How Texas’ current, future running back room looks after Rueben Owens’ decommitment

After Rueben Owens’ decommitment, there are questions with Stan Drayton’s group. Here is the status of the current/future of UT’s RB room:

2024 season and beyond

Expected key RBs on roster: Jaydon Blue, Jonathon Brooks, 2022 RB TBD, 2023 RB TBD, 2024 RB TBD

This is where Rueben Owens’ decommitment could start to hurt the Longhorns. Jaydon Blue and Jonathon Brooks are the only “known” commodity to be on the roster to begin the 2024 season.

Depth is important at a position like running back. Texas has done an excellent job stacking elite after elite players — and that was with Tom Herman at the helm. Steve Sarkisian could eventually bring Alabama-type numbers to Austin. Some major recruiting battles are coming over the next three cycles.

Stan Drayton still has work ahead of him to figure out the future. Blue is the only blue-chip running back who is expected to be on the roster beginning in the 2024 season. As for Brooks, hopefully, Drayton’s development skills shown with Roschon Johnson apply to the current true freshman.
