2021 NFL mock draft: 3 QB prospects in top 10, but in what order?

See where Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields and Trey Lance land in this latest 2021 NFL mock draft

We’re still nearly a year away from the 2021 NFL draft, but that hasn’t stopped us from making way-too-early projections for next year’s big offseason event.

The conversation always centers around the top quarterback prospects, and next year’s class promises to deliver plenty in that department. Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, Ohio State’s Justin Fields and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance are all getting preseason hype as potential top-10 picks, and are already battling it out for that No. 1 overall spot.

In the latest 2021 NFL mock draft from Bleacher Report, Lawrence gets the nod at No. 1, heading to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Fields lands in Washington at No. 2 overall, while Lance goes to the Detroit Lions at No. 9 overall.

Lawrence and Fields are expected by most to fight for that top spot, with Lance as the dark-horse challenger coming from the FCS level, similar to what we saw from Carson Wentz when he came out of Fargo. Lawrence saw some regression last season after a stunning freshman campaign, but he’s still the easy pick to go No. 1, unless Fields takes things to another level in 2020.

https://its-always-draft-szn.simplecast.com/episodes/episode-1

Gardner Minshew is entertaining, but his presence shouldn’t keep the Jags from taking a rare prospect like Lawrence if they do indeed land next year’s top pick. Washington would have to be convinced that Dwayne Haskins, the No. 15 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, isn’t worth passing on the next-best quarterback in the 2021 class in order to take Fields at No. 2. Lance in Detroit would be ideal, as the redshirt sophomore would get to sit behind an established veteran in Matthew Stafford for at least one season before having to start.

The only other quarterback to crack this first-round mock is Jamie Newman, who is transferring from Wake Forest to Georgia to take over for Jake Fromm. This projection sends him to New Orleans in the latter part of the round, where he would join what looks like a loaded depth chart for now, with Drew Brees currently listed alongside both Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston.

Day 2 mock draft: Bengals land upgrades around Joe Burrow in Rounds 2-3

Here’s an updated Cincinnati Bengals mock draft for Rounds 2-3 of the 2020 NFL draft.

The Cincinnati Bengals did the obvious with Joe Burrow. Now it’s all about upgrading around him.

The 2020 NFL draft continues Friday, where the Bengals will again hold the top pick. Unfortunately, some top names at positions like linebacker didn’t fall.

Fortunately, other first-round talents did.

Taking a value and need slant, here’s a mock for Rounds 2 and 3.

Round 2 (33): Josh Jones, OT, Houston

Sep 3, 2016; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Cougars offensive lineman Josh Jones (74) during the game against the Oklahoma Sooners at NRG Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Most onlookers would probably agree Josh Jones doesn’t fall to the second round most years. But the 2020 class was oddly strong at tackle, hence six coming off the board in Round 1.

That leaves Jones to the Bengals — and he’s probably the lone reason they shouldn’t trade down.

Jones has left tackle potential but the value with him in Cincinnati is he can probably carve out a long-term role as a starter anywhere, including guard. He’s pro-ready at 6’5″ and 319 pounds.

Lance Zierlein put it best: “Early tape would suggest that Jones is a raw, developmental project in need of substantial technique work, but tape study later in the season suggests a level of improvement that creates additional intrigue for the long, athletic left tackle prospect.”

Lucking into a Round 1-caliber tackle like Jones while still trying to right the longstanding wrongs along the offensive line is as good as it gets.

2020 NFL Draft Round 2

1 (33) Cincinnati

OT Josh Jones, Houston

You’ve got the franchise quarterback with Joe Burrow. Now you have to start protecting him. Expect the Bengals to take either Jones or Boise State’s Ezra Cleveland.

2 (34) Indianapolis (from Washington)

CB Trevon Diggs, Alabama

The Colts finally get a chance to pick, and they have their shot at several corners on the board. Diggs is the best one available, but Utah’s Jaylon Johnson would be a find, too.

3 (35) Detroit

DT Ross Blacklock, TCU

The corner need was filled with a star in Ohio State’s Jeff Okudah. The secondary is helped, and now the Lions need a defensive lineman. Iowa DE AJ Epenesa is better, but Blacklock is the versatile option who’d fill in right away.

4 (36) NY Giants

S Xavier McKinney, Alabama

After reaching for Andrew Thomas with the fourth overall pick – the Georgia tackle is really, really good, but not at that spot – the Giants fall into a phenomenal value get with a quarterback for the secondary.

5 (37) New England (from LA Chargers)

LB Zack Baun, Wisconsin

His stock slid out of the first round after problems with his urine test at the combine, but he’s a great fit for a need spot. The Patriots will go with a tight end a little bit later.

[lawrence-related id=511273]

6 (38) Carolina

DE Yetur Gross-Matos, Penn State

The Panthers have to go Best Defensive Player Available, and they have to keep doing it, even though they took Auburn’s Derrick Brown in the first round. Gross-Matos fills the pass rushing need.

7 (39) Miami

RB Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin

It’ll either be Taylor, D’Andre Swift, or JK Dobbins. The Dolphins desperately need a running back – Jordan Howard isn’t the guy – and their patience is going to pay off after not taking one in the first round.

8 (40) Houston (from Arizona)

DE AJ Epenesa, Iowa

There aren’t a whole lot of picks to play around with, and this is Houston’s first pick in 2020, so it has to count. Getting Epenesa here to boost up a D line that needs a big depth boost would be a fantastic stroke of luck.

9 (41) Cleveland

S Antoine Winfield, Minnesota

Left tackle was figured out with Jedrick Wills with the tenth overall pick, and now they need a linebacker. This isn’t the spot to get one, so they’ll grab the best safety on the board.

10 (42) Jacksonville

OT Ezra Cleveland, Boise State

Going quarterback – Jacob Eason – would be the smart pick, but the Jaguars need offensive linemen … now. The defense got its help on Day One with CB CJ Henderson and edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson, and now Gardner Minshew gets some protection.

2020 NFL mock draft: Final 1st-round projections with trades

Luke Easterling makes his final projections for the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, with a handful of big trades and surprise picks

The wait is nearly over, NFL fans.

In just mere hours, the 2020 NFL Draft will finally kick off, and the strangest predraft process in recent memory will crescendo in (hopefully) a glitch-free virtual experience.

Before the real action gets rolling, here’s my final attempt at projecting how the top 32 picks will shake out, including a handful of trades. This is how I think the first round might unfold, rather than the picks I would make if I had the chance.

Happy draft day, y’all. We made it.

*denotes projected trade

1. Cincinnati Bengals

Joe Burrow | QB | LSU

This has been set in stone for quite some time. No, Burrow never had any problems with the idea of playing for the Bengals, despite whatever rumors may have circulated throughout the draft process.

I also don’t buy the narrative that he can’t be successful in Cincinnati, or that the Bengals have a poor track record with drafting quarterbacks. Carson Palmer was one of the league’s best throughout his tenure in Cincy, and Andy Dalton was effective enough to be worthy of his second-round draft slot. They won the division twice with Palmer at the helm, and made five straight trips to the playoffs with Dalton.

The Bengals have been uncharacteristically aggressive in free agency this year, hoping to build a winner around their eventual franchise quarterback. Burrow is their man, and he’s got all the tools to return this team to playoff contention.

This might not be your normal NFL Draft – at least, it won’t be the new normal, with all the bluster and goofy sideshows – but it’s still going to have its share of craziness, misfires, second-guess selections, and bold moves.

What do we know for certain? Most of the picks on Day Three will be a total waste of time, someone will pass on an obvious-in-hindsight Hall of Fame talent in the first round for a bust, and … we’ll all have a whole lot of fun.

So let’s project a little bit of the silliness. Here are five wacky predictions for the 2020 NFL Draft that will absolutely happen. Maybe. petef@Wib872

5. Washington at the 2, Detroit at the 3, New York Giants at the 4. Two of those three will trade out of their picks.

The three worst things in the entire world are 1) the Disney Family Singalong, 2) people who do what I do in sports media who complain in ANY way about being too in demand during this time of year because they’re SO busy getting to do their super-awesome sports jobs during a global pandemic, and 3) mock drafters who project trades.

You can’t make an NFL draft trade happen, and anyone who says they have inside knowledge from a trusted source are almost always being used in some way to put out misinformation.

You have to play it straight if you’re going to project an NFL draft, knowing full well that there will be trades at some point. With that said …

I’m projecting trades in my 2020 NFL Draft.

CFN in 60 Video: 5 Bold 2020 NFL Draft Predictions …
[jwplayer qKsSftL6]

Two of the three teams that pick immediately after Cincinnati takes Joe Burrow will trade out of their spots.

There’s a chance Washington really does see Ohio State DE Chase Young as the best player in the draft – which he is – and wants to stay put, but then it should go haywire.

Either 1) Miami and/or the Chargers will paranoid up and try moving from their respective spots at the 5 and 6 to make sure they get either Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert, or 2) teams like Jacksonville, who need a quarterback, will give away the farm to cut in line to get one of the two star QB prospects.

Ohio State CB Jeff Okudah is one of the four best prospects in the draft, but Detroit could move down out of the 3 and still be in line for a premium pick. And then there are the Giants.

[lawrence-related id=511116]

There’s absolutely no need whatsoever to take an offensive tackle in this draft at the fourth overall spot.

Tristan Wirfs, Mekhi Becton, Jedrick Wills, Andrew Thomas, Joshua Jones, Isaiah Wilson, Ezra Cleveland, Austin Jackson … they’re all good.

If the Giants like Clemson LB Isaiah Simmons, great. Stay put, take one of the five best prospects in this thing, and that’s the right selection at the right time. But if they’re going with an offensive tackle and they’re not moving down to do it, they’re not doing their job.

Bengals work Joe Burrow-Justin Jefferson LSU chemistry in new 3-round mock

It’s a Joe Burrow and Justin Jefferson reunion for the Cincinnati Bengals in a new 2020 NFL mock draft.

[jwplayer Emo6EFkO-ThvAeFxT]

The Cincinnati Bengals seem guaranteed to take at least one notable LSU prospect in the 2020 NFL draft.

But what if they take two? And back to back? That’s what unfolds in a new mock draft that boasts the Bengals taking Joe Burrow at No. 1 and LSU wideout Justin Jefferson at No. 33 to start the second round.

The idea comes from the final three-round mock at Pro Football Focus, which offers this up for the Burrow pick:

“George Chahrouri: There is zero debate on who the most valuable prospect in this draft class is. Not only is Burrow the best QB, but he is arguably the best overall player regardless of position — making this a no-brainer.”

After, the Bengals take Jefferson at No. 33, then grab Auburn offensive tackle Jack Driscoll in the third round.

But Jefferson is the fun talking point in this one (we’ve talked about Burrow plenty, swear). He caught 111 passes from Burrow last season, going for 1,500-plus yards and 18 touchdowns.

The 6’1″, 202-pound prospect ran a 4.43 40-yard dash at the combine and NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compares him to Greg Jennings, who carved out a lengthy career for himself while being very dependable for multiple big-name passers.

Wideout is a big need for the Bengals this offseason and managing to nail down good value and a player Burrow already has chemistry with seems like a brilliant idea given the chances summer workouts get delayed, if not canceled before the season.

Bengals’ website says Zack Baun is the No. 33 pick in new mock draft

A new mock draft says the Cincinnati Bengals get Zack Baun at No. 33.

[jwplayer Emo6EFkO-ThvAeFxT]

Edge defenders continue to be a big point of speculation for the Cincinnati Bengals at No. 33 in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft.

And the newest — and most notable — mock draft features Wisconsin edge rusher Zack Baun as the pick.

Here’s a blurb of the explanation from Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:

“This is certainly a need pick here. A no-brainer, you’d think.

Yes, in the first 2020 Bengals.com Media Mock Draft before the NFL scouting combine, we went with a SAM backer- type in Alabama’s Terrell Lewis, a Senior Bowler the Bengals coached for the South.”

The line of thinking is simple and could easily be what we see play out late this week. Cincinnati needs to improve its rotational pass rush, needs more versailtiy for its diverse front and could have a first-round grade on Baun.

Baun could slip to the second round in normal circumstances given the strength of the draft class in other areas. But it’s worth noting Baun tested positive for a diluted sample at the combine, which could play a part.

Speaking of the strength of the class, if Baun is the pick at No. 33, there will be plenty of quality wideout targets in the third round if things unfold like this.
