Boston Celtics big man checks in at No. 19 center in the NBA for 2022-23 in new analysis

Boston has seen several of their starters ranked among the best positional trade values in the league.

Deep into the dog days of the 2022 NBA offseason, there is little in the way of current Boston Celtics news to speak of, but plenty of excitement about the 2022-23 season that is less than two months away.

And as we so often do during this part of the league calendar, we bust out a magnifying glass to take long, hard looks at players and the teams they play for. Among the best examples we have seen are being done over at our sister site HoopsHype. Its staff has been ranking players by trade value at their position.

Several Celtics have been ranked by HoopsHype analysts at the point guard, shooting guard and small forward positions. None registered at power forward due to position estimates: Two Boston starters were classified at the center position. Today we will look at the lower-ranked of the two.

Where does Boston Celtics star small forward Jayson Tatum rank at his position?

Just where does the St. Louis native check in the eyes of the HR staff — and more importantly, who’s ranked below and above him?

Once again, we have arrived in the slowest period of the NBA news cycle in the league calendar, the so-called dog days of summer, AKA the doldrums. This is ranking season for analysts of the sport.

You can imagine the vast majority of position ranking lists for players in the 2022-23 season are heavily populated by Boston Celtics, given they are one of the league’s leading contenders in 2023 NBA championship projections.

Some of those Celtics come in pretty high on the lists of some positions, such as star Boston swingman Jayson Tatum in the latest small forward ranking video from the folks at the Hoops Reference YouTube channel.

Just where does the St. Louis native check in the eyes of the HR staff?

Very close to the top of the list, but you will have to watch the clip for yourself to see who Tatum is ranked above — and below.

Celtics projected to narrowly win East in 2022-23 in a tiebreaker over the Milwaukee Bucks

‘The Celtics are now arguably the NBA’s deepest team and should have the ability to withstand the rigors of the 82-game season,’ suggests the ESPN panel.

The Boston Celtics are projected by a panel at ESPN to win the Eastern Conference in the 2022-23 regular season according to a new projection, narrowly beating the Milwaukee Bucks for home-court advantage throughout the postseason.

The Celtics and Bucks were both seen as having a 54-28 record next season, with Boston winning the tie by percentage points. Behind them, in order, are the Miami Heat at 51-31, the Philadelphia 76ers at 50-32, the Toronto Raptors at 47-35 and the Atlanta Hawks at 46-36 to close out the teams who would not have to participate in the league’s play-in tournament in order to secure a postseason berth.

“The Celtics are now arguably the NBA’s deepest team and should have the ability to withstand the rigors of the 82-game season — particularly given stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are only just beginning to enter their respective primes,” writes the panel.

The question of what the roster will look like by opening night aside in the analysis, we are inclined to agree that Boston will have a similar win total if other aspects in the East’s current order remain unchanged.

But, there is still much time for things to change with the Celtics and their opponents both.

Who are the top shooting guards in the NBA heading into the 2022-23 season?

As you might expect, Boston Celtics star wing Jaylen Brown is among the names under consideration.

As is the trend at this time in the NBA calendar cycle so commonly known as the doldrums for its resemblance to the similarly-named part of the sea that never sees movement, analysts start to rank and assess the teams and players of the season to come.

And such is the case with the folks over at the Hoops Reference YouTube channel, who have started ranking the top players in the league by position. In a recent video, they took a deep dive into the best shooting guards in the Association for the 2022-23 season. As you might expect, Boston Celtics star wing Jaylen Brown is among the names under consideration.

But, if you want to know where the Georgia native was ranked by Hoops Reference and why, you will have to watch the clip embedded below for yourself.

Celtics Lab 135: Diving into the seemingly endless combinations of lineups Boston could use in 2022-23

In this episode, we take stock of Boston’s embarrassment of riches when it comes to the players they can put on the floor together.

The Boston Celtics, by most accounts, had one of the better offseasons around the NBA. They added veteran forward Danilo Gallinari and former Indiana Pacers point guard Malcolm Brogdon via free agency and trade, respectively.

That they did so at the cost of only a collection of players who seldom saw the floor in the postseason left the core of the Celtics’ NBA Finals team in tact and in an enviable position. The depth Boston has should not only help the team keep the minutes of their best players down throughout the 2022-23 regular season, but it also provides the team a dizzying array of lineup options to play.

They can play very big, or hold their own with small lineups, able to field adept small and tall ball units equally. A squad built for switchy defense? Check. One built for shooting? Easy. Is the plan to put the opponent in a spin cycle with a mixture of passing and offensive skills? Got it.

Boston Celtics Al Horford expected to sit in back-to-back games throughout season

A big question going into the 2022-23 NBA season will be how the Boston Celtics keep core players fresh for the postseason.

With a new season looming it is time to start looking towards next season. A big question going into the 2022-23 NBA season will be how the Boston Celtics decide to manage their roster with all of the changes. They are one of the deepest teams in the league in the backcourt but in the front court they have some holes and it is expected that Al Horford will sit during back-to-back games.

Heavy Sports NBA insider Steve Bulpett believes that Al Horford will sit out every back-to-back game this season. “You’re not going to see Al in back-to-backs, I’d bet quite a bit on that,” suggests Bulpett.

“I also believe they will limit him when they can. They’re certainly better able to limit minutes in the backcourt, but that’s a situation where they will be looking to find minutes for guys.”

It’s easy to see why resting Horford is crucial especially when the league’s Eastern Conference is so deep at the top of the projected standings.

Several clubs have a real chance to win the East this year and competition will be challenging this coming season for the Celtics. Having everyone healthy and in good shape is going to be crucial to make a run at a championship.

Grading the offseason moves of every team in the NBA’s Eastern Conference

Including, of course, the Boston Celtics.

While we still might see the Brooklyn Nets finally find a trade partner for disgruntled superstar swingman Kevin Durant, or perhaps Danny Ainge could find a new home for star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell somewhere around the league who could be willing to pay the epic haul you know Trader Danny demands.

But for all intents and purposes, the 2022 NBA offseason is over for most of the teams in the Eastern Conference save perhaps for a handful of signings based on how training camp competitions pan out. So one can safely assess how those teams did in their respective offseasons, even if there might still be a few small moves for ball clubs to make around the margins.

The folks over at the Hoops Reference YouTube channel did exactly that in a recent clip and had plenty of good things to say about what the Boston Celtics have managed since being eliminated by the 2022 champion Golden State Warriors in the Finals.

Boston Celtics No. 1 in NBA’s offseason power rankings; No. 2 in The Athletic’s

Let’s take a look at the two assessments of the Celtics,

The Boston Celtics are held in high regard by some of the more popular NBA offseason power rankings out there, checking in from the top spot of the league’s own 2022 offseason power rankings, and just one slot shy of pole position in The Athletic’s offseason power rankings.

The Celtics will return almost all the players who saw postseason minutes in the 2022 NBA Playoffs in a run that saw them fall two wins shy of a championship against the Golden State Warriors and have since added veteran forward Danilo Gallinari in free agency while trading for Indiana Pacers floor general Malcolm Brogdon.

Let’s take a look at the two assessments of the Celtics mentioned above.

Celtics projected to check in as fifth-most expensive team for 2022-23

As far as contenders go, that’s something of a bargain.

The Boston Celtics will almost certainly have one of the NBA’s most expensive payrolls for the 2022-23 season, and they will be a luxury tax paying team as well. In a new article by cap guru Yossi Gozlan on our sister site HoopsHype, the Celtics are projected to have an anticipated payroll of $170.1 million and a tax bill of $45.2 million for a combined $215.3 million

That figure would make them the fifth-most expensive team in the league. Only the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks are projected to have a pricier payroll this season.

As far as contenders go, the Celtics are something of a bargain even if that figure sounds astronomical to most of our budgets.

And with Boston currently the odds-on favorite to win the 2023 NBA title, that is looking more and more like money well spent.

Boston’s Jaylen Brown cracks HoopsHype’s top five shooting guards for 2022-23

The Georgia native has ascended to an elite level in this latest assessment.

Analyst Frank Urbina of our sister site HoopsHype has finished the second of five installments of his annual assessment of the NBA’s best players by position for the coming season, and Boston Celtics star shooting guard Jaylen Brown has landed near the very top of the list of stars at his position.

After a season that saw the Georgia native make it all the way to within two wins of an NBA title with Brown at times the best Celtics player on the floor, it was inevitable that the Cal-Berkeley product would move up in the eyes of NBA writers like Urbina for the 2022-23 season.

In the HoopsHype analyst’s assessment, Brown is nearly without question one of the best players at his position in the world.
