Viktor Hovland breaks PGA Tour’s longtime ‘Puerto Rico Open Curse’

Viktor Hovland broke the PGA Tour’s “Puerto Rico Open Curse” with his win at the Mayakoba Golf Classic on Sunday.

Not only did Viktor Hovland earn his second PGA Tour win on Sunday, he also put to rest a curse that’s been haunting the Tour for more than a decade.

Earlier this year in February, Hovland won the Puerto Rico Open, an event that’s put a burden of sorts on its winners over the years. Players who won the Puerto Rico Open never went on to win another tournament on Tour, with one exception: Michael Bradley, who won the Puerto Rico Open in 2009 and again in 2011.

Tony Finau won in 2016 and has yet to win since, losing in two playoffs along the way. Alex Cejka, 2015’s champion, has lost in one playoff, same with 2013 winner Scott Brown, whose playoff loss was with Kevin Kisner against Jonas Blixt and Cameron Smith at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2017.

Whether you’re superstitious or just a little stitious like Michael Scott, Hovland’s win is good news for a handful of Tour pros. We’re not saying you’ll see Bradley, Brown, Cejka, Finau, Greg Kraft, Derek Lamely, George McNeill, Chesson Hadley, D.A. Points or Martin Trainer in the winner’s circle when the Tour returns in 2021, but don’t be so surprised if you do.

Viktor Hovland wins Mayakoba Golf Classic with birdie on final hole

Viktor Hovland claimed the Mayakoba Golf Classic title in Mexico this week, winning by one at 20 under.

The PGA Tour closed its 2020 calendar year in style on Sunday in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

With three holes to play, seven players were within three shots of the lead at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Aaron Wise took a share of the lead into the clubhouse at 19 under after a final-round 8-under 63.

Tied for the lead on the final hole at El Camaleon Golf Club, Viktor Hovland claimed the outright lead with a birdie to win for the second time this year following his victory in February at the Puerto Rico Open. Hovland signed for a 6-under 65 to win by one at 20 under.

Viktor Hovland ties career-low with 63 at Mayakoba Golf Classic

Viktor Hovland was on fire Saturday at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, carding an 8-under 63 at El Camaleon Golf Club.

In his first appearance at El Camaleón Golf Club in 2019, Viktor Hovland didn’t stick around for the weekend.

In his second, he might just take the title.

The 23-year-old is in good position to win his second PGA Tour event after carding an 8-under 63 Saturday at the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

Coming off rounds of 67 and 69 at El Camaleón, Hovland began his day with a bogey on No. 1, but quickly shook it off. He rattled off five birdies, including three straight from Nos. 5-7 to finish the front nine 4 under and added four more on the back nine — three more consecutively on Nos. 15-17 — to finish the day matching his lowest round on Tour.

While the 2019 Ben Hogan Award winner walked off the course in second at 14 under, the missed opportunities from Saturday were fresh on his mind. Emiliano Grillo still leads the way at 16 under and Tom Hoge snuck past Hovland in second at 15 under. Justin Thomas, who shot a 62 Saturday, and Patrick Rodgers are T-5 at 12 under.

MAYAKOBAScores | Photo gallery

“I was able to hit a lot of good iron shots today and had a lot of close looks for birdie and honestly missed my fair share of them today,” Hovland said. “I was really solid tee to green and luckily, in the end, I was able to take advantage of some of the good approaches.”

Hovland, the former Oklahoma State star who turned pro last year and won his first Tour title at the 2020 Puerto Rico Open, said the tee shot on El Camaleón’s first hole was difficult so he wasn’t beating himself up about his sole blemish of the day. He bogeyed the par-4 first in the second round as well.

After making the cut early Saturday following the second round’s suspension due to darkness Friday evening, Hovland extended his streak of cuts made on Tour to 17, trailing only Rory McIlroy (23) and Xander Schuaffele (18).

One of the young rising stars on Tour who’s often mentioned in the company of U.S. Open runner-up Matthew Wolff and PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa, it’s only a matter of time before Hovland earns his second win. Last season after the Tour’s 13-week break due to the coronavirus pandemic, Hovland played in 11 events, recording seven top-25s including a T-3 at the Workday Charity Open.

This season, he has competed in four events, with his most notable finish a T-13 at the U.S. Open and most recently, T-15 at the Vivint Houston Open.

Hovland’s round Saturday in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, continued to boost his confidence in his second year as a pro.

“I feel like I’m a lot closer. I feel like I’ve given myself a better chance to have rounds like this more often,” Hovland said. “And chipping it a little bit better, I’m putting it a little bit better so I don’t have to have so many things go my way to shoot a 63. Obviously, I still have things go your way but it’s not as much and I’m just kind of increasing my chances to play better every day.”

Hopefully for Hovland, that confidence continues Sunday for the final 18 holes.

Looking to end winless streak, Tony Finau shares lead at Mayakoba Golf Classic

The 2020-21 PGA Tour season has proven to be a season for ending winless streaks. Tony Finau is looking to join the crowd.

The 2020-21 PGA Tour season has proven to be a great opportunity for golfers to end winless streaks. Tony Finau is looking to join the crowd.

Already this season, Stewart Cink (11 years), Martin Laird and Brian Gay (seven years), Hudson Swafford and Sergio Garcia (three years) all terminated extended winless streaks.

On Friday, Finau shot a second-round 66 to tie for the lead at 9 under after 36 holes at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, the final Tour event in the calendar year 2020.

“Anytime you have length, you have a little bit of an advantage,” said the long-hitting Finau after his round at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, a par-71 course playing 7,071 yards this week. “This golf course, you don’t have to have length. It’s not a long golf course. You have to hit it in the fairway. I seem to have the right combo for the golf course this week. Hopefully that continues, with 36 to go.”

[vertical-gallery id=778078781]

He last won in 2016 at the Puerto Rico Open. It remains his lone Tour victory. Finau was close two other times. In 2019, he lost to Xander Schauffele in a playoff at the WGC-HSBC Champions. In February, he led by two late at the Waste Management Phoenix Open before falling in a playoff to Webb Simpson.

According to Justin Ray of the 15th Club, Finau is tied with Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar for posting the most top-10 finishes without a win over the last four years.

Finau is in a good spot to get back in the winner’s circle this week. He started on the 10th hole on Friday and made three birdies on each side before making a bogey on his final hole.

“When you’re scoring well, it’s always a good feeling,” he said.

MAYAKOBAScores | Photo gallery | Tee times, TV info

Tied with Finau for the clubhouse lead after the early group is Tom Hoge, who shot a 4-under 67 in the second round. Hoge has yet to win in 165 career starts on Tour.

“More than anything for me, I’ve gotten the ball in play off the tee,” Hoge said on Friday. “I’ve struggled with that here in the past, so that was kind of my focus this year. There’s some tight holes out there and I’ve tried to steer it a little bit in the past too much. I’ve just tried to go out and make a confident swing each tee shot.”

Russell Knox, who like Finau hasn’t won since 2016, had the solo lead after the first day and is a shot back after bogeying the 18th to posting a second-round 69.

Weather has been part of the story this week. Friday’s round was delayed by one hour.

The third round is set for Saturday with Golf Channel’s live coverage starting at 2 p.m. ET.

Mayakoba Golf Classic matchups, placings and first-round leader predictions

Feeling lucky this week? Here are some bets that may be worth your while for the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

Conventional tournament play wraps up on the PGA Tour’s 2020 schedule with this week’s Mayakoba Golf Classic at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Below, we’ll look for the best value bets in the 2020 Mayakoba Golf Classic betting odds with tournament matchups, placings and first-round leader (FRL) predictions.

The tournament boasts its strongest field ever as defending champion Brendon Todd looks to hold off world no. 3 Justin Thomas, four-time major winner Brooks Koepka and company. El Camaleon has hosted a PGA Tour event every year since 2007 and measures just over 7,000 yards while playing to a par 71.

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. ET.

Mayakoba Golf Classic: Fantasy rankings | Betting odds

Matchup bets

Justin Thomas vs. Brooks Koepka (+138)

Thomas is a -189 favorite in this head-to-head tournament matchup against Koepka. They are the top two betting favorites for the Mayakoba Golf Classic with Thomas’ +650 odds representing an implied win probability of 13.33% to Koepka’s 7.69% win probability at +1200 outright odds.

Thomas is the top player in the field at No. 5 in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings while Koepka is No. 32. Thomas is also the better iron player and seems a better fit to the course but golf betting is about value and Koepka, a four-time major winner, shouldn’t be plus-money against anyone. Chase the value with anything possible over 72 holes, especially in the final event of the year.

Tony Finau vs. Corey Conners (-106)

Conners is a nice value here as a slight underdog off of back-to-back T-10 finishes at the Masters and RSM Classic. Finau tied for 38th at Augusta National Golf Club and sat out last week. Ride the hot hand of Conners in the battle of top ball-strikers.

Placing bets

Top 5: Harris English (+350)

English won here in 2013 and finished fifth last year. Those results may have been different if the fields would have been as strong as this, but he’s highly experienced at this venue and has been in great form in the second half of 2020. He finished fourth at the U.S. Open and is coming off a T-6 at the RSM Classic two weeks ago.

Looking to place a legal, online bet on the 2020 Mayakoba Golf Classic? Get some action on it in CO, IN, NJ, TN and WV at BetMGM.

Top 10: Doug Ghim (+800)

Ghim, a former top college player, is making his debut at El Camaleon ranked 164th in the Golfweek rankings. He’s coming off of back-to-back top-20 finishes and is averaging 0.95 Strokes Gained: Approach over his last 11 measured rounds (18 total), according to Data Golf. He’s in store for a big 2021, and bettors should be jumping on the bandwagon early.

Top Asian: Byeong Hun An (+200)

An is the top player in a much less competitive Asian group than usual. He’s the second-ranked Asian in the Official World Golf Ranking (excluding Japan), but he’s the only one of the top three in attendance this week. He missed the cut in his lone appearance in 2017, but his typically-strong approach game should play well and the slower greens won’t be as punitive to his poor putting.

First-round leader

Akshay Bhatia (+12500)

Take a flier on Bhatia, who made it into the tournament as a Monday qualifier. The 18-year-old would be 126th in the Golfweek rankings but has not met the minimum requirement of events played.

He missed the cut against a much easier field at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, but he tied for ninth against stiffer competition at the Safeway Open, where he opened with a 66 in the first round.
