3 biggest needs for the Raiders entering the 2020 offseason

The Oakland Raiders are right in the thick of things in the AFC playoff hunt, and with seven games remaining, they have a great chance of clinching a playoff berth for the first time since 2016.

However, it’s never too soon to look forward to the offseason as the team tries to continue its rebuild. So without further ado, here are the Raiders’ three biggest needs entering the 2020 offseason:

1. Linebacker

No position has haunted the Raiders more over the past decade than linebacker. Oakland has struggled to find consistent play at the position, cycling through dozens of players over the last few seasons.

If the Raiders want to improve as a defense, they need to get faster in the middle. While elite off-the-ball linebackers don’t often hit free agency, the 2020 draft does have several quality players at the position this year. Look for Oakland to address that need early next offseason.

Chris Paul tops The Athletic’s latest NBA Style Power Rankings

Chris Paul grabbed the top spot in The Athletic’s Week 3 NBA Style Power Rankings thanks to a Nipsey Hussle Marathon Clothing Company collaboration.

[jwplayer yqduqGwD-z6KDnl0B]

Dennis Schröder might have the best style on the Thunder, at least according to teammate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, but Chris Paul has been bringing his A-game as well, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed.

CP3 tops the latest edition of The Athletic’s NBA Style Power Rankings, released Wednesday.

Wosney Lambre credits Paul’s ranking to “his donning of Jerry Lorenzo’s much-anticipated Fear Of God collaboration with the late great Nipsey Hussle’s Marathon Clothing Company”.

“But Paul didn’t stop at his Nipsey tribute, the future HOFer waltzed through Chesapeake Energy Arena dripped and draped in a posh Pyer Moss pinstriped jacket with a funky Ambush hoodie that evoked streetwear classic Miskeen, all while staying true to his early season dedication to remaining as cozy as possible in blue windbreaker pants.”

Paul may be heading toward the end of his playing career, but his style game is still going strong.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who credited Schröder for wearing a “fur coat” during shootaround prior to the Thunder’s game against Indiana Tuesday, also came in on the list, landing at No. 8.

Dubbed ‘Pants Pants Revolution’ by Lambre, SGA’s “dedication to having the NBA’s grooviest trouser collection since Jack Ramsay stalked the sidelines is awe-inspiring.”

Maybe point guard play isn’t the only mentoring that Paul is providing to Gilgeous-Alexander in Oklahoma City.

Stock Report: Coaches may be reason why Cowboys won’t contend

On Sunday night, the Dallas Cowboys squared off against the Minnesota Vikings losing 28-24. The two teams are built identically in theory with good but not great, conservative  coaching, stout defensive play, elite running backs, and limited quarterbacks who thrive utilizing the play-action to spread to the football to their speedy wideouts.

The major difference is Dak Prescott possesses innate leadership skills, which typically galvanizes the Cowboys, while Kurt Cousins seems two errant throws from losing all confidence. During Sunday’s game, this difference made no difference at all.

Predictably, the bout was a competitive despite Dallas’ early 14-point deficit. Prescott did what Prescott does. He remained calm, championed his club after Dallas’ slow start, and engineered two drives to tie the game, 14-14, late in the first half. Prescott threw for 397 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Unpredictably, Cousins, who typically struggles against playoff caliber teams on primetime, gave the football world 84 million reasons why the Vikings should be feared moving forward. His stats weren’t huge; Cousins threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns. He played within himself and the Vikings’ identity and most importantly, did not turnover the ball.

For the Vikings, Cousins doesn’t appear to be the team’s weak link. This could change as the season proceeds, but for now, Cousins deserves a lot credit for working through his early season woes. Minnesota is good-to-great at every unit. There aren’t many NFL rosters more talented than this Viking’s roster.

The Cowboys, who are tied for first place in the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles, are now 5-4. There are numerous questions surrounding the Cowboys and none more important than this one: Can the Cowboys defeat formidable football teams?

The second half schedule is grueling and its increasingly difficult to determine how good or bad the Cowboys actually are.

This season they’ve defeated the tanking Miami Dolphins, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the used-to-be-football Giants twice, and the Jekyll and Hyde Philadelphia Eagles.

Besides the New York Jets debacle, Dallas’ losses are all against playoff bound teams. What a tough loss for Dallas.

Here is the stock report for Week 9.

Stock Up: Amari Cooper

Cooper doesn’t get enough credit for how great he is. Every week, he produces for the Cowboys by creating the needed separation from cornerbacks for catches. Maybe it’s his quiet personality and the fact his playing style is antic-free and rarely flashy.

It’s almost Kawhi Leonard-esque in how he operates on the football field.

The Pro Bowl receiver lines up, beats the cornerback with precise route running, catches the football, then repeats the process the next down. It feels machine-like.

During Sunday’s night game, Cooper snagged three spectacular, nearly impossible catches as if it was routine. He finished with 11 catches for 147 yards and one touchdown. His biggest contribution remains masking one of Prescott’s weakness: Prescott’s inability to throw wide receivers open.

Cooper doesn’t need to be thrown open because he’s the NFL’s 7-Eleven. As the schedule becomes tougher, Dallas should rely heavy on Cooper. Teams like the Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, and New England Patriots all play a lot of man coverage. The Cowboys must exploit any mismatches.

Stock Up: Randall Cobb

The wide receiver corp was once-upon-a-time a weakness for Dallas. This group is revamped and now a strength for the team. The wide receivers for Dallas could do no wrong, partially because Prescott bought extra time with his movement in the pocket, and mostly because the corp did an excellent job getting open. Cooper’s huge game overshadowed Cobb’s play.

Cobb is the perfect fit. He’s tough, gritty, plays in the slot or on the outside, and catches the ball are all levels. Underneath, screen plays, deep-balls, and intermediate levels; you name it and Cobb can do it, plus his yards after catch is always impressive. Cobb, a former Green Bay Packer, finished with six catches for 106 yards and one touchdown.

Stock Down: Dallas’ Coaching Staff

Dallas’ slow start are a bad habit. Last week after a bye the Cowboys started flat. Against the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers, similarly, it was a slow start. Typically, the first 15 to 20 plays are scripted based on the film’s advantages and disadvantages a coaching staff feels they can capitalize. Its head scratching to see the Cowboys struggle so early in games. Is it the player’s failure to execute? Or the coaches’ failure in preparing the players to execute?

Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s play-calling was excellent, for most of the game. It’s hard to determine if it’s his play-calling contributing to Dallas’ slow start. He’s normally committed to establishing Ezekiel Elliott, and play acting so Prescott can spread the ball around.

The Vikings’ game plan centered around limiting Elliott and begging Prescott to beat them with his arm. Though Prescott can carry the load, the team is much better when Elliott has it going as well.

Throughout the game, Moore  and the coaching staff should have found more creative ways to establish the presence of Elliott. Before the game, if someone told the Cowboys Elliott would rush for 20 carries for 47 yards, they all would probably agree it wouldn’t fare well for the Cowboys and that’s exactly what occurred.

Lastly, the last three meaningful plays for the Cowboys were mind-boggling. Elliott struggled throughout the game, and now the play calls are all for Elliott. The timing felt wrong and counterintuitive to the game’s flow. Why not see if Prescott can win the game with his arm or legs? Why not get the ball to Cooper or Cobb in space?

2nd-and-2, a Prescott-Elliott option. Elliott gains zero yards. 3rd-and-2 an Elliott hand-off. Lost of three yards. 4th-and-5, a pass target to Elliot for the first down. The pass is deflected by Eric Kendricks. Game over.

Stephen A. Smith says two NFL teams are interested in Colin Kaepernick

Will Colin Kaepernick land a job in the NFL this weekend?

Colin Kaepernick will have a chance to impress interested NFL teams this weekend at a private workout organized by the league, and according to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, at least two QB-needy clubs have “definitive interest” in the former 49ers QB.

Smith reported on First Take that multiple teams called the league office inquiring about Kaepernick. Smith also said that at least 10 team owners don’t want Kaepernick to return to the NFL.

“There’s two teams that were definitively interested in him that called the league office about him, that’s No. 1.

No. 2, I’m hearing there’s at least 10 owners, if not more, that want nothing to do with him. But they’re divided, because there’s about 10 to 15 who do believe he should be back in the league – which is why the league religiously stands up and states ‘we have not banished him from the league, teams have a right to bring him on. We haven’t prohibited them from bringing him on board.’”

Here’s everything we know about Kaepernick’s workout:

According to an ESPN report, the NFL sent a memo to all 32 teams to announce that it would be holding a workout for Kaepernick on Saturday in Atlanta. Teams that are unable to attend – and it’s likely that there will be many absences, on the eve of a Week 11 Sunday – will be provided video. Kaepernick will complete on-field work and an interview.

Kaepernick’s camp reportedly only learned about the upcoming workout on Tuesday, just four days before it is scheduled to happen. Kaepernick, who has repeatedly stated that he has been continually working out as he waits for an opportunity to return, tweeted that he’s looking forward to seeing team executives.

The workout will take place at the Falcons’ practice facility, according to the AJC. The event will be closed to the public and to the media, so the only reviews of Kaepernick’s performance will come from the teams and the league itself.

According to ESPN, Kaepernick’s camp asked the league to push the workout back to a Tuesday, which would be more convenient for any interested teams, or to a later Saturday, but the league rejected the request.

Texans vs Ravens: Point spread, over/under for Week 11

The Baltimore Ravens are favored by 4.5 points over the Houston Texans, but the matchup is projected to be one of the highest scoring of Week 11.

The Houston Texans and the Baltimore Ravens face off for a Week 11 encounter that features two of the most dynamic young quarterbacks in the game with Deshaun Watson and Lamar Jackson. Though the game is in the early game time slot on CBS, the implications and the matchup suggests one that will be worthy of late afternoon or prime time billing.

Odds-makers are giving the Ravens the advantage at -4.5, according to BetMGM, which are tied with the Kansas City Chiefs for the fifth-slimmest odds of Week 11. Keep in mind the Chiefs aren’t playing “at home,” but rather in Mexico City.

The point total for the game is 49.5, which is tied with Falcons-Panthers for the third-highest point total of Week 11. Only Chargers-Chiefs (52.5) and Saints-Buccaneers (50.5) have higher point totals.

In the history of the series, there have been three games that have gone over the 50-point threshold: Week 10, 2008 (54), Week 7, 2012 (56), and Week 14, 2010 (62). While Joe Flacco was the starting quarterback for the Ravens in all three of those games, Matt Schaub started in two of them. Sage Rosenfels was the Houston starter for the 2008 encounter. Who knows what Watson and Jackson will tally?

The game is a preview of a divisional playoff matchup, if the Texans can get that far. Currently, the Ravens are projected to have the No. 2 seed in the conference while the Texans are the presumptive No. 3. In wild-card scenarios, the highest wild-card goes to the lowest divisional host. As it stands, a playoff rematch would take place at M&T Bank Stadium. If the Texans beat the Ravens Sunday, that could flip-flop with the Texans the No. 2 seed and NRG Stadium the site for a future playoff rematch.

Rams promote OL Chandler Brewer and CB Donte Deayon from practice squad

The Rams added two players to the 53-man roster, while signing another to the practice squad.

Sean McVay hinted that the Los Angeles Rams might fill the voids left by Brian Allen and Bryce Hager by calling players up from the practice squad, and on Wednesday, they made two moves official. They promoted offensive lineman Chandler Brewer and defensive back Donte Deayon from the practice squad, taking the spots of Allen and Hager on the 53-man roster.

Additionally, the Rams signed center Nate Trewyn to the practice squad.

With all the injuries the Rams have suffered lately, from Brian Allen to Rob Havenstein to Brandin Cooks, roster moves were bound to be on the horizon. There were two openings on the active roster and not enough depth on the offensive line.

McVay said the Rams would look into claiming someone off waivers if that opportunity arose, but they clearly feel more confident in Brewer than any outside free agents currently available.

As for Deayon’s promotion, it comes on the heels of Darious Williams being out at least one week with an ankle injury. He was the No. 4 cornerback behind Jalen Ramsey, Troy Hill and Nickell Robey-Coleman.

With Williams out and Deayon promoted, it’s likely the team will elevate David Long Jr. to the No. 4 CB role. He’s been a healthy scratch for some of the season and played very sparingly, but he was a third-round pick with good potential.

Patriots’ Week 16 matchup vs. Bills flexed to Saturday afternoon

The Patriots will play on Saturday afternoon against the Bills in Week 16 at 4:30 p.m. ET.

The New England Patriots will play on Saturday afternoon against the Buffalo Bills in Week 16 at 4:30 p.m. ET.

New England’s last regular season Saturday game was in 2016 and it resulted in a 41-3 victory over the New York Jets at home. The game will be in Gillette Stadium — it will be aired on NFL Network and CBS.

The Patriots barely slipped past the Bills during their 16-10 victory in Week 4 this year, but both teams will have much different looks in Week 16. The Patriots will likely have Isaiah Wynn, N’Keal Harry and Mohamed Sanu fully acclimated into the offense. The Bills lost Josh Allen due to injury in the first matchup and they’ll likely have their starting quarterback in this game.

If the Bills remain competitive this season, they could become an issue for the Patriots in Week 16.

A Memphis player is blowing up Twitter by wearing short shorts

Meet Lester Quinones and his short shorts.

Who wears short shorts?

Lester Quinones wears short shorts.

The Memphis freshman shooting guard is turning heads with a sartorial choice that’s a throwback to a long-ago era of basketball, and it’s delighting and baffling everyone on Twitter.

It’s not just that the shorts are short. He actually tucks them into compression wear under his uniform. And his explanation is simple.

“It’s just, it’s different. It’s just me,” he told the Memphis Commercial Appeal recently. “It’s just kind of my thing.”

It’s perfect, it’s a great quote, don’t ever change, Lester. We need more short shorts in basketball. Here’s a full look:

Christopher Johnson makes it official: Adam Gase will return in 2020

Christopher Johnson confirmed with reporters on Wednesday that Adam Gase would return as head coach for the 2020 season.

[jwplayer rzKgNnfu-ThvAeFxT]

After months of absence, Christopher Johnson finally addressed the media on Wednesday.

In doing so, he made major headlines. The Jets CEO made it clear that Adam Gase will return as the team’s head coach in 2020. Gase is not in jeopardy of being fired; instead, he has Johnson’s confidence.

Johnson said he told the team last week that Gase would return despite outside noise of there being a potential coaching change. He also spoke with some players about the decision one on one. Gase is 2-7 in his first season as the Jets head coach. Johnson, however, has not wavered in his support for his first head coaching hire despite some frustrations.

“I want to assure you there will be no changes in coaches here,” Johnson told reporters. “Adam has the trust of this team. He has the trust of Sam. He has Joe’s trust. He has my trust. He’s a good man. He’s a good coach.”

Johnson is understandably frustrated with the team’s progress or lack thereof through nine games but has shown the utmost support for his new regime. He still believes the future is bright.

“There’s a lot of work to do,” he said. “There’s a great deal of work to do. Everyone understands that and we’re just getting started. But I feel really good about this team moving forward.”

The relationships that Gase has built in the building with Sam Darnold and Joe Douglas have not gone unnoticed and played a big part in the decision to bring Gase back next season. He is not solely keeping Gase for Darnold’s sake, but it was a major component in his decision making.

“It’s absolutely important, but that’s not why I’m keeping Adam,” Johnson said of Darnold. “That’s certainly a component. Changing systems year after year is a disaster for a young quarterback, especially.”

As for Gase and Douglas, Johnson said, “Seeing him work with Joe, it’s a whole new dynamic in this building. It’s a really positive dynamic. They have the same vision for this team going forward.”

Matthew Stafford still out from Lions practice with his broken back

Lions QB Matthew Stafford was at Wednesday’s practice session but did not participate due to the broken bones in his back

[jwplayer rzKgNnfu-ThvAeFxT]

There was some guarded optimism that Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford would be back in action at practice on Wednesday. That did not materialize.

While Stafford and his injured back were physically present at the team’s facility in Allen Park, the longtime starting QB did not participate in any of the physical reps. He never put a helmet on and was not dressed for action.

Stafford remains week-to-week with the fractured vertebrae. He missed his first start since 2011 in Week 10. Jeff Driskel got the start in Chicago and projects to continue in that role until Stafford is capable of returning.
