Is it time to break up Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown?

Or have recent roadbumps brought the ‘split-up-the-jays’ discourse back to life needlessly?

Once, a young, promising duo of Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant seemed like the pair to beat as they propelled the Oklahoma City Thunder to the NBA Finals. But the Thunder could not get over the hump to win it all until Westbrook and Durant were on the rosters of separate ball clubs.

Are the Boston Celtics of today led by star forwards Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown cut from the same cloth as that pair of stars was on their first team in the league? Or can the Celtics find success with some moves around the margins of the team?

For the eponymous host of the “Herd with Colin Cowherd” show, it is time to end the experiment, pointing to the greater success enjoyed by Durant and Westbrook than they had together on the Thunder.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to see if yoy agree with his take.

Times NBA officials ruined games with questionable calls

No Boston Celtics fans (or really, of any team) want officials inserting themselves into the outcomes of games.

Nobody goes to a basketball game hoping the referees will make themselves a major part of how a game plays out. However, fans of the NBA and Boston Celtics can likely think of more than a few such instances in games they have watched this season.

The referee showing has blemished the 2022-23 NBA season in particular, with the league pushing for a greater degree of respect from the players on top of the usual shenanigans that make life difficult for fans of the game.

To such an end, the folks over at the HoopFlix YouTube channel have put together a compilation of those moments for our viewing (dis)pleasure.

Check out the clip embedded above to see an assortment of some of the more egregious examples, including a certain Lakers-Celtics contest that took place this season.

Did the Boston Celtics make a mistake by not waiting to promote Joe Mazzulla to head coach?

Should the Celtics have waited until next season to have made Mazzulla a full head coach? Or did the circumstances require that they give him a multi-year deal given the organization was effectively over a barrel after the Ime Udoka scandal?

Did the Boston Celtics make a mistake by not waiting to promote Joe Mazzulla to head coach?

Not surprisingly, there have been growing pains for the first-year head coach given the lofty ambitions and his relative inexperience. Should the Celtics have waited until next season to make Mazzulla the permanent head coach?

Or did the circumstances require them to give him a multi-year deal given the organization was effectively over a barrel after the Ime Udoka scandal broke at one of the worst possible moments for the organization?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman with Gary Tanguay” podcast debated this topic on an episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to see where the trio comes down on the Mazzulla hire in light of what we have seen from the team in its most high-leverage moments.

Former Texas A&M basketball player Alex Caruso named to NBA All-Defensive First Team

After developing into one of the league’s best perimeter defenders, former Texas A&M star Alex Caruso was named to the NBA’s All-Defensive First Team on Tuesday.

The NBA’s 2022-23 All-Defensive First Team boasts a handful of the league’s best defenders, and one name should catch the eye of the Aggie faithful.

On Tuesday afternoon the NBA announced the full voting results for the league’s All-Defensive teams. Headlining this year’s Kia NBA All-Defensive First Team is former Texas A&M star Alex Caruso, who currently plays for the Chicago Bulls.

Caruso is joined by the Milwaukee Bucks’ Jrue Holiday, Memphis Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr., Bucks center Brook Lopez, and Cleveland Cavaliers big man Evan Mobley.

The former Aggies guard finally notched an All-Defensive team accolade after years of developing into one of the NBA’s premier perimeter defenders. Caruso has averaged at least 1.0 steals per game for five straight seasons, with an average of 1.5 per game this past season with Chicago.

Caruso donned the Maroon and White from 2013-2016, averaging 8.0 points per game, 3.7 rebounds per game, and 4.7 assists per game in 137 games for the Aggies.

In addition to the NBA sharing the results over social media, Texas A&M’s men’s basketball team made sure to show some love to a familiar face as well:

Congrats Alex! It’s always a pleasure to watch you succeed at the NBA level, and this award is arguably long overdue. Gig’Em, and here’s to many more!

Marcus Smart’s best hustle plays with the Boston Celtics from 2022-23

The Flower Mound native was honored for his continuous dedication to giving it his all on the parquet.

Veteran Boston Celtics point guard Marcus Smart won the NBA’s 2022-23 Hustle Award earlier this week, his second consecutive season of being so honored — and the third time he has won the award in a five-year span.

Beating former teammate Aaron Nesmith (now with the Indiana Pacers) among other worthy competitors, the Flower Mound native was honored for his continuous dedication to giving it his all on the parquet, whether diving for loose balls or finding that extra gear on defense in key moments.

To honor Smart’s award this season, fan videographer Tomazs Kordylewski put together a clip of the best hustle plays Smart has unleashed on unwitting opponents in the 2022-23 season so far.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to see it for yourself.

Boston’s Joe Mazzulla just needs to chill out, according to these NBA analysts

Mazzulla’s postgame comportment rubs some the wrong way — even after wins.

By most accounts, Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla is doing a great job at almost every aspect of his job at the helm of the Celtics as he tries to shepherd Boston back to the NBA Finals.

But when it comes to owning some of the mistakes the team makes on the court — or behind his clipboard — the Rhode Island native can be a bit combative with the media.

This not-exactly-hostile bedside manner has encouraged even more speculation and attention from the media than if he had simply acknowledged some of those missteps in the past. Now, he is a topic of conversation for the WEEI “Gresh and Fauria” sports radio talk show because of his postgame comments after Game 2 of the Celtics’ Eastern Conference semifinals series.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to get the gist of their issue with Mazzulla’s words after Boston’s big win on this past Wednesday.

Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart is the winner of the league’s 2022-23 NBA Hustle Award

“Smart showcases hustle in every aspect of the game,” writes the NBA.

Per the NBA, veteran Boston Celtics point guard Marcus Smart is the winner of the league’s 2022-23 NBA Hustle Award, his second such honor in as many seasons and his third such award in the last five seasons. He is the first player in the award’s history to win it back-to-back.

The award was first given to Patrick Beverley, and Amir Johnson, Montrezl Harrell and Thaddeus Young have been the other recipients.

Per NBA.com’s Brian Martin, the NBA Hustle Award “rewards players that make the effort plays that don’t often appear in the traditional box score but impact winning on a nightly basis.”

“Hustle stats — including deflections, loose balls recovered, charges drawn, screen assists, contested shots, and box-outs — have been tracked by the NBA since the 2016 postseason and can be viewed on an individual and team level.”

“Smart showcases hustle in every aspect of the game,” the NBA release added. “The 2021-22 Kia Defensive Player of the Year, Smart doesn’t hesitate to dive on the floor for a loose ball and securing those 50-50 balls are a key component to earning more possessions. Smart finished 14th in loose balls recovered per game this season.”

Best of Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers in the 2022-23 NBA regular season

The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers have played one another a total of four times in the 2022-23 NBA regular season, with the Celtics coming away with a win in three of those four meetings.

The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers have played one another a total of four times in the 2022-23 NBA regular season, with the Celtics coming away with a win in three of those four meetings. The final of the four tilts played by the two Atlantic Division rivals saw the Sixers come away with the win on their own home court.

But it needed 52 points out of star big man Joel Embiid on top of the Celtics missing two of their best players in the game to get the job done. Now, the two ball clubs are slated to face off in the 2023 Eastern Conference semifinals, and Philly may have to start the series without Embiid as the Cameroonian center nurses a sprained knee back to health.

To get an idea of how the series could play out, take a look at the regular season series highlights between the two teams put together by fan videographer Tomek Kordylewski.
