Cage Warriors 123 results: Matthew Bonner taps Nathias Frederick to become new middleweight champion

Check out the main card results of Cage Warriors 123, which took place on Thursday evening.

Kicking off a trio of events, Cage Warriors 123 took place on Thursday evening with a title fight in the middleweight division.

The event took place at York Hall in London, England, featuring a main event bout between [autotag]Nathias Frederick[/autotag] and [autotag]Matthew Bonner[/autotag] for the middleweight title. The main card aired on UFC Fight Pass.

After dropping his first two professional bouts, Frederick (9-3-1), went on a tear of nine wins with one draw, which included picking up the middleweight title at Cage Warriors 111. On Thursday, he looked to defend his title for the second time by picking up a win over Bonner (10-6-1), who entered the cage on a three-fight win streak.

Bonner, of course, would have his say in the matter.

In this striker versus grappler matchup, there was no secret to each fighter’s game plan. Throughout the first round, Bonner proved to be a problem in the clinch and on the mat. For a majority of the opening frame, the challenger was able to dictate the action. He achieved full mount after a takedown and began throwing heavy punches, but Frederick was able to see the end of the round without taking too much damage.

With the action back on the feet to begin the second, the champ did his best to land hard strikes while defending takedowns. At one point, he pressed Bonner down to one knee against the fence and threw an illegal knee. The referee decided it was serious enough to deduct a point from Frederick for the strike.

When the action resumed, Bonner continued to have success grappling, ending the second round on top of the champ.

Frederick started the third round looking to change the course of the fight by turning up the pressure. He had success finding home for strikes and defended takedowns well for the first half of the round, but Bonner was able to turn the tides and end the third round on top of Frederick yet again.

The champ quickly ended up in Bonner’s guard early in the fourth round, where he would land a few heavy punches before his opponent was able to reverse position. Frederick threatened with a kimura, but used it as a sweep to return to the feet. Moments later, the fight would return to the ground with Frederick on top looking to land strikes.

Out of nowhere, Bonner slipped to Frederick’s back and sunk in a deep rear-naked choke to get the tap to become the new middleweight champion.

Bonner’s win streak extends to four in a row in impressive fashion, earning the title of Cage Warriors middleweight champion in the process.

The full results of the Cage Warriors 123 card are below:

  •  Matthew Bonner def. Nathias Frederick via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 4, 4:16
  • Christian Duncan def. Will Currie via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Liam Gittins def. Emrah Sommez via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 2, 4:38
  • Sam Creasey def. Aaron Aby via unanimous decision (30-25, 30-25, 30-26)
  • Mick Stanton def. George Smith via TKO (punches) – Round 2, 3:45

Video: Check out Nathias Frederick’s left hook from hell at Cage Warriors 118

Nathias Frederick may have struggled with his footing in the main event of Cage Warriors 118, but there was clearly nothing wrong with his hands.

Some fighters are cerebral assassins; cool, calm, collected technicians who work out your style, find an opening and exploit it with surgical precision. Then there are fighters who are all-out berserkers who attack their prey like the Tasmanian Devil until their opponent is left out cold on the canvas.

After Cage Warriors 118, it’s safe to say [autotag]Nathias Frederick[/autotag] falls into the latter category.

The Cage Warriors middleweight champion won the title from James Webb last year through his relentless aggression, and was expected to deliver more of the same against Jamie Richardson in the main event of Cage Warriors 118 on Friday night.

It didn’t go completely according to plan for the Team Renegade training partner of Leon and Fabian Edwards, however. But, after dealing with a few early slip-ups (quite literally), “Notorious” showed us why he’s one of the scariest men on the European scene right now.

Frederick showed us his power early by decking Richardson with a huge overhand right with his very first punch of the fight, but he then found himself fighting against two opponents: Richardson and the fighting surface, which seemed to be uniquely slick for him, despite no other fighter appearing to have the same issue throughout the evening.

It was clearly affecting Frederick, though, and after a tough end to Round 2, he was clearly frustrated on his stool as he readied himself for the third round. When the action resumed, it didn’t take long for him to make his mark.

After backing “Young Gun” against the fence, Frederick let fly with one of the biggest left hooks of 2020 as he connected flush on the challenger’s chin, sending him falling, face-first, into the canvas.

It was a thunderous, brutal knockout, and rather than celebrate Frederick immediately apologized to everyone at cageside for his innocent, but unnecessary, follow-up shot as referee Rich Mitchell dived in to stop the fight.

It was a spectacular way to end a night packed with fun fights, and it begged the question, “If Frederick can do that while struggling to keep his footing, what on earth could he do if he had proper grip?”

Cage Warriors’ September triple-header continues to take shape, with a middleweight title fight confirmed for the second leg of the promotion’s three-night run.

Middleweight champion [autotag]Nathias Frederick[/autotag] will put his 185-pound title on the line against [autotag]Jamie Richardson[/autotag] at Cage Warriors 115, which takes place Friday, Sept. 25 at the BEC Arena, Manchester. The event will be streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.

After losing his first two bouts as a pro, Frederick (8-2-1) has gone unbeaten, winning eight and drawing one of his last nine. He captured middleweight gold in his last appearance inside the Cage Warriors cage as he defeated James Webb via fourth-round TKO at Cage Warriors 111 last November. His planned title defense against Andreas Michailidis in April was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, and Michailidis subsequently moved on to join the UFC.

Now the 37-year-old from Birmingham will look to register the first successful defense of his title against 24-year-old “Young Gun” Richardson (9-5), who heads into the bout riding a three-fight win streak, thanks to victories over Phill Wells (twice) and Matthew Bonner.

“These guys never take a backward step,” said Cage Warriors president Graham Boylan, via press release.

“We knew this one had ‘Fight of the Night’ written all over it from the moment it was signed. Styles make fights, and I’m predicting carnage on Sept. 25 – and the stakes are even higher with the title on the line.”

Cage Warriors 115 confirmed fights include:

[autotag]Nathias Frederick[/autotag] (8-2-1) will put his 185-pound title on the line for the first time when he meets challenger [autotag]Andreas Michailidis[/autotag] (12-3) at Cage Warriors 114, the promotion announced Monday.

Cage Warriors 114 takes place April 18 at Arena Birmingham in England. The event streams on UFC Fight Pass.

Frederick challenged James Webb for the title in June 2019 in his debut with the promotion, but had to settle for a majority draw and Webb retained the belt. But they rematched in November at Cage Warriors 111, and Frederick put Webb away with a TKO with one second left in the fourth round to win the title. The victory put Frederick’s unbeaten streak at nine fights.

Michailidis, from Greece, will be making his Cage Warriors debut. He has three straight wins and victories in seven of his past eight fights. In 2019, the 31-year-old had first-round knockout wins over Marcel Fortuna at Titan FC 54 and Arymarcel Santos at a Global Legion FC event. He has 11 of his 12 career wins by finish.

The Cage Warriors 114 lineup includes:

  • Champ Nathias Frederick vs. Andreas Michailidis – for middleweight title

Video: Watch the best of Cage Warriors from 2019 in their end-of-year highlight reel

Recap a memorable year of action from European promotion Cage Warriors in their 2019 highlight film.

European promotion Cage Warriors has forged a well-earned reputation as one of the key regional promotions for fighters looking to launch their careers to the world stage.

The London-based organization has seen 93 of its fighters graduate to the UFC over the years, including former UFC champions Conor McGregor, Michael Bisping and Joanna Jedrzejczyk, and continues to produce UFC-ready talent, with former champions Jack Shore and Nathaniel Wood tipped for stardom on the big stage in the months and years ahead.

The promotion had a big year in 2019, holding 11 events in total, including an historic night at the iconic Hammersmith Apollo in London for “Cage Warriors 106: Night of Champions” and a return to the BT Sport studios for their “Cage Warriors: Unplugged 2” event that featured a one night tournament that crowned its new bantamweight champion, [autotag]Jack Cartwright[/autotag].

As well as bantamweight, the organization crowned new champions at flyweight, featherweight, lightweight, middleweight and light heavyweight, as [autotag]Samir Faiddine[/autotag], [autotag]Mads Burnell[/autotag], [autotag]Jai Herbert[/autotag], [autotag]Nathias Frederick[/autotag] and [autotag]Modestas Bukauskas[/autotag] all captured championship gold in their respective weight classes.

And Scotland’s undefeated welterweight champion [autotag]Ross Houston[/autotag] held on to his 170-pound title after his epic back-and-forth war with interim champion [autotag]Nicolas Dalby[/autotag] was ruled a no contest after the cage floor became flooded with blood from both men after one of the most punishing contests ever seen inside the Cage Warriors cage.

Cage Warriors 111 results: Nathias Frederick turns up power, stops James Webb to claim title

Nathias Frederick exploded into action late in Round 4 to stop middleweight champion James Webb at Cage Warriors 111 in London.

LONDON – [autotag]Nathias Frederick[/autotag] produced a thrilling finale of flying fists and knees to stop [autotag]James Webb[/autotag] and capture the Cage Warriors middleweight title in their championship rematch at Cage Warriors 111 on Friday night.

The first meeting between the pair ended in a draw after Frederick fell foul of point deductions for an illegal spike on the champion, while Webb bemoaned the judging that saw him only scrape a draw, despite the scorecard sanctions handed to his opponent.

It meant a rematch was essential, and the pair met in a grueling encounter in the main event at Indigo at The O2 that looked set to go all the way to the judges’ scorecards once again. But Frederick had other ideas.

The Birmingham-based middleweight – a teammate of Leon and Fabian Edwards at Team Renegade – looked to find a home for his strikes early in each stanza, but found himself under intense pressure from Webb’s grinding wrestling-heavy approach as the champion looked to wear heavy on the challenger throughout the first three rounds.

But heading into the fourth frame, Webb’s gas tank started to run dry, and Frederick took full advantage. And, after being shoved against the fence for long spells, Frederick came to life and unleashed a blistering volley of strikes that overwhelmed Webb, who covered up against the cage.

With Frederick ceaselessly unloading heavy-handed punches and punishing knees, referee Rich Mitchell stepped in to call a stop to the fight with just one second remaining in the penultimate round.

Bukauskas calls for UFC chance after powerful TKO finish

In the night’s co-main event, light heavyweight champion [autotag]Modestas Bukauskas[/autotag] scored a decisive stoppage victory to complete his first title defense, then revealed that he had recovered from a pre-fight scare after dislocating his left knee just three weeks before the fight.

Lithuanian-born, England-based Bukauskas finished [autotag]Riccardo Nosiglia[/autotag] inside a round with a salvo of powerful elbows to cement his position as the organization’s premier 205-pounder, then called on Dana White and the UFC matchmakers Sean Shelby and Mick Maynard to give him a chance at the big time.

“I’m ready for the UFC!” he declared. “Please give me my shot! Please give me the chance to show I’m ready for the world stage!”

Burnell boxes clever to claim dominant decision win

Cage Warriors featherweight champion [autotag]Mads Burnell[/autotag] is well known for his submission skills, but in his main card non-title matchup with [autotag]Steve Aimable[/autotag] he showcased his educated hands in an impressive display of his boxing skills.

After a dominant round of striking from the Dane, Aimable came storming back at the start of Round 2 with some solid shots of his own, and a big uppercut briefly appeared to stun the reigning 145-pound champ. But Burnell came firing back with well-placed shots as he ripped Aimable to the head and body with strong, accurate punches.

Eventually, Aimable was forced to switch tactics, but his attempted pick-up and slam ended up with Burnell threatening with his go-to submission – the Japanese necktie – before eventually finishing the round in top position, landing strikes.

Burnell continued to outbox Aimable through Round 3, using his superior accuracy and smart head movement to land cleanly while avoiding Aimable’s best shots. Then, with two minutes remaining, the Dane took the fight to the mat once again and maintained top position to see out the remaining seconds of the fight, and a landslide victory on the scorecards with scores of 30-26 across the board.

Santos stuns Lohore in war of welterweight contenders

In the main card opener, Germany-based Brazilian [autotag]Joilton Santos Lutterbach[/autotag] scored a quickfire finish as he stopped former BAMMA champion [autotag]Alex Lohore[/autotag] in just 27 seconds before taunting his still-stunned opponent in celebration.

Santos landed a left-hook, right-kick combination twice in a row before stunning Lohore with a third left hook that sent him to the canvas, where he followed up with a vicious salvo of ground strikes to seal the victory.

And, after such a clinical finish, the Brazilian may well find himself right at the front of the queue to face the reigning Cage Warriors 170-pound champion, Scotland’s Ross Houston.

Cage Warriors 111 main card results:

  • Nathias Frederick def. James Webb via TKO (punches and knees) – Round 4, 4:59
  • Modestas Bukauskas def. Riccardo Nosiglia via TKO (elbows) – Round 1, 3:31
  • Mads Burnell def. Steve Aimable via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-26)
  • Joilton Santos Lutterbach def. Alex Lohore via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 0:30

Cage Warriors 111: Three titles on the line on stacked card in London

Three titles are on the line when the top European promotion returns to London on Friday for Cage Warriors 111.

Top European promotion Cage Warriors returns to its regular London home at the Indigo at The O2 for Cage Warriors 111, and the promotion is bringing a stacked card of fights to the capital Friday.

Three title fights will be on the line, with the headline bout featuring a hotly anticipated rematch of one of the promotion’s most controversial fights of 2019.

Middleweight champion [autotag]James Webb[/autotag] and challenger [autotag]Nathias Frederick[/autotag] battled to a majority draw at Cage Warriors 106 in a fight that saw Frederick (7-2-1 MMA, 0-0-1 CW) deducted a point for an illegal spike that eventually proved crucial on the judges’ scorecards. Without the deduction, Fredericks would have claimed the title, and that knowledge irked Webb (6-1-1 MMA, 4-1-1 CW), who expressed his frustration at the judges’ scoring of the fight. Now the pair will meet in a rematch in a bid to produce a definitive result.

Also on the card, two more fighters who captured titles at Cage Warriors 106 will look to complete maiden title defenses in their returns to London.

Mads Burnell (Dolly Clew / Cage Warriors)

Denmark’s [autotag]Mads Burnell[/autotag] (12-3 MMA, 3-0 CW) produced one of the best submissions of the year to capture the featherweight title, and will hope for a similarly impressive finish when he puts his title on the line against England’s [autotag]Steve Aimable[/autotag] (14-5 MMA, 4-2 CW).

And England-based Lithuanian [autotag]Modestas Bukauskas[/autotag] (9-2 MMA, 4-1 CW) will look to cement his position as Cage Warriors’ premier 205-pounder by defeating Italian [autotag]Riccardo Nosiglia[/autotag] (8-1 MMA, 0-0 CW).

The fight card also features the return of former featherweight champion [autotag]Paddy Pimblett[/autotag] (14-3 MMA, 9-3 CW), who aims to kick-start a run toward the 155-pound title after moving up to lightweight. He takes on short-notice replacement and former “TUF” finalist [autotag]Joe Giannetti[/autotag] (8-2-1 MMA, 0-0 CW).

And former BAMMA welterweight champion [autotag]Alex Lohore[/autotag] (18-4 MMA, 3-1 CW) has his sights set on championship gold at 170 pounds. He takes on [autotag]Joilton Santos Lutterbach[/autotag] (30-8 MMA, 1-0 CW) looking for a performance to catapult himself into a title fight in early 2020.
