Longhorns Wire Roundtable: Favorite traditions of TX-OU

It’s officially Texas-Oklahoma week. It’s only right that we narrow down our favorite traditions of the Red River Rivalry.

The Red River Rivalry is unlike any other.

There’s of course several other programs on the schedule for Texas and Oklahoma each year, but no meeting carries more history and tradition in the Big 12 than this one.

The rivalry is bitterly emotional and territorial.

It’s a unique atmosphere for fans, coaches and players. There’s a few staples that distance TX-OU week from other major rivalry games. Many fans choose to attend the Texas State Fair prior to the early 11:00 a.m. kickoff, while some attend the game specifically for the Cotton Bowl attendance being split directly down the middle for each side.

For the players, their primary goal is to hoist the Golden Hat at the end of the game. This trophy is kept by the winning school’s athletic department until the next year.

Whether it’s on the field or off the field, you’re bound to have a favorite tradition each year when these two programs meet in October. Longhorns Wire staff each touched on what they look forward to most.
