The Bills officially have a vacancy for a backup behind their starting safety duo.
Dean Marlowe has signed with the Lions. The team announced the move on Thursday but contract terms were not yet disclosed.
Marlowe started his career with the Panthers and moved to the Bills where he spent the past three years. He was the team’s main backup for both Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. In 2020, he had two interceptions during his time on defense.
Recently the Bills have hosted free-agent visits for players in various positions. Some have been defensive backs, perhaps indicating that Marlowe, 28 and an unrestricted free agent, might not return to the team. Among those include former Steelers safety Sean Davis, who went on to sign with the Colts.
Without Marlowe, the current in-house favorite for the Bills’ backup safety spot would be Jaquan Johnson, who also excels as a special teamer.
