Notre Dame football’s top 5 moments of 2020 season

It didn’t end the way anyone wanted as blowout losses to Clemson and Alabama capped the 2020 Notre Dame football season, but when you go 10-0 in the regular season and secure a spot in the College Football Playoff, it was clearly still a great year for the Fighting Irish.

It didn’t end the way anyone wanted as blowout losses to Clemson and Alabama capped the 2020 Notre Dame football season, but when you go 10-0 in the regular season and secure a spot in the College Football Playoff, it was clearly still a great year for the Fighting Irish.

In a year full of big plays and hard hits that were all played under perhaps the strangest conditions we’ll ever see for college football, there were plenty of great moments to look back on.

What were the five best moments of the year in regards to Notre Dame football though?

Report: Big Ten to reinstate 2020 fall football season with October 17 start date

According to a report from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Big Ten is expected to reinstitute the college football season on October 17th.

[jwplayer wLZ8OZt0]

The saga of the Big Ten football season has been a wild rollercoaster ride, and for fans who were hoping on seeing some Michigan State football this fall, it looks like you are going to get your wish.

Yesterday, the Big Ten’s medical subcommittee presented options to reinstitute the fall football season after new COVID-19 rapid-response testing has become available to the conference. According to a report from Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, that presentation will lead to an official restart date for the Big Ten football season of October 17th.

The Big Ten had originally voted to postpone the fall season back in August, and for a while, it looked like things wouldn’t start back up for the conference until 2021. However, this news related to the new testing methods is huge and, for the first time in a month, it looks like there is some major hope to see some MSU football soon.

Ed Orgeron: There isn’t a ‘Plan B’ for LSU

What’s left of the potential for a 2020 college football season became even bleaker on Tuesday.

What’s left of the potential for a 2020 college football season became even bleaker on Tuesday, when the Big Ten announced it would not be playing this year and reports emerged that the PAC-12 would follow suit.

For now, the SEC football season is still on, and Tigers coach Ed Orgeron has his eyes on “moving forward” with his team after guiding last year’s group to a national championship victory.

He says that there is no “Plan B” in place.

“Our players want to play, I do believe the SEC wants to play,” Orgeron said Tuesday. “I do have to give it to our commissioner for waiting to get the most information and making the correct decision for our football team and I do believe he will make that.”

[lawrence-related id=9969]

There have been a number of voices around the SEC and beyond that have been outspoken about wanting the college football season to be played outside of just Orgeron — and it’s a lengthy list that goes all the way up to Donald Trump.

Trump praised Orgeron this week in an interview with Outkick, when he spoke on the football season.

“First of all, those people in that sport are incredible people,” he said. “Some of the coaches like Nick Saban and Coach O (Ed Orgeron), how bout Coach O, he’s central casting. And Lou Holtz is a fantastic friend of mine. So many others. They’re just great people and they want to play football. These people are so powerful and so strong and not lots of body fat, maybe none in some cases and they’re very healthy people. People don’t realize it’s a tiny percentage of people who get sick. They’re old. Especially old people with heart and weight problems.”

“I love President Trump, he treated us very well when we went to the White House and I think he’s doing a fantastic job,” Orgeron said in response.

LSU is currently set to begin the season on Sept. 26 against the Ole Miss Rebels in Tiger Stadium.

Report: ‘vast majority’ of Big Ten presidents ready to call off 2020 football season

Will the Big Ten be the first domino to fall?

On Sunday, the Power 5 conference commissioners held an “emergency meeting,” according to a report from ESPN.

The outlook on the future of the 2020 college football season for the Southeastern Conference and beyond seems to have only gotten darker by the day, but now it looks plainly grim.

According to the ESPN report, “a vast majority” of Big Ten presidents are ready to call off the fall sports season, possibly prepared to move college football to the spring.

Per the report, the Big Ten went into the meeting seeking to “gauge if commissioners and university presidents and chancellors from the other Power 5 conferences will fall in line with them.”

[lawrence-related id=9830]

Headlines surrounding just how ready those in charge are ready to pull the plug and call off fall football have been all over the place in recent days, with one Power 5 athletic director calling the cancellation of the football season ‘inevitable.’

The pressure is on, and now it seems to be a waiting game of who will cancel first — and who will be the last domino to fall.

Of course, the SEC could absolutely still choose to play out the season on a conference-only schedule regardless of what some others may do, but it will be interesting to see how a situation that appears to be darkening continues to play out.

For now, LSU is expected to begin its season on Sept. 26 against the Ole Miss Rebels in Tiger Stadium.

Rumor: Big Ten Conference to cancel College Football this Fall

According to multiple reports, the Big Ten Conference is heavily leaning towards canceling the college football season this fall.

[jwplayer FN7IWpf5]

If there is one word I think we are all getting sick of hearing, it’s ‘uncertainty.’ Well, it looks like some uncertainty surrounding this upcoming college football season might become a real certainty tomorrow, as rumors have swirled Sunday evening that the Big Ten Conference will be canceling the Fall College Football season this week.

According to numerous reports, the Presidents and Chancellors of all the Big Ten Conference schools met tonight along with the Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren to discuss this upcoming season, and according to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, the prevailing sentiment on the call was to cancel the fall season.

Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio also posted a similar report. According to his sources, the Big Ten will most likely be announcing the cancellation of College Football in the Fall on Monday:

While I also have some concerns about pushing the season to the spring and making college players play both a spring and fall season next year, the most immediate need will be to keep players healthy this fall and this seems like a logical way to do that.

Two more Michigan State Football players opt out of 2020 season

Marcel Lewis and Justin Stevens have opted out of the 2020 Michigan State Football season.

[jwplayer FN7IWpf5]

I am not sure if everyone knew this, but we are in the middle of a pandemic folks. While Michigan State Football started practice on Friday to gear up for the 2020 fall football season, not every player has felt comfortable participating. Recently, offensive lineman Jordan Reid and defensive lineman Jacub Panasiuk opted out of the upcoming season. Today, we found out that two more Spartans will be following suit and opting out of the 2020 season.

These players are true freshman offensive tackle Justin Stevens and sophomore outside linebacker Marcel Lewis. Stevens is a 3-star recruit out of Mississauga, Ontario in Canada and Lewis is a former 3-star recruit from Chippewa Valley High School in Clinton Township, Michigan.

Both players released statements explaining their positions and reasoning for opting out, which you can read below.

Here is Stevens’ statement:

Here is Lewis’ statement:

While I think we are all looking forward to a potential football season, it is beyond reasonable for college student-athletes to opt-out of a season if they are concerned about their long-term health.

Fans will not be allowed to attend Oklahoma at Army with New York order

OU is currently scheduled to travel to West Point, NY, in week four to face Army. But the teams will be playing in an empty stadium.

With college football in 2020 still hanging in the balance, OU’s season has already taken a significant hit.

OU is currently scheduled to travel to West Point, NY, in week four to face Army. Should that game happen, the teams will be playing in an empty stadium.

On Tuesday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo banned fans from attending any sporting events in New York.

Of course, this ruling will only come into effect if the game is actually played. With the Big Ten and Pac-12 recently switching to a conference-only format for the 2020 season, that is no guarantee.

Here’s a look into what a Big-12 only schedule could look like for OU.

This game is particularly challenging because there are no airports in West Point. OU was likely planning to fly into JFK or LaGuardia before traveling to West Point via ground.

New York has received 5,072 new cases in the last seven days. That mark is only slightly higher than Oklahoma’s count of 4,688.

Cuomo also announced on Tuesday that travelers from 31 different states, including Oklahoma, must quarantine for 14 days before entering New York.

Oklahoma’s matchup with Army is the second half a home-and-home which began with a game in Norman in 2018.

Big Ten reportedly considering 10-game, conference-only schedule for 2020 football season

The Big Ten will reportedly consider changing to a 10-game, conference only football schedule due to COVID-19 concerns.

[jwplayer h3HLhWW4]

Big changes could be on the way for the 2020 college football schedule. According to reports, the Big Ten is considering changing its football schedule for the 2020 season to a 10-game, conference-only schedule for the upcoming football season.

The news was first posted to social media by Inside NU (coincidentally, MSU is currently scheduled to start the season against Northwestern) who gave credit to Tom Dienhart of GoldandBlack.com.

This news came the same afternoon that we also heard that Ohio State will be pausing voluntary workouts due to an unreported number of positive COVID-19 test results in the last round of testing.

The Spartans currently have three non-conference match-ups for the 2020 season against BYU, Miami (Florida), and Toledo.

Michigan State Football slight underdogs against Northwestern in early Week One betting odds

Michigan State Football will be slight underdogs at home against Northwestern in week one of the 2020 college football season.

[jwplayer 7LCHev4s]

It goes without saying that there are still quite a few question marks surrounding the start date of the college football season, but as of right now, the Michigan State Football team is scheduled to host Northwestern on September 5th in Spartan Stadium, and that means it is officially betting odds season once again! In the first betting odds of the 2020 season, which were posted by Circa Sports, the Spartans are slight underdogs against Northwestern at home and listed at +1.

The odds were first posted, from what I saw, by Circa Sports:

Since MSU is at home, this is probably one of the more surprising opening week odds and I have already seen some people voicing their surprise at this, but it’s not entirely too surprising. Many are expecting this to be a 4 or 5 win football season while new head coach Mel Tucker rebuilds the roster. That remains to be seen, but given that this is the preeminent sentiment surrounding the team, I’m not surprised that Vegas is favoring Northwestern.
