Due to injuries and countless roster moves, the Jets have had to scrap the bottom of the barrel for players this season.

The Jets are tied with the Dolphins for the league lead in players used this season with 68. The Jets also have $48 million worth of salary cap on injured reserve, which is more than double 26 NFL teams, according to the team’s former GM, Mike Tannenbaum. Currently, the Jets have 14 players on injured reserve.

New York has been plagued by injuries all season long. If you look at the first depth chart that came out at the beginning of the season, you’ll notice a lot of missing names on the current roster.

The positions that the Jets have been hit the worst at are cornerback, inside linebacker and offensive line. The Jets have lost their top two cornerbacks in Trumaine Johnson and Darryl Roberts. They’ve also lost five inside linebackers for at least one game this season. On the offensive line, the Jets have used six different line combinations and four of the starting offensive linemen from Week 1 are either hurt or on the bench.

With all the injuries, the Jets have had to add a bunch of players to fulfill the 53-man roster requirement. The Jets have 16 players who weren’t on the initial 53-man roster back in September.

Even heading into Sunday’s game against the Redskins, the Jets had 23 players listed on the injury report. Say what you want about this team, but when you have this many injuries it’s not hard to see why the Jets are 3-7 on the season.

Adam Gase mum when asked why Ryan Kalil landed on injured reserve

Adam Gase doesn’t say much when asked why Ryan Kalil was placed on injured reserve.

It was originally thought that Ryan Kalil would be back this season. Then the team placed him on injured reserve.

Kalil was placed on IR with a knee injury ahead of the Jets’ game with the Redskins on Sunday. However, on Friday, Adam Gase sounded pretty confident that Kalil would return this season and ensured reporters that he didn’t suffer any setbacks.

When asked about the change of plans and IR decision on Monday, Gase didn’t have much to say.

“That was just a decision that was made,” he said. “I don’t really have any further details on that.”

It seems like the Jets had seen enough of Kalil. He clearly wasn’t what the Jets expected when they signed him back in July. With a late start in training camp and him missing every preseason game, Kalil was never able to gel with his fellow linemen.

All in all, the Jets paid him $6.7 million for seven games.

As for his replacement, Jonotthan Harrison has slid back into the starting role quite nicely. The offensive line play has picked up over the last couple games and Gase is liking what he sees from Harrison.

“Jonotthan’s done well the last couple of games,” Gase said. “Really it’s just picking up where he left off. His knowledge of the offense is greater than what it was when we first started in the spring. He’s done a good job of playing fast and his communication has been outstanding.”

For Harrison, this is his chance to prove that he can be the starting center going forward. He’s under contract for one more season but has no guaranteed money left. Joe Douglas has already tried to move on from him once by bringing in Kalil, so it will interesting to see what Douglas will do with Harrison in the offseason.

Jets injury report: Kelvin Beachum injures ankle again

Jets offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum re-injured his ankle on Sunday against the Redskins.

The Jets offensive line took a couple of hits at both tackle positions this week.

Adam Gase spoke to the media on Monday and said that offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum hurt his ankle again after suffering an injury a few weeks ago. However, Gase said it’s different from his last injury and there’s a chance Beachum can practice this week in preparation for the Raiders.

As for Chuma Edoga, he had an MRI on what is being described as a knee/ankle injury. Gase is optimistic about him playing on Sunday as well.

Other than that, the Jets came out injury-free from Sunday’s win over the Redskins.

Sam Darnold is Jets Wire’s Player of the Game vs. Redskins

Sam Darnold led the way for the Jets as they got their third win of the season with a 34-17 win over the Washington Redskins.

Sam Darnold led the way for the Jets in their third win of the season Sunday,  a 34-17 road victory over the Washington Redskins.

Darnold had his best game of the season, setting a career-high in touchdown passes with four. For his performance, Darnold is Jets Wire’s Player of the Game for Week 11 of the regular season.

Going along with Darnold’s four touchdown passes, he was 19-30 for 293 yards. Other than one forced interception, Darnold played solid football. He was making magic out of the pocket with off-schedule plays and looked comfortable when in standing tall.

Darnold also did a good job of spreading the love with the football. Seven different Jets receivers had at least one reception in the game. That shows that Darnold is going through his reads and not staring down one receiver.

Darnold has enjoyed great chemistry with tight end Ryan Griffin. Darnold made him look like the second coming of Rob Gronkowski, as he had five catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. Overall, Jets tight ends had six catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

The only concern with Darnold is that he’s still trying to make plays when nothing is there, resulting in turnovers. Darnold’s interception came on a double screen in which neither option was open and he tried to force the ball in. He has to do a better job of getting rid of the football and not putting it up for grabs.

But other than that, the last two games have been strong for Darnold and he seems to be getting back on track. All the Jets can hope for is that he continues to develop in Adam Gase’s system and cuts down on the turnovers.

Jets vs. Redskins: Game info, where to watch, notes

Here’s everything you need for the Jets’ matchup with the Redskins.

The New York Jets will look to notch consecutive wins for the first time all season when they visit the Washington Redskins.

The Jets have eight players listed as questionable this week, but there’s a good chance that all of them play. The only player that is doubtful is Darryl Roberts. Ryan Kalil, Paul Worrilow, C.J. Mosley and Mathias Farley have all been ruled out.

If the Jets are going to get a win this week, their offense needs to have a similar performance as it did against the Giants. Sam Darnold has to play turnover-free football and continue with the short passing game. That got him into a rhythm last week and it allowed him to take more shots down the field.

The only thing the Jets offense would like to improve upon from last week is the running game. Le’Veon Bell has yet to have a breakout game and the Redskins are at the bottom of the league in stopping the run. So this is a golden opportunity for Bell to kick start his season.

As for the defense, they need to do whatever they can to confuse Redskins rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Gregg Williams has to disguise some packages that force Haskins to make mistakes. He hasn’t played in many games this season and he is vulnerable to turnovers.

The Redskins are riding a three-game losing streak and are currently 1-8 on the year. They are looking ahead to 2020 and are trying to develop a rookie quarterback in the process, so they don’t really have much to play for.

As for watching the game, here’s everything you need to know:

Jets OT Kelvin Beachum named Week 10 NFLPA Community MVP

Kelvin Beachum was named the Week 10 NFLPA Community MVP.

Jets offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum continues to do his part in helping out his community.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Beachum was named the Week 10 NFLPA Community MVP for donating $10,000 to the United Way of Greater Newark and also setting up a drive that generated 26,000 bottles of clean water for residents in need. He personally delivered many of them.

Beachum has always been one of the best in the league when it comes to giving back to the community. Last season, he was nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. He has worked with organizations that want to create technology-related solutions to ending world hunger and provide clean water for everyone around the world.

When Beachum was with the Steelers, he would often bring meals from their practice facility and give it to the homeless.

Beachum has always prided himself on his charitable works and feels it’s important to try and make a difference in the world. So while the Jets may not be doing great on the football field, they can always count on Beachum to do the right thing in the community.

Jets nominate Steve McLendon for Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

New York has decided to nominate defensive lineman Steve McLendon as their team representative.

The Jets found a real diamond in the rough when they lured Steve McLendon from the Steelers. Ever since, McLendon has been a defensive anchor for New York but, more importantly, a leader.

This year, his efforts as a leader are being noticed.

Every season the National Football League recognizes one player for their conduct on the field. This individual is selected as the recipient of the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. New York has decided to nominate McLendon as their team representative.

The honor is named after the founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Art Rooney. Rooney is also a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

To become a finalist, a panel of former players from the NFL Legends Community narrows the field. Each team nominates one player, thus leaving 32 athletes for the panel to consider. They narrow the nominees to eight and leave the rest to current NFL players.

The award is decided by a vote among players. Alongside the honor, the NFL Foundation grants a $25,000 donation to a charity of the player’s choosing.

Past winners, from most recent, include Drew Brees, Luke Kuechly, Frank Gore, Charles Woodson and Larry Fitzgerald.

Adam Gase grateful for Jets CEO Christopher Johnson’s support

Jets HC Adam is glad that Christopher Johnson assured him that his job is safe for 2020.

Jets head coach Adam Gase was naturally pleased with what CEO Christopher Johnson had to say about him on Wednesday.

Johnson said that the Jets will not make a head coaching change before or after this season, meaning Gase will be the coach in 2020. While Gase has never worried about his job security, it was still refreshing for the head coach to hear that his boss has confidence in him going forward.

“To get his support, and for him to see what we’re trying to do, that’s an important step for us,” Gase told reporters.

Johnson told the rest of the team the news before the game against the Giants. The news was well-received.

“If everything works out how it’s supposed to and Adam’s here again, that would be absolutely amazing,” Sam Darnold said. “I think most of the guys on the team, if not the whole team, already had that much confidence in Coach Gase.”

When a coach’s job status is brought into question, it could cause players to be distracted from doing their job on the field. However, Gase hasn’t noticed that in this locker room.

“Nobody in this building, but I can’t speak for the outside,” Gase said. “I’m closed in a little bit.”

People on the outside have certainly called for Gase to be fired. Last week, a group of Jets fans organized for a plane to be flown over New York City that carried a banner that read “Fire Adam Gase!” After the Jets lost to the Dolphins, fans could be heard chanting for the coach to be fired.

That’s not going to happen though, at least not any time soon.

Jets sign OL Ben Braden to practice squad

After elevating Kyron Brown from the practice squad, the Jets had a spot to fill.

The team announced on Wednesday that they signed offensive lineman Ben Braden to the practice squad.

Braden was signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan in 2017. He didn’t make the initial 53-man roster in 2017, but was signed to the practice squad. The Jets then signed him to a future/reserve contract in January 2018.

In 2018, Braden made the 53-man roster, but was waived shortly after that and then re-signed to the practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster at the end of November. In 2019, Braden was back on the practice squad before being waived in September. Braden was signed to the Packers practice squad a couple days later and was waived last week.

Jets to have representative at Colin Kaepernick’s workout

The Jets will have a representative at Colin Kaepernick’s private workout.

[jwplayer 1vROLFUW-ThvAeFxT]

With the Jets backup quarterback situation in question for next season, they will take a look at Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick is participating in a private workout in Atlanta on Saturday for all 32 teams. The Jets will send a representative to watch Kaepernick’s workout, according to ESPN. The event will include an on-field workout followed by an interview.

On Wednesday, Jets head coach Adam Gase was asked about Kaepernick’s upcoming workout, but he declined to discuss the quarterback.

“I got to worry about this week,” Gase told reporters. “That’s what my job is. That’s a question for personnel guys.”

The last time Kaepernick played in the NFL was in 2016 with the 49ers. It was in San Francisco that he began to protest racial and social injustice, kneeling during the national anthem. Before that, he led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2012 and made the NFC Championship in 2013. After that, his production started to dip.

Many believe Kaepernick has been blacklisted by the NFL for his kneeling protests that began in 2016. After being released by the 49ers in 2016, Kaepernick filed a grievance against the NFL in 2017. He and the NFL reached a confidential settlement in 2019.

The Jets could use a backup quarterback, but it remains to be seen how real of a shot they or any other team will give Kaepernick.
