Who had the most bad wins over the last five years? The conference rankings of the teams with the most – and least – wins over the bad teams in the last five college football seasons.

Contact @PeteFiutak

They’re the fluff.

They’re the games that teams are supposed to win, they’re they ones that pad the final records, and they’re the games you HAVE to put away.

They’re the bad wins – wins over the easy teams on the slate. They might get ignored as the college football seasons go on, but they can be the difference between a winning and losing campaign, or they could be the reason why a team gets to go bowling.

What does this generally mean? The more Bad Wins means the easier the schedule and path to come up with a good year.

What’s a Bad Win? It’s a victory over 1) an FCS team or 2) an FBS team that finished its season with three wins or fewer.

By conference, which teams came up with the most clunkers over the last five years?

They’re the season-cripplers.

The bad losses can ruin a campaign, crush momentum, and kill a team hoping to come up with a win against someone it’s probably supposed to beat.

So what’s a Bad Loss?

In the CFN Five-Year Program Analysis, a Bad Loss is counted as a loss to an FCS team or to a team that finishes with three wins or fewer. An extra 0.5 penalty is added on to a Bad Loss at home – those really hurt.

You do NOT want to be ranked high on this.

Again, these are losses to FCS teams or teams that finished with three wins or fewer. It’s a BAD thing to be high on the list – the lower the score, the better.

By conference, which teams came up with the most clunkers over the last five years?

CFN 5-Year Program Analysis: 0 Bad Losses

Losses to teams that finished with three losses or fewer or FCS programs. An extra 0.5 added to a Bad Loss at home.

Out of all 130 FBS college football teams, how do they rank when they have to crank up the conference action?

For the independents – like Notre Dame, BYU and Army – the overall record is counted like a conference record.

The league championship games aren’t a part of this – regular season conference records only – with the winning percentage the element of the Five-Year Program Analysis.

Of course everyone wants to win the big national games, but to a whole lot of fans, winning the conference games on a weekly basis means even more.

How good have the teams been when league play gets going? Come up with a good conference season, and the world is okay. Struggle against the familiar family members, and there’s a problem.

For the independents – like Notre Dame, BYU and Army – the overall record is counted like a conference record.

Beyond wins and losses, attendance might be the most important factor in a program’s success. Put butts in the seats, support the non-revenue sports. When the stands have empty sections, athletic directors get fired – especially at the power program schools.

Below are the rankings of all 130 college football programs based on their five-year attendance averages, including how full the stadiums are.

Basically, for the teams at the top of the list, there are no excuses when it comes to revenue and infrastructure. Attendance – and the revenue that comes from it – is why these schools usually have the major football programs.

With the 2020 college football season a question mark in so many ways, this is a massive factor for athletic directors to deal with. Not finishing up the spring and winter sports hurt, but don’t have fans in the football stands – or if games get cancelled or postponed – and there’s a huge problem.

ESPN’s FPI ranks Georgia, LSU football lower than expected

The Georgia Bulldogs made the FPI’s preseason top ten once again, but the Dawgs and Tigers are rated too lowly by ESPN’s FPI.

The Georgia Bulldogs made the FPI’s preseason top ten once again. The Dawgs check in tenth in the rankings. LSU comes in at twelfth. Here’s a description of ESPN’s FPI:

The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily.

Here’s the rankings of the top 25 SEC teams:

Should Georgia be ranked higher? I think so. The Dawgs return so many studs on defense that they deserve to be a few spots higher than Texas and Texas A&M.

Both Georgia and LSU should be ranked above Texas A&M. It’s rare to take the side of the Tigers, but they’re defending national champions and return lots of talent.

FPI, to put it simply, is not an extremely accurate measure of the college football universe. For instance, who was first in FPI after last season? You’d think 15-0 LSU would be, but they’re third behind first-rated Ohio State and second-rated Clemson.

In last season’s preseason FPI rankings, Georgia was rated third. It did correctly pick two of the four playoff teams (LSU and Clemson), but it missed on numerous teams like Michigan (5th), UCLA (20th), Tennessee (15th), and South Carolina (18th).

Notre Dame’s Highest “Top Early Top 25” Ranking We’ve Seen

The Irish also come in one spot behind Florida who is fresh-off an Orange Bowl victory and 11-2 season.

We tend to react when national college voices weigh in on Notre Dame gets mentioned, whether it’s good or bad.

This week you’ve seen us post a few different “Too Early Top 25” rankings that various college football writers have offered.  We reacted to one by considering firing it into the sun while the other we dissected, we pretty much fell in line with.

Now we have one that has ranked Notre Dame higher than any we’ve seen this week.

From Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde:

9. Notre Dame

There are two attractive but difficult additions to the schedule: Clemson at home and Wisconsin at Lambeau Field. Those are in addition to games at USC and Pittsburgh. But with Ian Book and most of the offensive line returning, Brian Kelly has some building blocks. There are a lot of good players to replace on defense. The recruiting consistency of the Fighting Irish will come into play there.

Notre Dame coming in at nine placed them a spot ahead of national champion LSU which may come as a shock to some.  The Irish also come in one spot behind Florida who is fresh-off an Orange Bowl victory and 11-2 season.

Three 2020 Notre Dame opponents show up on the list with Clemson being top-rated in the nation and Wisconsin checking in at 13 and USC at 16.  Simple logic leads you to understand why the November 7 showdown with Clemson could very easily be the biggest game at Notre Dame Stadium since The Game of the Century versus Florida State in 1993.

Notre Dame Top 10 in ESPN’s “Way Too Early Top 25 Poll”

Today ESPN released their same list and the Irish were shown significantly more respect by writer Mark Schlabach who has Notre Dame at number 10.

Welcome to one of the worst sports-days of the year.

College football concluded for the season last night and now we have to wait until the end of August to recap actual games and live and die with every first down, touchdown and coaches decision we agree with or hate.

With that however, the nation is putting out their “Way Too Early Top 25” polls for the 2020 season, before we even know who is staying in school and who all is entering the NFL Draft.

Yesterday we reacted to Brett McMurphy of Stadium who had Notre Dame ranked laughably low.

Today ESPN released their same list and the Irish were shown significantly more respect by writer Mark Schlabach who has Notre Dame at number 10.

Outlook: After suffering early losses at Georgia and Michigan, the Irish were never serious contenders for a CFP spot this past season. They still won 11 games and blasted Iowa State 33-9 in the Camping World Bowl. With quarterback Ian Book and all five starting offensive linemen returning, the Irish have a good nucleus coming back on offense. But they must replace leading receivers Claypool and Finke, leading rusher Jones and Kmet, who was a matchup nightmare. Northwestern graduate transfer Bennett Skowronek and incoming four-star receiver Jordan Johnson might be able to help right away. Brian Kelly is also looking for a new offensive coordinator after Chip Long was pushed out. It might be former quarterback Tom Rees, who called plays in the bowl game. The Irish will also have to replace all four starters in the secondary after Gilman decided to bypass his fourth season. Notre Dame plays Wisconsin at Lambeau Field and hosts Clemson, but it might be favored in its 10 other regular-season games.

That’s how Schlabach looks at Notre Dame in 2020.

For the record he has Clemson, Ohio State, Alabama and LSU as his top-four.

No. 1 Clemson and No. 14 Wisconsin are the only two Notre Dame opponents for 2020 who can be found in this particular top-25.
