Report: Texas RB expected to opt out, enter transfer portal

According to Horns247, Texas running back Keaontay Ingram is expected to opt out and enter the transfer portal.

There’s been a slew of bad news surrounding the Texas football program over the last week.

The Longhorns suffered a heartbreaking loss to Iowa State last week that diminished any hope for a Big 12 title this season. Shortly after, left tackle Samuel Cosmi and safety Caden Sterns announced their decision to opt out of the remainder of the season and prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft.

On Thursday, it was reported that another player has decided to follow suit. However, it’s for entirely different reasons. According to Horns247, running back Keaontay Ingram is expected to opt out and enter the transfer portal.

The junior playmaker was Texas’ leading rusher in 2019, compiling 144 carries for 853 yards and seven touchdowns. He added on 29 receptions for 242 yards and three touchdowns.

However, Ingram has had to deal with adversity this season. He battled a hamstring injury in the preseason then had two costly fumbles in Texas’ losses to TCU and Oklahoma.

With the growing speculation that head coach Tom Herman and his assistants — primarily running backs coach Stan Drayton —  may not return next season, Ingram is expected to dip his toes in the transfer portal to see if there may be a better fit.

True freshman Bijan Robinson and sophomore Roschon Johnson will continue to split carries in Ingram’s absence.

Texas doesn’t have much left to play for in their final two contests other than a higher quality bowl game. It’s certainly understandable as to why these players are choosing to make a business decision and do what they feel is best for their future.
