Jayson Tatum’s father Justin on taking over as head coach of the NBL’s Ilwarra Hawks

“It was unexpected, taking an assistant coaching job,” said Justin Tatum.

All-NBA Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum‘s father, former Illawara Hawks assistant coach Justin Tatum recently found himself unexpectedly promoted to head coach of his basketball team. The previous head coach was fired after a rough start for the NBL’s Hawks, and the elder Tatum was asked to take over the top job in his stead.

Tatum is thrilled for the opportunity to advance his coaching career and lead the team, even if it came suddenly. “It was unexpected, taking an assistant coaching job; I was hoping to gain my professional career in basketball and unexpecting, was now the head coach,” he said in an interview for the NBL’s official YouTube channel.

“It was a blessing so you know I just want to make sure I take advantage of it.”

The elder Tatum also spoke a bit about his famous son — check it out in the clip embedded above.

Celtics’ Jayson Tatum opens up about his complicated relationship with his dad

Tatum believes the experiences he had with his dad made him a tougher NBA player as a result.

Star Boston Celtics swingman Jayson Tatum had an especially tough relationship with his father, Justin, growing up. His dad’s tough love on the basketball court sometimes crossed the line into being abusive. And while the St. Louis native went through some hard times as a result of that behavior from his father, he also believes the experiences with his dad made him a tougher NBA player.

In a recent interview with the eponymous host of the “In Depth with Graham Bensinger” show, the Celtics star opened up about his complicated relationship with Justin Tatum, and how it has changed over time.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear the interview on how his relationship with his father made him who he is today in full.

Jayson Tatum’s dad Justin reacts to his son’s Finals loss with touching message

To the elder Tatum, Jayson’s performance in the postseason was by far the greatest Father’s Day present anyone could ever hope for.

As far as Justin Tatum is concerned, his Father’s Day gift this year came early and was of the variety that simply cannot be bought in stores (no matter what anyone says about the Golden State Warriors‘ payroll), an accomplishment that can only be appreciated fully by a proud dad watching his child competing at the highest level of his chosen vocation.

In a touching Instagram post the elder Tatum penned to honor his son’s monumental season helping lead the Boston Celtics to within two games of winning the storied franchise’s 18th banner, All-NBA Celtics forward Jayson Tatum’s father explained to his son just how proud he was of his accomplishment.

“These past 2 months you gave me the best Fathers Day gift a dad can ask for,” said Tatum’s father in the post.

Jayson Tatum’s father Justin doubted whether the Celtics might make the playoffs early in the 2021-22 NBA season

Needless to say, he’s excited as the rest of us about where they are now.

If you were among the fans of the Boston Celtics who did not see them making it to the NBA Finals while the team slogged through the first half of the 2021-22 season as a .500 ball club, don’t be too hard on yourself — you were far from alone. In fact, even All-NBA Celtics forward Jayson Tatum‘s father Justin wasn’t sure they’d make the postseason, never mind the 2022 Finals.

Speaking with Bally Sports’ Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson recently, the elder Tatum said “I didn’t think they were going to make the playoffs at the beginning of the season. Y’all are bad, y’all don’t share the ball, you don’t do a lot of this — and this was in November, December before they went on that run.”

“Who are we going to trade,” he asked rhetorically, transporting himself back in his mind to that frustrating moment for Celtics fans everywhere. “Who are we going to let go? We’ve got to figure out something.”

“Now, to see them beating the Brooklyn Nets, going through (the) Milwaukee (Bucks), the NBA Champions from last year, and then finishing off Jimmy Butler (of the Miami Heat), I did not expect it,” he continued.

“That’s what professionals are. The old guys on that team showed what professionals are supposed to be like. That’s what your job is. You’ve got to find a way not to be an inconsistent team, to be a winning team.”

Jayson Tatum’s dad Justin has game too – and was recently spotted playing in an over-40 league

Check it out for yourself in this clip.

If basketball talent is at least partially a genetic heritage, you can see where Boston Celtics star wing Jayson Tatum gets some of his awe-inspiring abilities from by looking to his father, Justin Tatum.

Currently serving as the head coach of the Christian Brothers College High School (CBC) in Jayson Tatum’s hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, the eldest Tatum still gets on the court from time to time, and was recently spotted going off in an over-40 league someone had the presence of mind to catch a glimpse of on video. A product of nearby Saint Louis University, Justin once led the Bilikens to a conference championship and NCAA appearance, and looks like he still has a pretty deep bag today.

Check out the clip embedded below to see Jayson’s dad playing for yourself — while his son may not have gotten all his skills from his dad, the connection between them is clear.
