Indianapolis Colts waive Jacob Eason, activate former Texas QB Sam Ehlinger

The Colts ultimately chose to roll with rookie Sam Ehlinger over Jacob Eason.

When Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback Carson Wentz went down with a foot injury at the beginning of training camp, there was an intense battle for the backup role between Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger.

The two each had their up and down moments this offseason, but Ehlinger was eventually sidelined for several weeks due to a sprained knee suffered during the Colts’ final preseason game.

At that point, the decision was made for them and Eason was considered the No. 2 quarterback behind Wentz heading into the regular season.

The brief time that Eason had to come into the game in relief for Wentz on Sept. 19 against the Los Angeles Rams, coupled with Ehlinger’s impressive play prior to the knee injury, was enough for the Colts to part ways with Eason and activate Ehlinger from injured reserve on Tuesday.

In Eason’s relief appearance against the Rams, he attempted five passes. The second-year quarterback completed two of them for 25 yards and one interception.

Ehlinger now has the opportunity to pick up where he left off. His work ethic is hard to come by, and his relentless and competitive nature are what set him apart from others. If his number is called, you can bet he’ll be ready.

The Colts selected Ehlinger in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft.
