Oklahoma in review: DaShaun White, Brian Asamoah stepping up leadership at LB

There was a major void in the middle of Oklahoma’s defense after the 2019 defense. Two returning linebackers are trying to fill it.

There was a major void in the middle of Oklahoma’s defense after the 2019 defense.

It’s no doubt that Kenneth Murray was the heart and soul of the Sooners a year ago. He wore his emotions on his sleeve and the results spoke for themselves.

Grinch described him as the alpha of his first year and the cover boy of Oklahoma’s ‘Speed D’. The target now shifts to a new pair of linebackers who are looking for a big year in 2020.

“I would say DaShaun (White) and I—we’ve taken it upon us to lead that linebacker room to a very great path and I believe we’ve done that job,” said starting linebacker Brian Asamoah the week after the Missouri State game. “Talking about seven guys in the rotation last week, you don’t have that in every linebacker room. So, we’ve done a great job of bringing those guys along with us and telling them that hey, an opportunity may come despite the circumstances. COVID is out there and you’ve got to be ready for your opportunity and preparation.”

It’s one thing to be a leader, it’s another to be a great player and the leader.

Asamoah thinks he’s ready to be both.

“Definitely the mental aspect,” he said. “Last year I was just focusing on trying to do my job and trying to figure out the defense in my first year. This year, I know what everybody in front is doing, everybody in the back is doing and then what I’m doing and my play-side backer next to me so I would say the improvement came mentally.”

Alongside him is two-year starter DaShaun White, who Murray called his little brother last season.

Grinch has spoke adamantly about him needing to be better than a year ago. White feels like he took the same jump Asamoah spoke about, but for different reasons.

“Year one just felt like a lot of making sure you get your guy,” White said prior to the season. “If you’re supposed to be in the C gap, be in the C gap. If you’re supposed to spill the guard, spill the guard where you’re supposed to spill the guard. I feel personally a lot this year that it’s like … I feel like I’m sort of gaining my personality as a player and who I am and things that I’m really good at. It’s not just about being in your gap. It’s about being in your gap and being in the backfield two yards, ready to make a play.”

A wild card, though, has emerged for Oklahoma at linebacker.

David Ugwoegbu was an edge rusher playing RUSH linebacker for Grinch in 2019 oozed potential at the position. After the injury to Caleb Kelly, he was moved inside to help with depth at the position.

Ugwoegbu looked the part in the first game against Missouri State. He clearly has a long ways to go, but there was some praise about him before the season started.

“He’s doing really well,” White said back then. “He’s got size. He moves better than a lot of people give him credit for. He has a lot of productive. He’s one of those guys that I feel like, ‘We’ve got to find him a spot.’ Because he’s just that good. And he can play so many different positions well. I’m excited for him to be inside. He’s making plays, he’s flying around, he’s picking it up. He’s fast, too. Shout out to him. I’m excited for him. I think it will be a good thing for him.”

LSU’s offensive keys to the game vs. Mississippi State

Here’s a look at what the LSU Tigers must accomplish on offense to defeat the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the season opener.

The LSU Tigers finally open the 2020 college football season on Saturday as the Mississippi State Bulldogs come to Baton Rouge. As the Tigers look to defend their national championship, they do so with a host of new starters on offense.

The Bulldogs could prove to be a tough matchup for LSU’s opener for a couple of reasons: quarterback K.J. Costello and new head coach Mike Leach and his high-powered Air-Raid offense.

That means the pressure will be on LSU’s new-look offense and quarterback Myles Brennan.

LSU had the nation’s top offense in 2019, led by Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow at quarterback, All-American wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase and first-round picks Justin Jefferson and Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

[lawrence-related id=11078]

All of those players are gone, and the Tigers are also replacing four starters on the offensive line.

Here are two things LSU can do to in order to start the 2020 season 1-0.

Establish a running game

It sounds cliche. Everyone wants to establish the running game and then be able to move the ball through the air.

For LSU, running back is a position where the team has plenty of depth and talent.

Chris Curry, Tyrion Davis-Price and John Emery should all see plenty of time on Saturday. If say Curry starts out hot, the Tigers and offensive coordinator Steve Ensinger should go with the hot hand.

It’s important for the Tigers to try and run the ball early to ease Brennan into the game.

Mississippi State allowed opponents to rush for over 152 yards per game one year ago and allowed 4.4 yards per attempt. The Bulldogs will have several new starters on defense, including a new defensive coordinator in Zach Arnett.

How did every NFL team miss James Robinson?

Undrafted free agent James Robinson is making the rest of the NFL pay for letting him go undrafted

There were 255 players selected in the 2020 NFL Draft, and James Robinson was not one of them.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had 12 of those selections, and didn’t think it necessary to spend one of them on Robinson. Little did they know that just few months later, they’d be choosing him over Leonard Fournette, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2017 draft.

Robinson stole the starting job in the Jags’ backfield and hasn’t looked back, racking up 339 yards of total offense and three touchdowns through the first three games of the season.

He’s already looking like a league-winner for fantasy football owners who were clever enough to snatch him off the waiver wire before the season:

His success likely comes as no surprise to anyone who faced him in college. A first-team FCS All-American in 2019, Robinson rushed for 1,899 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior. For his four-year career with the Redbirds, Robinson averaged over 1,100 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns per season, rushing for nearly 100 yards per game.

Still, his impressive college resume wasn’t for the 5-9, 219-pounder to impress the NFL, at least not enough to warrant a selection on draft weekend. Instead, the Jags hit the jackpot of undrafted free agency.

So much for the whole “inferior competition” argument about those FCS players.

While there will be those who still believe that you have to spend an early draft pick to find a difference-maker at running back, Robinson is just the latest example of the theory that productive backs can be found without investing a draft pick at all.

Updated odds from BetMGM on Mississippi State vs. LSU

The defending champion LSU Tigers finally open the college football season on Saturday as Mississippi State comes to Baton Rouge.

The defending champion LSU Tigers finally open the college football season on Saturday as Mississippi State comes to Baton Rouge.

Both teams look incredibly different this year, as the Tigers lost 14 players to the 2020 NFL Draft alone, on top of undrafted free agent signings and opt-outs ahead of the season, not to mention the many members of the staff who left for new opportunities after the national championship victory over Clemson.

As for the Bulldogs, they’ll look new especially on offense this year, under the guidance of head coach Mike Leach and with former Stanford graduate transfer quarterback K.J. Costello at the helm.

The Tigers opened as 18.5-point favorites earlier this week, according to BetMGM, and, as of 12:00 a.m. ET on Friday, LSU is a 16.5-point favorite.

Stevens: Celts must ‘play every possession like it’s the last possession’

The Boston Celtics have to play each possession as if it were their last according to coach Brad Stevens — and if they don’t down 3-1, it very well could be.

How should the Boston Celtics be treating Game 5 of their East Finals series against the Miami Heat, in which they now trail 3-1 in the best-of-seven series?

“You want to play every possession like it’s the last possession of the game,” suggested Celtics head coach Brad Stevens at the team’s pregame presser when asked if the team should be playing with an air of desperation.

“You want to play with great focus on hitting singles on those possessions and at the same time, missing a shot at the early part of the game isn’t going to make or break the game, so you also have to play competently. You also have to play assertively and aggressive.”

“You can’t play timid, and so I think that there’s a fine line,” he added.

Whether Boston was playing timid, tired, or just terrible in Game 4, if it happens again, it will be the end of their season. But as he typically does, Stevens instead focused on the positive side of the coin.

“Our thing this whole entire experience has been competing with great intentions, and and do your best to stay in the moment and play as well as we can,” he explained.

“We’ve had really good moments, playing all the way up to this point, including in this series. We haven’t had enough of them when it’s mattered most, and I think that that’s where we have to be even more locked in and taking advantage of every possession.”

Do the Celtics have what it takes to force a Game 6?

We’ll soon find out, with tip-off slated for 8:30 pm Eastern Time.
