WATCH: Fisherman pets mako shark to prove point

What does the Southern California-based fisherman do with smaller sharks attracted by his chumming technique?

The accompanying footage shows Poe gently grabbing a free-swimming mako shark by its dorsal fin and stroking its back as casually as one might stroke the back of a dog or cat.

“Come on, girl. Come here,” Poe says, reaching toward the 6-foot shark. “We’re gonna get you some pets. Come on, come on. Yeah, get you some pets.”

It’s a definite don’t-try-this-at-home moment, not advisable for anyone without vast experience working with sharks.

Poe, who tags apex predators for the Marine Conservation Science Institute, has caught an estimated 5,000 sharks and understands their behavior as well as anyone.

He told For The Win Outdoors that he was chumming in the San Pedro Channel off Los Angeles when the small mako shark appeared.

“She was just hanging out,” he said. “I was hand-feeding her and petting her for several hours while waiting for an adult shark to show up. I never [bait] them unless they’re mature females 9 feet and up.”

He said the shark was never aggressive, and that he shared the video because mako sharks “are always thought of as such vicious animals, and it’s just not true.

“They come up to the boat all excited ready to kill something because that’s necessary to eat usually. But after a while they calm down and you get to know their real personality.”

One of the largest mako sharks Poe has tagged is named Cinderella. Her movements can be tracked via the MCSI’s Expedition White Shark app.

“When I tagged Cinderella, an 11-foot, 4-inch mako, I spent a long time with her, feeding her before I caught her,” Poe said. “It’s part of an effort to reduce capture shock. As a result, after I caught her, and tagged and released her, she stayed at the boat for an hour-and-a-half eating out of my hand.”

Poe, who recently had an 18- to 20-foot great white shark “hang out with me for five hours,” said he typically sends the sharks he tags away with an affectionate stroke of the head or back.

Call it a perk.

Tennessee adds offer for 2020 offensive lineman

Tennessee adds offer for 2020 offensive lineman.

Tennessee is still looking to add to its 2020 recruiting class as the February signing day approaches, and the Vols put an offer on the table for Mississippi offensive tackle Dylan Spencer.

Spencer is a three-star prospect on the 247Sports Composite, at 6-foot-3 and 300-pounds.

He is the former high school teammate of dual-threat quarterback Jimmy Holiday, who came onto campus as an early enrollee in early January. The pair played high school football at Madison Central High School in Madison, Miss.

Spencer is currently committed in-state to Southern Mississippi, but clearly has not shut down his recruitment. The 2022 lineman also has offers from Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi State and Central Arkansas.

Giants’ Saquon Barkley still among NFLPA’s top selling players

New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley was among the NFLPA’s top 15 selling players league-wide.

What determines a player’s popularity? How many fans buy their jerseys is one way to tell. On the NFLPA’s recent list of top selling players, there’s one current New York Giant and one former one.

The top 15 among all officially licensed product sold:

  1. Patrick Mahomes II, QB, Kansas City
  2. Tom Brady, QB, New England
  3. Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Dallas
  4. Baker Mayfield, QB, Cleveland
  5. Odell Beckham Jr., WR, Cleveland
  6. Khalil Mack, LB, Chicago
  7. Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay
  8. Dak Prescott, QB, Dallas
  9. Saquon Barkley, RB, New York Giants
  10. JuJu Smith-Schuster, WR, Pittsburgh
  11. Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans
  12. Lamar Jackson, QB, Baltimore
  13. Carson Wentz, QB, Philadelphia
  14. Russell Wilson, QB, Seattle
  15. Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, San Francisco

Beckham’s change of teams form the Giants to the Cleveland Browns surely drove up his sales, while Barkley was a red-hot commodity coming off his stellar rookie season.

How are these numbers arrived at?

The NFLPA Top Player Sales list is the only verified ranking of all officially licensed, NFL player-identified merchandise sold from online and traditional retail outlets as reported by more than 75 NFLPA licensees, such as Fanatics, Outerstuff, Nike, Fathead, FOCO, Funko, Wincraft, and more. NFLPA-licensed product categories include video games; men’s, women’s and youth game jerseys; T-shirts and hoodies; backpacks; wall decals; pennants; collectible figurines; matted and framed photos; bobbleheads; plush; drinkware; and pet products, among others. NFLPA licensees have generated record retail sales in each of the last five years, exceeding $1.6 billion during the 2018 season.

Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones is No. 27 on the list. Jason Witten, who left the game for year in 2018 for the broadcast booth only to return this season, is No. 40. Rob Gronkowski retired before the season and clocked in at No. 48.

Duke Tobin again stresses anything is on the table with No. 1 pick

The Bengals are open to anything with the 2020 NFL draft’s first pick.

[jwplayer k7IO4Yct-ThvAeFxT]

Cincinnati Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin continues to make the media rounds at the 2020 Senior Bowl.

The biggest topic is — of course — the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL draft and LSU quarterback Joe Burrow.

After shooting down rumors the Bengals wouldn’t trade the No. 1 pick, Tobin elaborated more in a new interview with Ian Rapoport on his RapSheet + Friends podcast.

“Right now, I would be open to leaving everything on the table because we haven’t decided yet. … (We’re) figuring out how to best use the capital we’ve ‘earned.’ ”

“Earned” is a funny way of putting it but the point stands — it’s entirely too early for the Bengals to finalize what they want to do in the draft. Tobin went on to stress he’s simply not comfortable eliminating options this early in the process.

While there is a semblance of “what else would Tobin say?” here, this is also simply the truth in mid-January. Media will ask about the eventual outcome and Tobin will answer truthfully.

But this response also signals to teams that the phone lines will remain open throughout the process until told otherwise. And for a prospect like Burrow, the trade return would be historic.

In other words, the Bengals would be foolish not to listen. That’s part of the long process here, so they will.

Panthers meet with South Carolina DT Javon Kinlaw

According to a report by Alaina Getzenberg at the Charlotte Observer, Kinlaw says that he’s met briefly with the team and likes the idea of getting drafted by them.

All eyes are on Mobile, Alabama this week in preparation for Saturday’s Senior Bowl. The Panthers have a contingent of decision makers on hand to get a look at some of the top prospects in the 2020 NFL draft class.

One of the best is a local product: South Carolina defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw. According to a report by Alaina Getzenberg at the Charlotte Observer, Kinlaw says that he’s met briefly with the team and likes the idea of getting drafted by them.

Before Panthers/Gamecocks fans get too excited, they should keep in mind that at All-Star games like this most teams will talk with all of the top prospects, so we can’t look into any one meeting too much.

That said, Kinlaw (6-foot-6, 310 pounds) would make an excellent fit if some of Carolina’s aging DTs leave in free agency or get cut.

In 29 career college games, he posted 10 sacks, 17 tackles for a loss, three forced fumbles and eight pass breakups. Kinlaw is one of eight defensive line prospects we’ve identified as potential targets for the team in this year’s draft.

Tennessee hosts 2022 kicker over the weekend

Tennessee hosts 2022 kicker over the weekend.

Tennessee returns senior kicker Brent Cimaglia in 2020.

Cimaglia converted on 23 of his 27 attempts in 2019. He is one of the top returning kickers in the SEC, but the Vols are already planning for the future when it comes to placekicking.

Tennessee hosted kicker Will Bettridge on campus over the weekend, in hopes to reel in the Miami, Fla. native for the 2022 recruiting class.

Rated as the No. 10 kicker in the country in his class by the Kohl’s kicking service, Bettridge knocked through four of his four attempts during his sophomore season with Gulliver Prep.

In a weekend where Bettridge visited Auburn, South Carolina and Tennessee, the rising high school junior is beginning to attract looks from top programs around the country.

Frank Lampard will greet former foe Mikel Arteta at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, with his Chelsea team hoping to overcome Arsenal for the third consecutive encounter in Week 24.

The Gunners surrendered late in a bitter 2-1 loss at home to Chelsea in December, and the Blues return home midweek chasing a third straight victory at the Bridge in all competitions.

Chelsea vs. Arsenal

  • When: Tuesday, January 21
  • Time: 3:15 p.m. ET
  • TV: NBCSN
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

This maiden meeting between Lampard and Arteta pits two derby giants struggling for consistency against one another in a test that’s likely to have big ramifications on the race for European qualification. Chelsea lies in fourth and boasts a five-point cushion over their nearest threat, Manchester United, while the Gunners sit 10 points below in 10th place and have won twice in their last 15 league games.

Arsenal makes the short trip to west London after drawing its last two games, buckling late at home to Sheffield United on Saturday when the Blades will argue they deserved the 1-1 result.

Jorginho and Tammy Abraham each struck in the final seven minutes at the Emirates Stadium three weeks ago to devastate the host, who had led since the 13th minute following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s breakthrough.

Arsenal’s captain is suspended for the midweek matchup, and Gabriel Martinelli looks ready to again be in attack mode after he scored his second goal in four Premier League starts against Sheffield. Meanwhile, Lampard said in a press conference that star Christian Pulisic will be out for a few weeks.

Emerging right-back star Reece James is in doubt for the home fixture after he limped off in the 75th minute at St. James’ Park. Marcos Alonso is nearing fitness and could beat Emerson to the left-back slot, with Cesar Azpilicueta likely to return at right-back if James misses out. Sead Kolasinac and Reiss Nelson will miss the clash with thigh and hamstring injuries, respectively.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos could return in central defense after missing Saturday’s draw due to illness, while Kieran Tierney and Calum Chambers remain sidelined.

Chelsea has defeated Arsenal in seven of its last eight Premier League meetings and Lampard will seek to prove himself as the managerial prodigy of the new class.

2019 Saints Season in Review: Wide receiver Keith Kirkwood

We continue our New Orleans Saints season reviews with wide reciever Keith Kirkwood, who missed much of the 2019 season on injured reserve.

[jwplayer bdu17ZTU-ThvAeFxT]

We continue our end of season reviews at Saints Wire with wide reciever Keith Kirkwood. Kirkwood is entering his third year in the NFL, which started as a practice squad call-up back in 2018. During that 2018 season campaign, the rookie wide receiver played in just eight games but finished the year third on the wide receiver corps in receptions and yards, and was second in touchdown receptions.

After a disappointing 2019 campaign waylaid by a serious hamstring injury, Kirkwood will spend this next offseason rebuilding his value in hopes he can make an impact next season.

Level of Play in 2019

Expectations were high heading into Kirkwood’s 2019 season, and he looked to have an expanded role in the offense. Instead, during Week 1 against the Houston Texans, Kirkwood exited the game after 12 snaps and would never return to the field in the 2019 season. During those 12 snaps, Kirkwood was not targeted, and therefore we don’t have even the slimmest of sample sizes to work from in regards to his performance. However, he did try to return from the injured reserve late in the season, but ultimately the Saints decided to hold him back after some sort of setback.

What to expect in 2020

Kirkwood will be an exclusive rights free agent this offseason. That means he can play with the Saints on a one-year minimum salary (about $650,000) or sit out a year entirely. New Orleans will likely keep him around for another year, with hopes of a resurgence from the young wide receiver.

Prior to the 2019 season, the Saints viewed Kirkwood in high regard. He lined up as the stand-in for Michael Thomas during the superstar’s brief training camp holdout. Kirkwood has shown a knack for converting first downs, and in 2018 averaged 14.5 yards per reception.

At Kirkwood’s best, he provides a great option in the passing game with a ceiling that could see him be a number two-type receiver behind Thomas. Realistically, he will compete for the a spot on the depth chart with Tre’Quan Smith and Lil’Jordan Humphrey. However, his sample size has been limited the last two seasons, with 2019 being all but non-existent which makes any type of projections tough. Kirkwood should hope to put together a solid 2020 campaign that will have the Saints thinking hard about his long term future with the team.

Titans sign multiple players to futures contracts

Here’s a look at the list released yesterday.

The Tennessee Titans have no shortage of decisions to think about now that the offseason has started.

The team did make some moves on Monday, signing a number of players to futures contracts.

Those players included quarterback Logan Woodside, defensive end Amani Bledsoe, running back Dalyn Dawkins, linebacker Nigel Harris, tight end Parker Hesse, center Daniel Munyer, defensive back Kareem Orr, offensive lineman David Quessenberry, wide receiver Trevion Thompson and running back Shaun Wilson.

Here’s a look at the list released yesterday.

Each of those players saw time on Tennessee’s practice squad during the season.

[lawrence-related id=24569]

Running back Dalyn Dawkins is one of the most likely of those to land a roster spot in the 2020 season, especially if the team parts ways with rusher Dion Lewis.

Dawkins was in action for two regular season games, recording 26 rushing yards on 11 carries.

Woodside and the quarterback position overall could be an interesting one to watch as well, given how unclear things still are with the future of Ryan Tannehill.

After dismantling the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers are back in the Super Bowl for the first time since 2012. The Niners are 5-1 in the big game and can match the Steelers and Patriots for a record-tying sixth Super Bowl title, so let’s go down mostly Montana memory lane to look at their SB results.

Super Bowl XVI (1982)

(Manny Rubio-USA TODAY Sports)

How old-school was this SB? Well, it was played at the Silverdome in Detroit, Diana Ross sang the national anthem and the halftime show was themed: Up with People presents “Salute to the 1960s and Motown”.

Awesome.

Joe Montana, who led the Niners to a 26-21 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, was named MVP even though he threw for only 157 yards and one touchdown.
