Longhorns Wire Roundtable: Favorite traditions of TX-OU

It’s officially Texas-Oklahoma week. It’s only right that we narrow down our favorite traditions of the Red River Rivalry.

Cami Griffin – Kickoff, Location, Golden Hat

It’s certainly going to be an odd year for the Red River Rivalry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the pure hatred and passion still exists between the players and each fanbase.

I’m typically not a fan of early 11:00 a.m. CDT kickoff’s when it includes a major rivalry matchup of this nature. However, it’s become a staple tradition for Texas and Oklahoma. There’s something about waking up early with heightened nerves on a Saturday in October to prepare for this battle.

The game is played on a neutral field at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas. When you hear most people speak of “it was about 50/50 attendance” after they attend a particular game — this is the epitome of that. You can see the direct line of burnt orange and crimson split straight down the middle.

Finally, the Golden Hat is a unique tradition between the two programs that I look forward to witnessing at the outcome of the game. Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger has only received this trophy once (2018), but hopefully that changes in 2020.
