Whether you believe former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer was ever truly considering the Texas job or not, there were real sources and rumors out there that point him at least listening. We countered that with thoughts of our own, but there were things going on behind the scenes.
Meyer has been very silent on the whole thing, but many Longhorn fans and media members were giddy with excitement at the prospects of the three-time national title winner taking over for an underperforming Tom Herman staff.
According to more reports, it now appears as though the courtship between Meyer and Texas is now over according to sources close to Horns247’s Chip Brown. According to the report, Meyer will not take the job because of health reasons. He still has a brain cyst that is compounded by stress, and you have to think that’s the main factor in this case.
“There was an opportunity here too good not to pursue with Urban (Meyer),” the university source told Horns247. “If he’s a definite no, we just need to step back and assess.”
Nothing official has come from Meyer, and we may never get anything from the former OSU head man. We’re bringing you the news because the people we’ve talked to were adamant that this thing had some real legs.
It’s unclear what this means for Herman’s future in Austin, but the piece by Brown also indicates that unless there is booster support, the current Texas coach may be safe for at least another year because of the huge buyout.
So, we’ll stay on top of this in case anything else breaks, but for the moment, it looks like Meyer will continue to endear himself to OSU fans and continue on with his analyst duties with FOX Sports and BTN.
