Jets vs. Bills: Game info, where to watch, notes

Here’s everything you need to know for the Jets’ season finale with the Bills.

The Jets will look to close their season out on a high note when they take on the Bills on Sunday.

These two teams last faced off in Week 1. The Jets jumped out in front early, but blew a 16-point lead and fell by a final score of 17-16. A lot has changed since then, as the Jets have been hampered by injuries and are not heading to the playoffs, while the Bills have clinched the No. 5 seed in the AFC.

If the Jets are going to secure their seventh win of the year, they’ll have to take advantage of the Bills backups. With Buffalo locked into the No. 5 seed, Sean McDermott won’t play his starters too long. When the backups come in the Jets will have to pounce on them.

The Jets will still have to do their part in spite of the Bills’ backups. They still need to go out and play a clean football game by not turning over the football and playing smart defensively. Given everything that has happened to the Jets this season, seven wins would be a step in the right direction for this team.

Jets place Tom Compton on IR, sign Ben Braden to active roster

The Jets have placed Tom Compton on injured reserve and signed Ben Braden to the active roster.

Another New York Jet has landed on injured reserve.

The team announced on Saturday that it has placed offensive lineman Tom Compton on injured reserve with a calf injury. In a corresponding move, the Jets signed offensive lineman Ben Braden to the active roster.

Compton started five games this season at guard for the injured Brian Winters. The Jets signed him in the offseason after he spent the 2018 season with the Vikings.

As for Braden, he has been with the Jets practice squad since November after spending time on the Packers practice squad. Braden was originally signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan in 2017. He was on the practice squad for all of 2017 before appearing in two games in 2018.

Jets DC Gregg Williams isn’t looking to leave New York this offseason

Gregg Williams is loving his time with the Jets and doesn’t want to leave the team for a head-coaching opportunity elsewhere.

Gregg Williams has made it clear that New York is where he wants to be.

Williams spoke to reporters on Friday and was asked if he would be interested in a head-coaching job if the opportunity presented itself this offseason. However, Williams stated that he is perfectly comfortable in his position as the Jets’ defensive coordinator.

“I love it here,” Williams said.

Williams has done a superb job with New York’s defense this season. His unit has been depleted by injuries beginning with the loss of starting inside linebacker Avery Williamson in August, but is still one of the better defenses in the league. New York is 19th in points allowed per game, seventh in total yards allowed, 15th in pass defense and second in run defense.

Williams has plenty of head coaching experience. Last season, he was the interim head coach for the Browns and was in the running to be the full-time coach before Cleveland decided to go with Freddie Kitchens. He also was the Bills head coach from 2001 to 2003.

Williams has latched onto the players he has spent coaching in 2019. The feeling is mutual, as all of the players love Williams’ competitive spirit and his ability to get the most out of his players.

Not much has gone right for the Jets in 2019, but the job done Williams has done with the defense stands out as one of the few bright spots. Adam Gase and company should feel fortunate that the veteran defensive play-caller has no desire to seek greener pastures.

Jets RB Le’Veon Bell not happy with another NFL drug test

Le’Veon Bell is not happy with having to take another HGH blood test.

Le’Veon Bell is at war with the NFL drug testing program once again.

After vowing not to take any more drug tests back in November, Bell is facing another HGH blood test ahead of the Jets’ Week 17 matchup with the Buffalo Bills. Bell received a note in his locker on Friday that stated he was being subjected to complete a doping test immediately — something he did not take too kindly to.

It is unknown whether or not Bell took his HGH blood test. He spoke to reporters on Friday, but it seemed like he stuck to his word from a month ago.

“I said what I said last time & we’ll take it from there & cross that bridge when we’ve got to cross it,” Bell said.

Bell has been tested five times this season and under the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, players can be tested a maximum of six times in a season. However, these tests are supposed to be random. It seems to be anything but random for Bell, who has passed every single one of his tests.

“I feel like they’re trying to clone me or something,” Bell said.

The 27-year-old running back has had a history with banned substances before. In 2014, he was suspended two games after being charged with marijuana possession and DUI. Meanwhile, in 2016 he was suspended four games for missing a drug test.

If Bell doesn’t take the latest league-issued test, he could be subject to suspension.

Jets injury report: Alex Lewis, Tom Compton ruled out vs. Bills

Alex Lewis and Tom Compton have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Bills.

The Jets will go with yet another offensive line combination when they take on the Bills in Week 17.

Both Alex Lewis (ankle) and Tom Compton (calf) have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against Buffalo. That means Brent Qvale and Conor McDermott will get the start at both guard positions.

This will be the Jets’ ninth different offensive line combination they’ve used this year. Qvale is the 11th offensive lineman to start for New York in 2019.

Jamal Adams (ankle), Henry Anderson (ankle/shoulder), Robby Anderson (calf), Kelvin Beachum (back/ankles), Kenneth Dixon (illness), Brian Poole (ankle), Steve McLendon (knee/hip) and Demaryius Thomas (hamstring/knee) are all listed as questionable. The expectation is that all of those players will be able to suit up.

Jets are underdogs in season finale against Bills

The Jets are -1.5 underdogs against the Bills in the season finale.

The hope for the New York Jets was to play meaningful games in the month of December, but that will not be the case on Sunday against the Bills.

The Jets have been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention for a few weeks now. As for the Bills, they’ll be playing football in January, but they are locked into the No. 5 seed in the AFC. Essentially, this game means nothing for either team.

New York is listed as a a 1.5-point underdog against the Bills, according to BetMGM. Meanwhile, the Jets are -106 against the spread and +110 in the money line on the road.

Buffalo is -1.5-point favorites and are -115 against the spread. They are -134 in the money line.

The over/under is set at 36.5 with the over at -106 and the under at -115. The last time these teams met back in Week 1 they combined for 33 total points.

The tricky part with picking this game is that you don’t know how long the Bills will keep their starters in the game. Sean McDermott has already said the starters will play in the game, but the backups are expected to see some action too.

The Jets will have everyone who is healthy as they look to even up the season series after falling in the first game at MetLife Stadium.

Jamal Adams: Jets ‘hunting’ for win over Bills in Week 17

Jamal Adams says the Jets will be hunting for a win on Sunday against the Bills.

The Jets will be out for revenge when they travel to Buffalo to take on the Bills in Week 17.

The last time the Jets played the Bills, they coughed up a 16-point lead and ended up losing 17-16. This game has no meaning for either team with New York eliminated from playoff contention and Buffalo locked into the No. 5 seed in the AFC. However, the Jets are using their season-opening loss as motivation to end the regular season on a high note.

“Yeah, we coming after them,” Jamal Adams said on Tuesday. “We hunting. At the end of the day, this is a playoff game for us. We hear they’re going to start their starters. That’s good. We’re looking forward to the matchup, I can tell you that.”

The Bills have already stated that their starters will take the field on Sunday, but head coach Sean McDermott didn’t specify how long they will play. Backup quarterback Matt Barkley will see some playing time, which indicates that McDermott will switch over to the backups at some point.

After a dismal 1-7 start, the Jets have a chance to finish 6-2 in their last eight games. That bodes well for next season given the numerous injuries that hampered New York throughout 2019 and gives Gang Green something to build on heading into the new year.

“It’s important, man,” Adams said. “It’s all about finishing. That’s our goal. We’re treating this game as a playoff game. … This is the mindset going into it. We’re excited they’re playing their starters, I can tell you that, and we’re going to be out there hunting, man.”

Jamal Adams, Sam Darnold think Jets are ‘not that far away’ from contending

Jamal Adams and Sam Darnold don’t think the Jets are that far away.

The Jets are riding high following their sixth win of the season over the Steelers on Sunday.

Six wins are the most the Jets have had since 2015 when they won 10 games, but failed to reach the playoffs. New York has won five of its last seven games after starting the season 1-7.

At this point of the year, players are looking at any success as a glimpse of hope for the future. Jamal Adams is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“We’re not that far away, man, we’re really not,” Adams said. “I want people to understand that. It might seem like it is, but we have to put our head down and keep grinding.”

Every team wants to have some momentum heading into a new season, but in reality, it doesn’t make a difference. Even when the Jets were playing some of their best football at the end of last season, it meant nothing for this season. Sometimes when a team is playing well for a stretch, it overshadows the problems that the team needs to address. The Jets are in that territory.

New York has numerous holes it needs to fill this offseason. The entire offensive line needs to be patched up. Gang Green also needs two starting cornerbacks. The Jets still lack an edge rusher and need a true No. 1 wide receiver to help out Sam Darnold.

“I think we’re not too far away,” Darnold said. “We do need to play more consistent football, especially on offense, but there are definitely some bright spots that we can continue to work on this offseason.”

It’s nice to see the team finally starting to put things together after a forgettable first half of the season. However, this little hot streak shouldn’t fool anybody. There are still going to be significant changes upcoming in the offseason despite the team’s performance over the last half of the season.

Marcus Maye is Jets Wire’s Player of the Game vs. Steelers

Marcus Maye is the player of the game following his strong performance against the Steelers.

If it wasn’t for Marcus Maye’s performance against the Steelers on Sunday, the Jets’ 16-10 win could’ve very well been a loss.

Maye made two huge plays with an interception in the endzone and a pass defense that could’ve resulted in a game-winning touchdown for Pittsburgh. For Maye’s effort, he is Jets Wire’s player of the game for Week 16 of the regular season.

Maye played a huge part in this victory with the two plays mentioned above. On the interception, the Steelers were inside the red zone, but Hodges decided to loft a ball into the endzone and Maye came sprinting over to make a leaping catch to keep Pittsburgh off the board.

As for the pass defense, that came on the Steelers’ final drive. Pittsburgh needed a touchdown to tie the game and James Washington had one-on-one coverage with Maye, who was able to bat the ball away to prevent the touchdown to secure the win.

The third-year free safety has finally put together a healthy season after an injury-riddled 2018 campaign. Maye has played well alongside Jamal Adams with 58 total tackles, seven pass defenses and one interception.

With Maye and Adams, the Jets have one of the best safety duos in the league. They both find ways to make big plays and are cornerstone pieces for New York’s future.

Jets vs. Steelers: 4 takeaways from New York’s win over Pittsburgh

Here are four takeaways from the Jets’ 16-10 win over the Steelers.

In a game that no team looked like they wanted to win, it was the Jets that ultimately pulled it out with a 16-10 win over the Steelers.

Winning ugly is better than losing, but the Jets’ offense is becoming a real concern. After driving down the field on the first drive of the game, New York’s offense went ice cold. Luckily, the Jets’ defense shut out the Steelers offense in the second half that carried them to a victory.

Let’s take a look at some takeaways from the Jets’ sixth win of the season.

Defense responded well after beatdown in Baltimore

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

The Jets defense was torched by Lamar Jackson and company last week in Baltimore, but bounced back quite nicely this week.

Devlin Hodges and Mason Rudolph are no Jackson, but New York’s defense did everything right on Sunday. They got to the quarterback with four sacks and forced two takeaways after only forcing one in their last three games. The Jets also got off the field well on third down, only allowing the Steelers to convert three times.

Gregg Williams continues to show why he is one of the best defensive coordinators in the league. This defense has been decimated by injuries all year long and are still able to give opposing offenses trouble.
