As things stand right now, yes Tom Herman should get at least another season in charge. Using the first-year coordinator excuse is a cheap one but seems fair in this case. Mike Yurcich and Chris Ash barely had any time to get rolling with the team and are adapting on the fly on a weekly basis.
Furthermore, Herman still has time to make up for his mistakes. Texas’ bye week is coming at a crucial time and should reset the team. Coming off bad losses to TCU and Oklahoma should light a fire underneath the Longhorns. As gloomy as things are, there is still a path to the Big 12 championship. Even if it is a narrow one.
The exception to this is if a Kansas 2016 situation develops. If Herman somehow loses in Lawrence this season, it will be a similar scenario to the end of the Charlie Strong era.
At this rate, wins are needed but do not help Herman’s hot seat. Any more losses will pile more pressure on Chris Del Conte to make the move most Texas fans want. However, one more season in 2021 will tell us everything we need to know about Herman.
