Packers WR Jayden Reed sets team rookie receptions record

Packers WR Jayden Reed, a second-round pick in the 2023 draft, broke Sterling Sharpe’s rookie record for receptions in a season.

With his second reception against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night, wide receiver Jayden Reed surpassed Sterling Sharpe for the Green Bay Packers rookie catch record.

This record held by Sharpe had stood since 1988, when he hauled in 55 receptions for 791 yards and a touchdown.

The reception that broke the record was a quick pass behind the line of scrimmage that went for no gain. But on the very next play, Reed ran a deep post, splitting the Minnesota coverage to get behind the safeties, and Jordan Love hit him for the 33-yard touchdown on a beautiful throw.

Coming into the game, Reed had caught nearly 70 percent of his 78 targets, totaling 592 yards and six touchdowns. Reed’s play, specifically over the second half of the season, has provided a needed spark to the Green Bay passing game.

“He’s just a heck of a competitor,” said Matt LaFleur of Reed. “He’s helped us not only in the pass game obviously, but just getting the ball in his hands on reverses, arounds, whatever it may be, screens. I love how he competes, both in the run game and pass game. He’s made plays when given opportunities.”

Over the course of the season, Reed has become a go-to target for Love and provides the offense with big play potential when the ball is in his hands.
