version, but what would the expanded 12-team playoff potentially be if it was in place this year? Top six-ranked conference champions, six at-large teams, top four conference champs get a bye, higher seeds get the first round games in their home stadiums.

After the first College Football Playoff rankings were released, an expanded playoff would look like this …

Here’s how it’s going to work (this is from the College Football Playoff):

What college football teams are going bowling? Which ones are already out of the race for one of the big exhibitions, and which ones are still in the running but are in for a fight?

Who’ll make it, who won’t, and who’ll have to sweat it out?

Obviously Georgias, Tennessees, and Ohio States of the world are way past just the goal of just playing in a bowl game, but some shockingly big names are in serious trouble of not getting an invite.

A team has to win six games to be bowl eligible. That doesn’t guarantee a spot if there are more eligible teams than spaces, and there’s a way for five-win teams to get in if there aren’t enough available options – we’ll deal with the APR academic side of this later if we have to – but win six games, and there will be a swag bag waiting for you.

By conference, here are the eligible teams, the teams that are out, and the teams that have work to do.

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 9

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 9 of the college football season?

Now there’s a new problem.

Very quickly we go from having too many teams likely to be bowl eligible to potentially not enough.

Texas A&M? That’s not a sure thing. BYU? Probably out unless something big happens. Michigan State? It’s going to take a few upsets to get there. Stanford? Probably not. Texas Tech isn’t a sure thing, and neither is Kansas – the loser of that matchup in a few weeks is likely out.

It’s not time to get into the APR thing among the 5-7 teams quite yet – if you don’t know, don’t ask; we’ll explain later if needed. For now there should be enough teams to fill the spots, so …

College Football Playoff expansion: What would the top 12 project to be if the new format was in place for 2022?

College Football Playoff Expansion Top 12 Projection, 2022 Version After Week 9

The College Football Playoff powers-that-be continue to hem and haw about the minutiae of how to make an expanded version happen, but it’s coming.

There’s too much money on the table to not figure this out for the 2024 season to take this thing to 12.

Again, the basics – 12 teams, top six ranked conference champions, six at large teams, top four conference champs get a bye, and – most likely – the first round will be played at the home parks of the higher seeds.

The full explanation is at the bottom of this, but what if the playoff was expanded for this season? Here’s how it would look at the moment, and as you can see, it’s not as easy as it might seem to get into the top 12.

5. Tennessee (SEC)

10. USC (Pac-12) at
7. Alabama (SEC)

9. Oklahoma State (Big 12) at

[lawrence-related id=553490]

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 8

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 8 of the college football season?

The bowl projections are going to be wild and wacky as we go on with so many moving parts, so many possibilities, and so many teams looking for a home.

With a few big upsets – the Sun Belt and Mountain West went from not looking like they would have enough options to having way too many – there are more teams than ever with a reasonable path to get in.

There are a few shifts in the biggest bowls, and once again we think ESPN will crank up the extra game they put together last season – the Frisco Bowl Classic – to accommodate two of the teams available.

A few likely teams are left off for the moment – Stanford and UNLV might be shakier than it appears – but these can and will all change in a hurry.

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 7

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 7 of the college football season?

Oh did this just get even more interesting.

There will be plenty of upsets on the way, but until then the College Football Playoff picture remains … clear? It’s not what you think, and you’ll see what we’re talking about when we get there.

There are a slew of funky things happening with this week’s bowl projections, and they all have to do with remaining schedules.

Remember, a team needs to get to six wins to become bowl eligible. Michigan State might have just beaten Wisconsin, but it has to win three of its last five games against at Michigan, at Illinois, Rutgers, Indiana, at Penn State. It could happen, but the call is that it’ll lose three of those last five.

Wisconsin? It has been awful at times, but it has an easier finishing kick and should sneak in with three wins in the last five games.

Stanford?! Yeah, remember, it lost to four tough teams – USC, at Washington, at Oregon, Oregon State – but it can beat Arizona State, Washington State, Cal, and BYU to get to six. That might be a stretch, but that’s what the bowl projections are.

Even crazier might be the number of eligible teams. Yup, we’re making the call that ESPN will crank up the Frisco Bowl Classic like it did last year to get that extra TV game on.

So just as second half of the season gets going …
