Nebraska football all-time roster: Defensive starters and backups

See which legends of defense made the cut in our all-time Nebraska football roster.

“The Blackshirts!” The nickname of the Nebraska Cornhuskers defensive has been a part of the history of the program since the second week of the 1964 season.

Head Football Coach Bob Devaney made the decision to embrace the new use of a platoon system that had just become legal by the NCAA. Because offense and defense had always been one solid unit at practices, Nebraska had no way to distinguish between the two squads. Devaney sent assistant coach Mike Corgan to a local sporting goods store to purchase pullovers for the team to tell the difference between the two sides.

When Corgan returned, he had with him black pullovers. The legend says that the black jerseys didn’t sell particularly well, and the assistant coach was able to cut a deal with the store as a result. Only the first-team defenders were initially given the black jerseys instead of the standard team-issued gray to motivate second and third-teamers on the depth chart. Soon after adopting the black practice pullovers, the “blackshirt” nickname became synonymous with the Nebraska defense.

LSU football all-time roster: Defensive starters and backups

See which legends of defense made the cut in our all-time LSU football roster.

When people think about the LSU football program, the historic 2019 team likely comes to mind. That national championship-winning squad was strong all-around, but it was especially notable for the offense and the litany of talent it produced.

But for most of this team’s history, that has not been the case. The Tigers earned a reputation over many years for their physical style of football and the number of future NFL stars they produced on defense.

We continue our look at LSU’s all-time roster, and now we’ll break down the defensive starters and backups.

Clemson football all-time roster: Defensive starters and backups

See which legends of defense made the cut in our all-time Clemson football roster.

A program with a long, rich history, Clemson has seen a lot of great teams with a lot of incredible talent over the years as the program has developed into a marquee name in college football.

Clemson has developed some incredible talent on the defensive side of the ball that has made the Tigers known consistently as one of the most dangerous defensive teams in the country year after year. From Christian Wilkins and the Power Rangers to Jeff  “the Judge” Davis, Clemson has produced some serious defensive talent.

Becoming a premier program more recently under current head coach Dabo Swinney, some of the defenses we’ve seen from the team in recent years are some of the best in college football history.

Wondering what an all-time Clemson roster would look like? We’ve got you covered! Clemson Wire and the rest of our College Wire sites recently put together our all-time program rosters.

Here’s a look at our choices for the Defensive starters and backups on Clemson football’s all-time roster.

Colorado football all-time roster: Defensive starters and backups

See which legends of defense made the cut in our all-time Colorado Buffaloes football roster.

Defense wins games and the Buffaloes have an impressive history of dominant players who’ve kept opposing offenses silent.

Colorado defenders have paved the way to bowl games, conference championships and the Buffs’ 1990 national championship unit was, of course, especially memorable. Even in recent years, the 2016 Pac-12 South-winning team wouldn’t have gotten there without that strong secondary. The Buffs also watched a pair of historically good linebackers sign with NFL teams just this offseason.

We at the Colorado Buffaloes Wire previously released our all-time offensive starters and backups, but now let us know what you think of our defensive picks.

Georgia football all-time roster: Defensive starters and backups

See which legends of defense made the cut in our all-time Georgia football roster.

There’s been no shortage of incredible talent to grace Sanford Stadium since the University of Georgia began playing football in 1892.

Of course offensively, the Bulldogs have had legends come through Athens like Herschel Walker, Frank Sinkwich, Charley Trippi, David Greene and Nick Chubb. But what Georgia’s known for across America is a mean, fast, physical defense. That’s always been the case, but now more than ever with former UGA safety Kirby Smart in charge at Georgia.

We compiled Georgia’s all-time defensive roster and had to include a few of the guys from the Bulldogs’ 2021 national championship defense, which will go down in history as maybe the greatest unit ever assembled in college football.

Texas A&M football all-time roster: Defensive starters and backups

See which legends of defense made the cut in our all-time Texas A&M football roster.

Texas A&M Football has a storied history full of great players. As the 2022 season approaches Aggies Wire will take a journey through that history, putting together the Aggies all-time roster, we started with the offensive side of the ball, now we examine the defensive side, and we’ll follow with special teams along with the coaching staff later in the week.

For a program as lauded as the Aggies, some tough cuts had to be made, and there are plenty of names that deserved to be on this list who aren’t here.

Oklahoma football all-time roster: Defensive starters and backups

See which legends of defense made the cut in our all-time Oklahoma Sooners football roster.

The Oklahoma Sooners have put together some of the more vaunted defenses in college football history. In addition to having some of the best units in the nation, the Sooners had some of the more iconic players in the sport run roughshod over their opponents.

From Lee Roy Selmon to Roy Williams, Oklahoma’s been a terror on the gridiron throughout the years.

As it was choosing the Oklahoma Sooners’ all-time offense, narrowing down defensive linemen and linebackers was a challenge as the Sooners have produced some incredibly talented players in the front seven.

Ohio State football all-time roster: Defensive starters and backups

See which legends of defense made the cut in our all-time Ohio State football roster. #GoBucks

The Ohio State football program is on the shortlist of teams considered the best in the history of the sport. As such, if you were to go into a lab and recreate the best all-time roster using any Buckeye player in history, what would the two-deep depth chart look like?

That’s exactly what we are doing here at Buckeyes Wire. We — and frankly all of our college wire sites — have taken on the unenviable task of trying to pick the best of the best of the best from OSU football to put together an all-time roster. We kicked things off earlier this week with our all-time offensive roster, and now we’re moving on to the defense.

As always with a program like Ohio State, there are bound to be some really, really good players that didn’t quite make our cut that you could argue for. But, hey, that’s a good problem to have when you are a fan of such historical relevance.

So, off we go with our all-time Ohio State football defensive roster. Feel free to get in on the conversation and let us know what you would change and why.

Florida football all-time roster: Defensive starters and backups

See which legends of defense made the cut in our all-time Florida Gators football roster.

Florida football has earned renown in more recent years on the offensive side of the ball thanks to [autotag]Steve Spurrier[/autotag]’s Fun-and-Gun offense, but many often forget the forces of nature who have dug in on defense for the Gators. In fact, there was even a time prior when the Gainesville gang was known for its stand-out defense.

Though there are no Heisman Trophy awards on the other side of the line of scrimmage for UF — and rarely are there winners on D — the Gators do have a player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with a plethora of other players who made an impact at the professional level.

Take a look below at the starting lineup along with the backups for our all-time greatest Gators on defense.

Penn State football all-time roster: Defensive starters and backups

See which legends of defense made the cut in our all-time Penn State football roster.

Penn State may be known as Linebacker U, but the Nittany Lions have a pretty strong legacy on the defensive line playing in its favor as well. Coming up with an all-time roster for the defense was a pretty easy task for the most part, but there just was not enough space to include some very worthy and memorable names.

For example, Sean Lee is one of the best linebackers in school history and recently brought a close to a stellar NFL career. Yet, he couldn’t quite make the cut on this all-time roster. That should give you an idea of how stacked Penn State’s defenses have been over the course of the program’s history.

This is our first crack and putting together an all-time defense on Nittany Lions Wire, but feel free to reach out to us and let us know who would make your roster.
