Four-star Kennedale safety commits to Texas over LSU, Oregon

Four-star safety J.D. Coffey has announced his commitment to the University of Texas.

It’s a day worth celebrating around the Texas football community.

Along with four-star cornerback Ishmael Ibraheem, the Longhorns secured a commitment from four-star safety J.D. Coffey on Monday. Head coach Tom Herman landed two highly sought-after blue chip recruits on the same day that will significantly impact the 2021 recruiting class.

Coffey is the No. 7 rated safety in the class and a top 30 overall player in the state, according to 247Sports composite. The Kennedale, Texas native received offers from well-respected programs such as LSU, Oregon, Florida, Auburn, Michigan, Penn State and many others.

As a junior in 2019, Coffey earned District 6-4A-I Defensive MVP honors. He’s a versatile safety with an impressive frame and ballhawking ability who isn’t afraid to deliver the big hit.

Herman has dramatically improved the blue-chip ratio throughout his tenure at Texas. Within the 2021 recruiting class, seven commits are now at least four-star athletes. The Longhorns continue to run away with the top class in the Big 12.

What an impressive day.
