Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Marquise Goodwin will not be playing football this season.
He’s fully healthy and could contribute to the team immediately, but he’s instead chosen to put his family first. The decision is primarily a COVID-19 precaution in regards to his five-month-old daughter.

Each day that passes, more and more NFL players are choosing to opt out of playing football in order to take additional safety measures amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Family has always been of the utmost importance to Goodwin. Many remember the emotional 49ers victory in 2017, which was sparked by Goodwin’s emotional performance just hours after the stillborn death of his son. One year later, the Goodwin’s suffered another loss of twin boys in November of 2018.
Players who voluntarily opt out of the season will receive a $150,000 salary advance, but players with higher risks who opt out are eligible for a stipend of $350,000.
The Eagles acquired Goodwin from San Francisco during the 2020 NFL Draft to add some much-needed speed. It wasn’t a lock for him to make the Eagles’ roster this season, but he certainly could have provided much needed depth.
As of now, Goodwin is the only Eagles player to opt out of the 2020 season.
