Deontay Wilder-Luis Ortiz weigh-in: Wilder 219½, Ortiz 236½

Deontay Wilder and Luis Ortiz on Friday weighed 219½ and 236½, respectively, for Saturday’s fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS – Deontay Wilder was expected to be a little heavier in the rematch than he was in his first fight with Luis Ortiz, Ortiz a little lighter. And that’s how it played out.

Wilder on Friday weighed 219½ pounds, almost five pounds more than he weighed when they fought in Mach of last year. Ortiz, who reportedly trained like a mad man, weighed 236½. That’s almost five less than he weighed in the first fight.

They meet again Saturday at the MGM Grand on Fox Pay-Per-View.

Wilder, who stopped Ortiz in 10 rounds the first time around, doesn’t think the weight will make much of a difference.

“He knows what happened the first time. He knows what will happen the second time,” Wilder said on the stage moments after weighing in.

Wilder weighed 223 for his last fight, a first-round knockout of Dominic Breazeale in May. Ortiz weighed 238¾ against Christian Hammer in March, when Ortiz won by a wide decision.

In other fights, Leo Santa Cruz and Miguel Flores weighed 129½ and the limit of 130, respectively, for their junior lightweight title fight. Santa Cruz is attempting to win a title in a fourth division.

In a scheduled junior featherweight bout, Julio Ceja weighed 126½, way over the 122-pound limit. His opponent, Brandon Figueroa, weighed 122. It wasn’t clear how officials intended to proceed.

And, in a bantamweight title eliminator, Luis Nery weighed 119, a pound over the limit. He had a few hours to lose the extra weight. His opponent, Emmanuel Rodriguez, weighed 118.

Florida Atlantic (7-3) vs. UTSA (4-6) Game Preview

The Owls are still in the fight for the Conference USA East title.

They need to beat UTSA and take out Southern Miss, and hope for Marshall to lose to Charlotte or FIU to close things out.

FAU doesn’t make mistakes, it does a great job of taking the ball away, and the offense has the passing attack to take over and put this way. UTSA doesn’t have nearly enough offense to keep up.

FAU will start out balanced and with the passing attack working, and then the ground attack will take over against a struggling Roadrunner defensive front that can get behind the line, but is allowing over 200 rushing yards per game.

Being +3 in turnover margin – expect a few late picks when UTSA tries throwing to get back into the game – will help the Owls turn this into a bit of a blowout late.

Cage Warriors 111 results: Nathias Frederick turns up power, stops James Webb to claim title

Nathias Frederick exploded into action late in Round 4 to stop middleweight champion James Webb at Cage Warriors 111 in London.

LONDON – [autotag]Nathias Frederick[/autotag] produced a thrilling finale of flying fists and knees to stop [autotag]James Webb[/autotag] and capture the Cage Warriors middleweight title in their championship rematch at Cage Warriors 111 on Friday night.

The first meeting between the pair ended in a draw after Frederick fell foul of point deductions for an illegal spike on the champion, while Webb bemoaned the judging that saw him only scrape a draw, despite the scorecard sanctions handed to his opponent.

It meant a rematch was essential, and the pair met in a grueling encounter in the main event at Indigo at The O2 that looked set to go all the way to the judges’ scorecards once again. But Frederick had other ideas.

The Birmingham-based middleweight – a teammate of Leon and Fabian Edwards at Team Renegade – looked to find a home for his strikes early in each stanza, but found himself under intense pressure from Webb’s grinding wrestling-heavy approach as the champion looked to wear heavy on the challenger throughout the first three rounds.

But heading into the fourth frame, Webb’s gas tank started to run dry, and Frederick took full advantage. And, after being shoved against the fence for long spells, Frederick came to life and unleashed a blistering volley of strikes that overwhelmed Webb, who covered up against the cage.

With Frederick ceaselessly unloading heavy-handed punches and punishing knees, referee Rich Mitchell stepped in to call a stop to the fight with just one second remaining in the penultimate round.

Bukauskas calls for UFC chance after powerful TKO finish

In the night’s co-main event, light heavyweight champion [autotag]Modestas Bukauskas[/autotag] scored a decisive stoppage victory to complete his first title defense, then revealed that he had recovered from a pre-fight scare after dislocating his left knee just three weeks before the fight.

Lithuanian-born, England-based Bukauskas finished [autotag]Riccardo Nosiglia[/autotag] inside a round with a salvo of powerful elbows to cement his position as the organization’s premier 205-pounder, then called on Dana White and the UFC matchmakers Sean Shelby and Mick Maynard to give him a chance at the big time.

“I’m ready for the UFC!” he declared. “Please give me my shot! Please give me the chance to show I’m ready for the world stage!”

Burnell boxes clever to claim dominant decision win

Cage Warriors featherweight champion [autotag]Mads Burnell[/autotag] is well known for his submission skills, but in his main card non-title matchup with [autotag]Steve Aimable[/autotag] he showcased his educated hands in an impressive display of his boxing skills.

After a dominant round of striking from the Dane, Aimable came storming back at the start of Round 2 with some solid shots of his own, and a big uppercut briefly appeared to stun the reigning 145-pound champ. But Burnell came firing back with well-placed shots as he ripped Aimable to the head and body with strong, accurate punches.

Eventually, Aimable was forced to switch tactics, but his attempted pick-up and slam ended up with Burnell threatening with his go-to submission – the Japanese necktie – before eventually finishing the round in top position, landing strikes.

Burnell continued to outbox Aimable through Round 3, using his superior accuracy and smart head movement to land cleanly while avoiding Aimable’s best shots. Then, with two minutes remaining, the Dane took the fight to the mat once again and maintained top position to see out the remaining seconds of the fight, and a landslide victory on the scorecards with scores of 30-26 across the board.

Santos stuns Lohore in war of welterweight contenders

In the main card opener, Germany-based Brazilian [autotag]Joilton Santos Lutterbach[/autotag] scored a quickfire finish as he stopped former BAMMA champion [autotag]Alex Lohore[/autotag] in just 27 seconds before taunting his still-stunned opponent in celebration.

Santos landed a left-hook, right-kick combination twice in a row before stunning Lohore with a third left hook that sent him to the canvas, where he followed up with a vicious salvo of ground strikes to seal the victory.

And, after such a clinical finish, the Brazilian may well find himself right at the front of the queue to face the reigning Cage Warriors 170-pound champion, Scotland’s Ross Houston.

Cage Warriors 111 main card results:

  • Nathias Frederick def. James Webb via TKO (punches and knees) – Round 4, 4:59
  • Modestas Bukauskas def. Riccardo Nosiglia via TKO (elbows) – Round 1, 3:31
  • Mads Burnell def. Steve Aimable via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-26)
  • Joilton Santos Lutterbach def. Alex Lohore via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 0:30

Report: Tom Brady to play Sunday despite questionable status on injury report

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was limited in Friday’s practice, but will play against the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple reports.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was limited in practice on Friday, making his status for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys questionable.

But, and perhaps as expected, multiple reports have surfaced saying Brady will play on Sunday. It appears the injury is not serious.

Middle Tennessee (3-7) vs. Old Dominion (1-9) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Middle Tennessee appeared to have everything set up for a late run to bowl eligibility, and instead, it handed Rice its first win of the season.

The Blue Raiders can’t be awful enough to lose to another team in desperate need of a win, can they?

Old Dominion slipped by Norfolk State to start the year, and that’s been it, losing nine straight ever since.

The Monarchs are dead last in the nation in total offense, they don’t have any sort of an efficient passing game, and the offensive line isn’t doing enough to give the skill parts time to work.

Middle Tennessee won’t lose the turnover battle like it did last week, and it’ll run just well enough to settle things down and get back on the winning track … but a week too late.

The opportunities will be there, but ODU won’t be able to move the ball well enough.

Mike Evans just barely made it to 1,000 yards in 2017

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans has a chance to make history in Week 12.

Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans has a shot at making history against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. With just seven more receiving yards, Evans will join Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss as the only other play in NFL history to start his career with six-straight 1,000-yard seasons.

It’s an accomplishment that certainly deserves recognition, especially when you consider that Evans’ streak nearly came to an end in 2017 when he played in just 15 games and totaled 1,001 yards on the season. What’s impressive is that Evans had just one game that year where he had over 100 yards — Week 16 against the Carolina Panthers (107).

Here’s a breakdown of how many 100-plus yard games Evans has had each season, along with his total yards for that year.

2014: 3 (1,051)

2015: 5 (1,206)

2016: 4 (1,321)

2017: 1 (1001)

2018: 8 (1,524)

Evans clawed his way to that 1,000-yard season in 2017, proof of just how great he is. He’s had three 100-plus yard games so far this season to go along with seven touchdowns.

The last time Evans faced the Falcons back in Week 17 of the 2018 season, he finished the game with six receptions for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Atlanta got the last laugh, however, downing the Bucs 34-32.

UTEP (1-9) vs. New Mexico State (1-9) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Can UTEP finally get another win? It’s been a rough eight-game run with a few tight battles, and no victories since beating Houston Baptist in the opener.

New Mexico State beat Incarnate Word for its first win of the season, but the offense hasn’t been consistent and the defense was getting hammered way too hard before dealing with the FCS team.

UTEP’s offense is miserable on third downs, there’s no pressure in the backfield, and it doesn’t have anything it can rely on offensively, but now it gets someone its own size.

New Mexico State dinks and dunks, UTEP takes more shots down the field, and when it comes to running games, it’s about dead even in mediocrity.

The biggest difference overall between these two bad teams? New Mexico State turns the ball over, and UTEP doesn’t.

This will come down to the mistakes, and the Aggies will make more of them.
