UTEP (1-9) vs. New Mexico State (1-9) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Can UTEP finally get another win? It’s been a rough eight-game run with a few tight battles, and no victories since beating Houston Baptist in the opener.

New Mexico State beat Incarnate Word for its first win of the season, but the offense hasn’t been consistent and the defense was getting hammered way too hard before dealing with the FCS team.

UTEP’s offense is miserable on third downs, there’s no pressure in the backfield, and it doesn’t have anything it can rely on offensively, but now it gets someone its own size.

New Mexico State dinks and dunks, UTEP takes more shots down the field, and when it comes to running games, it’s about dead even in mediocrity.

The biggest difference overall between these two bad teams? New Mexico State turns the ball over, and UTEP doesn’t.

This will come down to the mistakes, and the Aggies will make more of them.

Southern Miss (7-3) vs. WKU (6-4) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Southern Miss can still win the West. It has to beat WKU this week and Florida Atlantic next week, and it needs Louisiana Tech to lose to either UAB or UTSA.

WKU can still win the East, but it’s going to need a bunch of help. It has to beat USM and then Middle Tennessee, and then get Marshall and Florida Atlantic to lose twice.

No matter what, it’s been a great turnaround season for the Hilltoppers, even with the losses to slide all but out of the Conference USA race. It’s been two weeks since the 45-19 win over Arkansas that ended up getting Chad Morris fired, and now it’s rested.

WKU doesn’t take the ball away, but it’s playing some of the best D in the conference, and the team dominates the time of possession battle by being great on third downs, helped by a terrific passing game.

USM’s defense will do its part with its fantastic pass rush, and it’ll do a good job of controlling the clock on its own side. At home, the great Golden Eagle lines will be just a wee bit better in a good, tight, four quarter battle.

North Texas (4-6) vs. Rice (1-9) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Rice FINALLY got its first win of the season with a strong offensive performance in a win over Middle Tennessee. Can it close out strong against North Texas and UTEP to crank up the momentum going into next year?

North Texas can’t slip. This hasn’t been the year it was expected to be, but QB Mason Fine is back at the helm after a rough day in the blowout loss to Louisiana Tech, and a bowl is still a possibility by beating Rice this week and closing out against UAB.

The Mean Green passing game might not be the high-flying fun show it should be, but Rice doesn’t have the offense to keep up any sort of pace.

Fine will throw for 300 yards, the Owl running game won’t be enough to take over the game, and the turnover margin will be even. Rice was able to survive last week partly because it was a +2 against the Blue Raiders. It won’t be that this week.

Louisiana Tech (8-2) vs. UAB (7-3) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Even with the blowout loss to Marshall last week, Louisiana Tech can take the Conference USA West title with a win over UAB and if Southern Miss loses to WKU. Or, the Bulldogs can take care of this themselves and beat UAB before taking out UTSA next week.

Defending Conference USA champ UAB can still get pull off a division title by beating Louisiana Tech and then North Texas, and getting two Southern Miss losses.

The Blazers overcame their offensive lull – scoring nine points in two games – with a 37-10 wipeout of UTEP. They’re already bowl eligible, but winning out and coming up with a ten-win season would be a remarkable accomplishment.

Here’s the problem – they’ve only been good against the miserable teams.

Louisiana Tech’s offense still doesn’t have suspended starting QB J’Mar Smith or star WR Adrian Hardy, and it won’t have the running game to do enough against a Blazer defense that only allowing three yards per carry.

Tech might have Conference USA’s No. 1 offense, but for the second straight week it’s not going to move well enough to survive.

Marshall (7-3) vs. Charlotte (5-5) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Marshall can lock up the Conference USA East title with a win to go along with a Florida Atlantic loss to UTSA, but the more likely scenario is to win over the next two weeks against Charlotte and FIU.

Charlotte is out of the conference title picture, but it’s a win away from being eligible for its first bowl game as a program. On a three-game winning streak, it has to win this week at home or next week at Old Dominion to get it done.

First, the 49er offense has to rise up against a Marshall defense that clamped down on Louisiana Tech last week and is a bear against the run. The bigger problem for Charlotte will be the steady Herd ground game that’s averaging over five yards per pop.

The 49ers don’t do enough to take the ball away to offset several effective Herd drives. MU won’t get pounded in the time of possession battle – a huge key for Charlotte – and the fantastic pass rush will do just enough to hold down the dangerous downfield Charlotte passing attack.

Montana De La Rosa vs. Mara Romero Borella in the works for UFC event on Feb. 15

A 125-pound women’s matchup is in the works for a yet-to-be-announced UFC event this February.

A fight between women’s flyweights [autotag]Montana De La Rosa[/autotag] and [autotag]Mara Romero Borella[/autotag] is in the works for a Feb. 15 UFC card the promotion has yet to announce.

A person with knowledge of the situation told MMA Junkie of the booking Friday, but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. While no location is set, the promotion is targeting Rio Rancho, N.M.

Neither fighter has officially confirmed the matchup, but De La Rosa announced her participation on the Feb. 15 card in an Instagram post Friday.

A post shared by Montana De La Rosa (@montana.delarosa) on

De La Rosa (10-5 MMA, 3-1 UFC) had a four-fight winning streak snapped in June at UFC on ESPN+ 12, where she faced former LFA champion Andrea Lee. In her first loss in the UFC, De La Rosa dropped the bout by unanimous decision.

Prior to the defeat, De La Rosa had submitted all comers placed in her way in the UFC. In her promotional debut in December 2017, De La Rosa submitted Cristina Marks. Follow-up submission victories over Rachael Ostovich and Nadia Kassem propelled her into the UFC rankings.

Italy’s Romero Borella (12-6 MMA, 2-2 UFC) has split her two UFC appearances to date. After she won her lone Invicta fight in 2017, Romero Borella was inked to a UFC contract. She submitted Kalindra Faria in her debut, but lost a split decision to Kaitlyn Chookagian in her sophomore UFC outing.

In February, Romero Borella defeated Taila Santos by split decision. In her most recent fight in August, Romero Borella was finished by Lauren Murphy in the third round due to strikes.

Paul George praises value of Russell Westbrook as a teammate

Paul George, who played with Russell Westbrook for two years, isn’t surprised that Westbrook’s partnership with James Harden is succeeding.

Friday’s matchup between the Rockets and Clippers in Los Angeles will be the first time that former Thunder teammates Russell Westbrook and Paul George have played against one another since their offseason departures from Oklahoma City.

Though the Clippers and Rockets faced off last week in Houston and also in Hawaii during the preseason, George did not play in either game as he continued his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery.

When asked at Friday’s pregame shootaround about Westbrook’s new All-Star partnership in Houston with James Harden, George said he had no doubt the pairing would be successful.

His comments, via ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk:

I knew it was going to work. Russ is a winner. Russ wants to win, Russ does whatever it takes to win. My time playing with him, Russ doesn’t really have an ego. He puts his ego to the side.

He allowed me to be myself, he allowed me to be comfortable. And I had one of the best career [years] I had while playing alongside him. Russ is a heck of a teammate.

George makes a great point in the analogy to his own situation with Westbrook in Oklahoma City last season.

From the 2017-18 season to 2018-19, George took on a much larger role in the Thunder offense. His average shot attempts per game rose from 17 to 21, while his scoring and assists had corresponding jumps from 21.9 and 3.3 in 2017-18 to career-highs of 28.0 and 4.1 last year.

By contrast, Westbrook had fewer shot attempts and points, but had no complaints over his reduced usage — even though he was less than two years removed from being named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

It’s a similar story this year in Houston, where Westbrook’s average points and shot attempts are down slightly from a year ago. Harden leads the entire NBA with 38.4 points per game, and he’s clearly the top option for Mike D’Antoni. But Westbrook again doesn’t seem to mind, especially since the Rockets (11-4) are winning games at a high rate.

Back in July, George leveraged his way out of Oklahoma City and onto the Clippers, where he formed a new All-Star duo with reigning NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard. Both are Southern California natives, as well.

The George trade also cleared the way for Westbrook’s move to Houston, which occurred less than a week later.

But in the immediate aftermath of the offseason blockbuster, George made it clear that his exit from the Thunder had nothing to do with his feelings for Westbrook.

Friday’s nationally televised game on ESPN between Westbrook’s Rockets and George’s Clippers tips off at 9:30 p.m. Central time.

Eric Paschall leads all rookies in one of the NBA’s most notable stats

Eric Paschall is in the top-three in points per game, points scored and total rebounds for all-rookies in the NBA.

Eric Paschall’s rookie campaign has been one of the league’s most pleasant surprises, and now that we’re almost 20 percent of the way through the NBA season, it’s safe to say he’s no fluke.

Paschall has been a bright spot in a dismal start for the Golden State Warriors. The rookie has carried the team through the early parts of 2019. With Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry out, Paschall ranks in the top three in several statistical categories for the Warriors, including points per game (17.1) and field goal percentage (50.5).

Paschall’s 256 total points are good enough to not only lead Golden State, but rank as the most amount of points scored by any rookie this season— not bad for a guy who had 40 players picked before him in the 2019 draft.

Paschall leads lottery picks like Ja Morant (241), RJ Barrett (229) and Tyler Herro (168) in points. The Villanova product also ranks in the top-five in rookie points per game, total rebounds, rebounds per game, and field goal percentage.

Paschall has dropped two-30 point-plus games this season, Morant has one of his own, while Barrett, Herro, and Bulls rookie Coby White have zero— all players with better odds to win the 2020 Rookie of the Year according to Caesar’s sportsbook.

The most important stat for Paschall might be the fact he’s only missed one game for a team ravaged by injury. The Warriors lead the NBA in games missed due to injury, but the rookie has played in 15-of-16 games this season.

With most of the Warriors roster still on the mend, the 23-year old will continue to get opportunities to be the primary scorer when on the floor. If Paschall can continue to play at this pace, he should be a favorite to take home Rookie of the Month honors for November.
