Ohio State falls out of top spot in race for best 2021 football recruiting class

Ohio State football has officially lost its grip on the top-ranked 2021 recruiting class to this team. It’s hopefully a short-lived drop.

The gap between Ohio State and the rest of the college football when it comes to the 2021 recruiting class has officially shrunk to nill, and then some. While most every other program races to catch up, a familiar foe has officially taken over the No. 1 spot.

Alabama has been an absolute tear recently in pulling in top prospects for the 2021 class lately, and it has done enough now to pull ahead of the Buckeyes in both the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings and ESPN’s Team Recruiting Class Rankings. It’s a small margin, but a margin that exists nonetheless.

So how did it all happen? A couple of things played into it. First and foremost, Nick Saban and the Tide got up off the mat and spun it’s recruiting game over the last few months. Secondly, after a blistering spring, the Buckeyes have cooled off a bit and even losing four-star Tunmise Adelye in the process.

ESPN’s method or ranking classes is far too complicated to get into here, but it has officially boosted the Tide to the top spot. As far as 247Sports is concerned, Ohio State has an overall point total of 298.27, just behind Alabama’s 299.49 aggregate.

But don’t fret Buckeye fans. OSU might get a couple bits of good news over the next week or so with the potential of prospects set to make decisions.

Four-star defensive tackle Tyleik Williams is announcing Thursday at 5 p.m. ET, and that will be followed by four-star tight-end Bennett Christian expected to announce on September 1. Both are considered OSU leans, and any commitment at this point would vault Ohio State back on top as long as Alabama doesn’t pick off another prospect in the process.

The race for the No. 1 spot continues, and although the Buckeyes are clearly still in the thick of it, it’s no longer as much of a probability as it was just a short time ago.
