Report card: Handing out grades for TaylorMade Driving Relief

The TaylorMade Driving Relief skins game provided a chance for the Golfweek Grader to break out the red pen once more before summer begins.

Rory McIlroy: A+

The world’s No. 1 player was made for events like this. His power game and infectious smile are perfect for television. So is his willingness to talk smack.

“You guys are being a little quiet out here,” he said on the second hole, expecting to hear some banter from Fowler and Wolff. A moment later, after he sank a 4-footer to halve the hole, he looked over at his opponents and said, “I think you forget that I’ve won two FedEx Cups that total $25 million,” before jogging off to the third tee.

After Wolff sent his tee shot right a few minutes later, into a dune, McIlroy called out, “Hey Matt, thanks for doing your part to social distance!”

Rory chunked a chip, missed a short putt early, and then watched two putts on the back nine lip out, including one on 15 that could have won a three-hole, $300,000 skin. He also stuffed a few approach shots close, nearly holed out from a bunker on 16 and then hit a great a 9-iron to win closest-to-the-pin contest after the match finished in a tie. That won $1.1 million for his charity and the match.
