Patrick Chung among 3 Patriots limited on injury report for Week 11

A short injury report after the bye.

Safety and special teams standout Nate Ebner (ankle/back) didn’t participate in the New England Patriots’ practice on Wednesday in preparation for the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11, the team announced in an injury report.

Safety Patrick Chung (heel/chest), tight end Matt LaCosse (knee) and defensive tackle Danny Shelton (ankle) were limited. That marks a return to practice for Chung, who had missed the previous two sessions.

The Patriots have two more practices left in the week, and will assign their injury designations on Friday. They play the Eagles at 4:25 p.m. in Philadelphia this Sunday.

How would Spurs’ DeMar DeRozan fit on the Orlando Magic?

The Orlando Magic are reportedly interested in acquiring DeMar DeRozan. How would he fit with their current players and offensive system?

DeMar DeRozan is the main asset the San Antonio Spurs received when they traded Kawhi Leonard, but he may not be in their long-term plans.

As noted by The Athletic’s Sam Amick, the four-time All-Star was “quite a ways apart” from agreeing to a contract extension with San Antonio before the season. As such, it remains possible that the Spurs decide to trade the 30-year-old wing before the deadline in February to get something back for the veteran shooting guard.

According to The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor, one team that has expressed interest in DeRozan is the Orlando Magic (via The Ringer):

“The Spurs could always deal him sooner rather than let him walk for nothing. Multiple league sources say the Magic are scouring the trade market for scoring help and have already expressed interest in trading for DeRozan. It would surprise none of the front-office executives I’ve spoken with if the Spurs did move DeRozan.”

Orlando would certainly not be willing to part with Nikola Vucevic or Aaron Gordon for a 30-year-old DeRozan. But perhaps for one of the Magic’s more ancillary pieces, a deal would be realistic.

Considering that DeRozan is one of the most prolific mid-range shooters of the last decade, the first question is whether the Magic would allow him to play that style if such a transaction occurred.

First, to properly contextualize just how important this is to his offensive role, the San Antonio wing is currently averaging more mid-range field goal attempts per game (7.0) than any other player in the league. In fact, he has connected on more mid-range field goals (33) than six different NBA teams have so far this season.

Orlando would be a natural fit in this regard considering they rank third among all NBA teams in frequency of mid-range shots, per Cleaning the Glass.

Last season, Magic wing (and former DeRozan teammate) Terrence Ross ranked ninth in mid-range field goals attempted. Considering that coach Steve Clifford allowed Ross to fire so often in this zone, the expectation should be that DeRozan would be given a similar green light.

When including passes, DeRozan has finished nearly half of his offensive possessions as the ball-handler in the pick-and-roll. That would also make him a strong fit alongside Orlando’s Nikola Vucevic, who leads all active players in scoring (6.6 ppg) from these sets.

Vucevic ranks Top 5 in total scoring on pick-and-pop opportunities and just a few slots behind current DeRozan teammate LaMarcus Aldridge. The two-man offense of Vucevic and DeRozan is quite a bit better than anything else Orlando has on their roster.

But perhaps the biggest need that the Magic have right now is a lack of any one-on-one scoring threat. The team currently ranks 29th in isolation points, averaging just 3.1 ppg.

DeRozan ranks Top 20 among all NBA players on ISOs (2.5 ppg), more than doubling the output of Orlando’s current isolation-scoring leader DJ Augustin (0.9 ppg). For context: DeRozan has finished Top 20 in isolation-scoring each season since 2012-13.

In fact, he averaged almost exactly as many points (4.1 ppg) on ISOs as the entire Magic roster (4.2 ppg) last season. When including his passes in 2018-10, only Houston’s James Harden produced more points per game on this play type.

For the Magic to return to the playoffs after making it last year, a scorer like DeRozan would go a long way. If San Antonio is willing to accept a discount on a trade just so they don’t lose him for nothing as a free agent in July, he could be an interesting addition for Orlando.

Nate Diaz paid back a fan who lost money betting on UFC 244

Awesome.

Nate Diaz lost this month’s UFC 244 to Jorge Masvidal after the doctor stopped the fight due to a pair of gnarly gashes on Diaz’s face.

Masvidal went into the fight as the betting favorite, which probably inspired one Nate Diaz fan to drop a hefty bet on the underdog. He just wasn’t exactly prepared for the loss.

A week after the fight, an Instagram user, unknownkillers213, commented on one of Diaz’s posts that he had lost all his rent money betting on Diaz and was stuck living in his car. While unknownkillers213 would later clarify that he wasn’t actually living in his car, Diaz still threw some money his way. (Warning: Some NSFW language)

Note: Swipe through the Instagram photos.

As we can see in the screenshots, Diaz responded to unknownkillers213’s DM that provided proof of the lost bet and asked for his PayPal. The fan wrote in the caption:

Update for everyone asking me, Yes Nate actually helped me out Nate is the true OG BMF he sent me more money than what I lost on my bet and I’m using it to buy from his cbd company “Game Up” Nate is a really cool guy when I made that post I didn’t think twice about it I didn’t even think he would see it and I even let him know that I wasn’t really sleeping in my car it was more of a joke but it was awesome the way he responded and the fact that he refunded me and gave me some extra cash just goes to show he is a man of the people !!! 💯 👊🏻 🥋🐐

So, no, Diaz didn’t help out a fan who needed a place to live, but it was still a cool gesture from the UFC star.

Should the Eagles attend Colin Kaepernick’s private workout?

The Eagles should not attend Colin Kaepernick’s private workout

[jwplayer LSlnzZLP]

In the famous term made popular by Ricky Watters, “For who? “For what”?

That could definitely be the motto when discussing whether the Eagles should attend Colin Kaepernick’s personal workout on Saturday. The Eagles are known for doing their due diligence whenever a talented player becomes available and with the news that all 32 NFL teams have been invited to Atlanta to watch the former 49ers star perform, the question has to be asked, will the Eagles send front office personnel and scouts?

Kaepernick, who led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2012, hasn’t played a game since becoming a free agent in the offseason of 2017.

If you’re interested in theatrics and good drama, then attending the workout would make sense, even with the Eagles preparing to face the defending Super Bowl champions just hours later in a huge home game.

Adding to the theatrics, Kaepernick is also the same guy that called Malcolm Jenkins a “sellout” and a “neo-colonialist.” Jenkins is an Eagles captain and carries a ton of weight in the locker room.

If you thought Carson Wentz had eyes behind his head and developed acne on his face from dealing with Nick Foles as his backup for those two seasons, just imagine the stress Wentz will deal with when he’s asked about Kaepernick?

Or how will he deal with questions about gadget plays involving the athletic Kaepernick, or critics and pundits calling for his job the first time he struggles. Both quarterbacks have flourished in the RPO focused offensive system, and Kaepernick’s athleticism could make for interesting conversation in regards to how he’d look commanding the Eagles offense.

The Eagles have had previous opportunities to sign Kaepernick and are unlikely to sign him this go around either. Also pertinent to the matter, the quarterback position isn’t currently a need and there’s no guarantee that Kaepernick would be an upgrade over Josh McCown as the backup.

Due diligence on free agents players is always a must, but in this case, the Philadelphia Eagles may choose to pass.

Rams film room: How Jared Goff has become one of NFL’s worst play-action QBs

Jared Goff has been a mess on play-action passes, and while it’s not all his fault, he deserves plenty of blame.

A staple of the Rams offense the last two years was play-action passes. They were one of the best teams in the NFL in that department in Sean McVay’s first two seasons, but things have changed dramatically this year.

The Rams have tried to utilize play action this season, but Jared Goff has suddenly turned into one of the worst quarterbacks in the league after play fakes. According to ESPN, Goff has a passer rating of 71.0 on play-action passes – the worst mark in the NFL.

For most of the 2018 season, Goff was among the top quarterbacks on play action, posting a passer rating well above 100. That’s a troubling trend and it’s a huge reason Los Angeles’ offense has taken a monumental step backward from last year.

The reasoning is fairly simple, too. It’s not that wide receivers are dropping passes or their routes aren’t good enough. It primarily falls on the shoulders of Goff and the offensive line – with a dash of an ineffective running game mixed in.

Because the Rams aren’t running the ball well right now, defenses aren’t biting on play fakes. They don’t buy the fact that Los Angeles is going to hand the ball off and aren’t exactly threatened by Todd Gurley or the other tailbacks. When you’re 19th in rush attempts and 20th in rushing yards, teams aren’t going to pay much attention to the ground game.

That’s a small part of the problem, but the primary issues are with the offensive line.

Even the most casual football fans know play action doesn’t work without the quarterback getting time in the pocket. If working under center, Goff has to turn his back to the defense to fake the handoff to the running back. The offensive line has to give Goff time to execute the fake and allow the routes to develop down the field.

Currently, the O-line is not getting the job done. To make matters worse, neither is Goff.

Even when he does get time in the pocket, he can’t hit open receivers downfield. His accuracy has regressed this season at every level of the field, which is why his completion percentage is down from 65% in 2018 to 60.3% this season.

Let’s take a look at a few examples of Goff simply making bad decisions and throws.

This was ruled defensive pass interference, but Cooper Kupp was open and Goff underthrew him – badly. If Goff throws the ball when Kupp comes free initially, it has a chance to go for a big gain.

He waits too long and the defender closes the gap with the ball coming up well short.

On this play-action pass, he wisely avoids throwing into double-coverage and decides to check down to Josh Reynolds in the flat. But he throws an embarrassingly bad pass that went backwards for a fumble; if he hits Reynolds, it likely goes for a big play.

Finally, here’s another example of Goff getting enough time after a play-action fake to find someone open. Instead of seeing Cooper Kupp release off his block and come wide open on the weakside, Goff stares down his primary target (Tyler Higbee) and forces the ball into double-coverage.

It was easily intercepted by Joe Haden, ending what could have been a fairly promising drive.

Without the benefit of play action working, the Rams offense is stalling like crazy. Some of it falls on the offensive line playing as poorly as any in the NFL right now, but Goff isn’t doing anything to make up for it – which is something the better QBs in the league can do.

This regression is alarming, and it has to change if the Rams are going to get things back on track. It starts with running the ball consistently, getting better play from the offensive line – which is decimated right now – and finally, some improvement from Goff.

Eamon’s Corner: Let’s not pretend Mayakoba caddie drama didn’t happen

We all remember Cheapskate-Gate, where it was revealed that Matt Kuchar paid only a paltry percentage of his winner’s check to David Ortiz.

[jwplayer FbLbRmJ9-9JtFt04J]

The 2018 Mayakoba Golf Classic was won by Matt Kuchar, who also emerged as the biggest loser of the week.

We all remember Cheapskate-Gate, where it was revealed that Kuchar paid only a paltry percentage of his winner’s check to David ‘El Tucan’ Ortiz, the local caddie he used that week.

Kuchar’s once-pristine reputation was spit-roasted on social media. The whole thing was a master class in how to botch a public-relations crisis.

But let’s hope that everyone doesn’t just pretend that last year’s drama didn’t happen.

Justin Patton recalled from OKC Blue

Patton averaged 6 points, 6 rebounds and 4.5 assists in two games with the OKC Blue. The Thunder assigned to him their G League affiliate on Nov. 6.

[jwplayer yqduqGwD-z6KDnl0B]

The Thunder have recalled Justin Patton from the OKC Blue of the NBA G League.

The team announced the move on Wednesday.

Patton started two games for the OKC Blue, averaging 6.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 4.5 blocks, and 1.5 steals in 23.4 minutes per game.

In a 113-109 loss to the Agua Caliente, the G League affiliate of the Los Angeles Clippers, Patton played 24 minutes, scoring 10 points while pulling down four rebounds and dishing out four assists.

He was assigned to the OKC Blue on November 6.

Patton has seen limited court time for the Thunder this season, logging six minutes in Oklahoma City’s 120-92 blow out win over the Warriors. In that game, he missed both of his shot attempts, but did grab two rebounds to go along with a turnover and three personal fouls.

The center played sparingly for the Thunder during the preseason, averaging 3.0 points per game, shooting 37.5% from the field, hitting on 6-of-16 attempts.

Oklahoma City signed Patton in August of 2019.
