It is the $15 million dollar question on everyone’s mind, should Tom Herman return as the Texas Longhorns head coach in 2021?

The $15 million question right now is should Tom Herman get another year. Well simply put he probably should given the buyout that remains on his contract. However, if the school and boosters want a new head coach roaming the sidelines they will find a way to get it done.

While Herman has seen some success, they won their first New Years Six bowl game since 2009 when Colt McCoy led the team to win over Ohio State. He also became the first coach in school history to win his first three bowl games but how much weight does that actually hold? While the Sugar Bowl victory was impressive, wins in the Alamo Bowl and Texas Bowl aren’t exactly something to write home about. Texas should and does expect better from their football team.

Texas has been underachieving for the last decade it seems and Herman is the latest coach who has failed to get them over the hump. Despite winning bowl games, he hasn’t achieved much more than Charlie Strong before him. He almost joined him in the “losing to Kansas” club. An argument could be made that if Strong had Ehlinger, could he have achieved similar success? Possibly.

What it all boils down to is winning. Chris Del Conte did not hire Herman even though he did give him an extension. With the heat surrounding the football program it is very clear. Win the Big 12 Championship this year or you are out. At least that is my summation. Without wins we could see this football team continue to hemorrhage when it comes to recruiting.
