LSU’s offensive line is one key to avoiding 2020 part two

To avoid a repeat of last year’s 5-5 campaign, the LSU Tigers will need to get some help from the offensive line.

After the loss to the UCLA Bruins on Saturday, the thought of here we go again began to pop into the minds of many. The LSU Tigers were upset by an unranked opponent in the first game of the season. Is this a bump in the road or a sign of things to come?

Offensive lineman Ed Ingram met with the media and the tone wasn’t one by a player that seemed concerned about the team.

“I was talking to a couple of my teammates about this, it’s a very different energy this year,” Ingram stated. “After we lost to Mississippi State, a lot of us kind of turned on each other, but this year everybody is holding each other. Just stay according to plan, trust the process and get it fixed this next weekend.”

That statement seems to confirm but many speculated last year, turmoil in the locker room. If this year is to in fact be different than a season ago, it will start on Saturday night when the Tigers host McNeese State. A game against an FCS opponent that isn’t expected to be a huge challenge for LSU. However, the team will be without their starting tackles on the offensive line.

“Next man up mentality,” Ingram said. “Just those younger guys are going to have to step up and just play. Guys came here for a reason.”

Ingram was very confident that they can get this turned around. The team has the talent to do so, it was never a question of having the players to execute on game day. With any new staff, especially at key coordinator roles, there are growing pains as expected.

One coordinator hasn’t called plays in 12 years, and the other never has called plays. There will be times where the lack of experience will show up. It isn’t only the coaching, as there were plenty of mental errors by the players on Saturday. Getting that cleaned up should be the priority for the entire team. It all starts against McNeese at Tiger Stadium on Saturday night.
