Jayson Tatum’s father Justin on taking over as head coach of the NBL’s Ilwarra Hawks

“It was unexpected, taking an assistant coaching job,” said Justin Tatum.

All-NBA Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum‘s father, former Illawara Hawks assistant coach Justin Tatum recently found himself unexpectedly promoted to head coach of his basketball team. The previous head coach was fired after a rough start for the NBL’s Hawks, and the elder Tatum was asked to take over the top job in his stead.

Tatum is thrilled for the opportunity to advance his coaching career and lead the team, even if it came suddenly. “It was unexpected, taking an assistant coaching job; I was hoping to gain my professional career in basketball and unexpecting, was now the head coach,” he said in an interview for the NBL’s official YouTube channel.

“It was a blessing so you know I just want to make sure I take advantage of it.”

The elder Tatum also spoke a bit about his famous son — check it out in the clip embedded above.
