Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.
Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.
Today, we will be looking at sophomore running back/quarterback Roschon Johnson.
Roschon Johnson, Running back/Quarterback
Height: 6-2 / Weight: 215
Class: Sophomore
Hometown: Port Neches, Texas
High School: Port Neches Grove
HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 6 dual-threat quarterback / No. 41 in-state
HS ranking (Rivals): Three-star / No. 18 dual-threat quarterback / No. 88 in-state
Analysis: Roschon Johnson become a fan favorite last season, moving to running back before the season opener against Louisiana Tech due to injuries at the position. He ended up staying there all season, being the team’s third-leading rusher.
Making the switch over full time now, Johnson will find himself in a more competitive situation than 2019. Keaontay Ingram will be back and ready to roll this season, while incoming freshman Bijan Robinson is expected to be a star. Even Jordan Whittington could get some carries out of the backfield despite the move to wide receiver. The Longhorns have great depth at running back this season.
Early in the season, Ingram and Johnson should get most of the carries for Texas. The two experienced backs helped the Longhorns finish with 176.5 rushing yards per game last season. Where Johnson could start to lose carries is when Robinson emerges and gets significant playing time.
Johnson will once again be needed in the 2020 season. Playing hero last season, his reliability will earn him carries in Mike Yurich’s offense.
